Cavs 2015-2016 Team Salary and Trade Assets

No way of knowing this until the league announces the new cap after the season is closed. Specially with the new tv numbers.
What if we took last years salary cap and add the increase between 2 years ago and this year?

New cap projection for next year has the cap number at $92mil and the luxury tax at $111mil.

How does this affect the Cavs?

If you assume LeBron signs a 2 year max*, his salary will be $30.59 million. Add in salaries for KLove, Irving, TT, Shump, Frye, JR, Mo, Kaun and McRae**, and the Cavs are at $113.3mil, with Delly and Moz as free agents.

The number the Cavs would like to stay below is $115mil. This is known as the "apron". If the Cavs can stay below it for the entire season, they can execute a sign and trade and they can use the full MLE ($5.6mil) instead of the tax MLE ($3.4mil).

It seems very hard for the Cavs to stay under this $115mil number. It would likely take losing Delly and Moz as well as getting rid of someone like Frye or Shump.*** And even then, you still have 6 roster spots to fill on the cheap.

In relation to the Gasol rumors, it seems unlikely we can offer him the full 5.6mil MLE. More likely he'd have to settle for the 3.4mil.

*He can sign a 1 year max for $28.8 million and then get a full 5 year max next offseason.
**JR isn't guaranteed, but I assume we'll keep him. McRae is not guaranteed, but his salary is so low I expect we'll keep him as well. Everyone else is guaranteed.
***And by "get rid" I mean trade them to a team with cap space in which we'd likely have to attach a draft pick.

Great info, col63onel.

Is there another incentive to stay under the apron except for sign-and-trade eligibility and full MLE?

S&T's will probably be expensive this year because of all the free agent money out there. If the Cavs want to add a role player to the existing core in the off-season, I'd expect the team would try to get an existing contract from a team that's trying to make more cap space using one of the trade exceptions.

But the big story for the Cavs right now is the playoffs. If the Cavs disappoint in the post season, it's probably safe to expect that the Cavs will try to move one or more core players. If that happens, the salary picture could fluctuate a lot.

There is also the Bi-annual exception which is only available to teams under the apron.

If a team is under the tax level, it is easier to match salaries on trades.

Do we even have any draft picks this season? lol

No but they seem interested in buying one. Not a strong possibility of pulling it off, but I guess it is possible.

Can you use the TPE in a S&T (to get a player?) I know you can't sign a player directly with the TPE.

Here's the S&T rules: http://www.cbafaq.com/salarycap.htm#Q91

Looks like the main limitation would be "The Apron" and "the Taxpayer Mid-Level exception". If the Cavs are over the Apron or use the taxpayer MLE, they cannot do an S&T.
