Markieff Morris - F - Suns

According to Yahoo Sports, the Suns have worked on multi-team trades that would unload Markieff Morris.

The report mentions the Cavaliers as a facilitator in the deal, and it's no secret that they could use some insurance behind Kevin Love since he is the only big on their roster that can stretch the floor.

The Cavaliers are reportedly making calls on the market for Timofey Mozgov.

The big man has been a shadow of himself this season after a dominant performance in the NBA Finals last season, and there is some concern that he never fully healed after offseason knee surgery.

The Cavs started him on Friday vs. the Rockets because they needed his size against Dwight Howard, but he only played 18 minutes with two points, two boards and one block.

Hmm, the Cavs finally work Andy into the mix as a potential Mozgov/Morris multiple team trade discussed? A possibility I guess.

When Mozzy started and Andy played against Houston, my first thought was "they're showcasing them for possible trades."

Thanks for the info, TFIR. Guess we'll find out soon what's going to happen. I also have something to add to this trade talk. From Chris Haynes.

Cavs Focused On Trading For Backup To Iman Shumpert

The Cleveland Cavaliers are interested in acquiring a defensive-minded wing on the trade market.

The player could backup Iman Shumpert by playing strong defense and is also capable of shooting the three-pointer.

Shumpert has been a productive player for the Cavaliers but he has also been injury-prone.

I'm glad to see Griffin being aggressive (or apparently aggressive). We can pretty easily beat 27 teams in the league on most nights, but that's not going to win us a ring in June. We need as much talent as we can get, and we still have to think about Mozzy's ability to leave this summer, as well.

You make a great point and it makes me think...

OK, we got Mozgov last year to give us some rim protection. Fine, rim protection really helped us turn that (regular) season around. Along with Shump and JR of course.

But when you REALLY think about it, Mozgov this year would be completely useless against either San Antonio or GSW. (He only played last year vs GSW because we had no bodies)

As you said LeShaq, we can pretty easily beat 27 teams in the league or so without Mozgov. So now, if both San Antonio and GSW are going to play small, what's the point of a traditional big - especially one who is a FA after the season.

Oh, and now Andy is back this year, had a good amount of time to rehab, and can fill the role of big man (obviously not rim protector). A big, aggressive, good shooting, good passing big body.

This totally points to a trade. Bring in someone who can help us in the latter stages of the playoffs. The regular season is nothing but a fine tuning.

Moz has sucked this season, but he's shown flashes of his former self. When he's on, Moz is our defensive anchor. I don't like the idea of unloading our only rim protector (especially one we sent out two 1st rounders for.) I don't really have an alternative to suggest, but I think we're playing a dangerous game there.

Yes - Moz is really frustrating.

I still think that winning the GQ award (how, I'll never understand) will be the death of him.

Why would we trade Mozgov now when his value is at its absolute lowest? We're not going to get anything comparable in return. I'd rather stick it out and hope Timo improves.

And I really would prefer not to give up Varejao. The guy has been through some shitty years here in Cleveland and multiple injuries (which he can't control). But he hasn't moped or complained at all, and when he's healthy, I think he can be useful off the bench in limited minutes. Andy deserves to win a title with us.

Don't believe everything you read.

I don't necessarily like the idea of trading Mozgov (good chance we run into Whiteside in the ECF) -- and I emotionally hate the idea of trading Varejao. OTOH, these are two good expiring contracts that we might be able to get more contribution for.

Would the suns be willing to part with Tyson Chandler? They aren't going anywhere anytime soon, and probably don't want to pay a 33 yo C for the next 4 years -- that would get us back the rim protection of Mozgov.

Mozgov + Varejao + Cunningham for Chandler + Morris (Trade Exception) + PJ Tucker works for both sides. We get more talented players at key positions. The Suns get a lot of salary cap relief going forward, and unload some players who aren't going to do them any good by the time they are competitive. We might throw in a 2018 first rounder (but given that the trade market on Morris is so low, maybe not?)

That's a lot of new pieces to add to a championship team at this point -- I'm not a fan of that part. But that's a lot better talent, and it fits perfectly into all of the current gaps in our team (Tucker backs up Shumpert), Morris gives you another shooting big, Chandler gives you a rim protector. PJ Tucker and Chandler are consummate pros and well liked by everybody, Morris of course, is another story....

OK since we're discussing trade scenarios how about this...

I like the idea of being a facilitator in a Morris deal that sends him to a 3rd team. Would hate to deal Moz but the combination of his play plus impending free agency does make him a candidate to be moved. Griffin needs to be on the phone with his old friends in Phoenix. I wouldn't mind somehow parlaying Moz+the rights to Cedi for Tucker+Len. It would kill two birds...Tucker would provide a backup for Shump/Bron and Len would basically serve the Moz role with the added benefit of being on a rookie scale contract for an additional season.

Given that Phoenix is rebuilding - don't you think it's much more likely that they'd want to get rid of Chandler (33 on a huge contract) than Len (22 on a small contract?)

I hope people advocating trading two/three players and bringing three in realize how much adjustment that will take. I don't think it's possible, but let's say we trade Moz, Cunningham, and Andy to Phoenix for PJ Tucker, Morris, and Chandler. We have to work three new players into our eight man rotation and pray to God it works.

I'm fine making a trade, especially with the TPE. I'd be alright trading Moz or Andy assuming we get fair value. But trading two/three players and bringing in three more will absolutely hurt our playoff chances, no matter how good the talent we bring in is.
