Kudos to CM Punk for even stepping in there tonight.

For a 37-year old with zero formal training before he turned 35 and zero professional fights to get in there takes guts and balls. Proud of him for living out a dream.

That said, there was absolutely nothing about that performance that would lead me to believe the UFC would (or could frankly) want to promote another CM Punk fight.

I believe he has two more contracted fights. Depending on how this PPV does, he may get burn again down the road. Its a shame he didnt have any fights prior to UFC. You could tell the adrenaline got the best of him and he charged out their like a moron.

Mad respect to him though. We only have so many breathes in this life, why not go for it?

He didn't even look like an amateur for someone who had 2 years to train.

While he was shit, there have been so many fights that have ended much quicker between "real" MMA fighters. Punk charged in like a moron, and it bit him in the ass. He was the draw for many fans who wanted to see him get his ass kicked, and for many fans the UFC wanted to crossover. He drew people, probably more people than a lot of the bitter fighters ever would. Anyone who was on the card tonight got an added bonus because of CM Punk.

Eh, it's prize fighting. What he lacks in the fighting department he makes up for in the prize department.

And huge props to Miocic. I definitely did not favor him in this fight going in. It's so hard to win back to back fights at the very top of the heavyweight division and this fight proved why. Huge guys with no gloves = a lot of randomness. If he defends again (against Cain or Werdum I would think) I don't see how he doesn't instantly become one of the best heavyweights in UFC history.

Overeem looked sapped just entering the ring- wow had he lost size. He had been looking like a Mr Universe in the Octagon prior. I thought at first he was just trying to gage Stipe but then he never really countered. Props to Stipe for shaking off that shot and recovering, he earned it. Stipe/Werdum II will be fun as long as Werdum can avoid attacking any more trainers.

Yeah, Browne looked like shit. But Cain is the bigger draw, there's a good narrative of old vs new champ, and he looked better in his last fight vs a common opponent. I'd be very surprised if it wasn't him.

I personally think he's absolutely justified in his choice because the way the UFC has been treating him has just been incredibly disrespectful, not only to him but to the entire FW division. Conor makes tons of money, sure, but right now they are writing their own paychecks at the expense of the integrity of their own brand. The entire 145 division has pretty much grinded to a halt since Conor won because Dana is too busy making "super fights" off Conors trash talk, and it has resulted in one of the most interesting, talented and exciting divisions turning into a complete afterthought.

I don't blame him for feeling disrespected, but the UFC is a business first and a "treat everyone equally while maintaining brand integrity" sports organization second.

Guys that draw money like McGregor are always until the end of time going to get preferential treatment from management. In just his last three fights, Conor-led cards have generated roughly 4.5 million PPV buys. Do the math at 60 a pop, that's 270M in PPV revenue. Take out Conor's cut and the cut to the PPV distributors and UFC conservatively probably cleared 70M just in PPV revenue alone.

Aldo's last PPV as a headliner did under 200K buys. You do the math. That's only 12M in PPV revenue. Half back to the PPV providers, a little bit to the headliners UFC ends up making less than 5M for the show.

You factor it all in McGregor ends up being literally being five or six times as valuable to the company in terms of moneyed anyone else they have. That's why they let him do whatever he wants. As long as the golden goose keeps shitting out those golden eggs so to speak.

Jose Aldo was a tremendous fighter for a long time and I always enjoyed watching him, but through a combination of factors he was never a draw and was never was going to be one. His best (only?) chance at increasing his drawing power would have been to KO and embarrass McGregor and unfortunately for him the opposite happened.

I just Think they are mortgaging Their integrity by catering so much to conors wills and won'ts. Like, I get that Conor is making bank in the short term but they are losing the hardcore fan support they've so masterfully cultivated throughout the past 5-10 years, the guys who will actually watch your cards even if Conor isn't on them. This is part of what killed boxing; instead of maintaining and cultivating an entire healthy and competitive division, they put everything behind a few guys and the moment they either retire or leave for different reasons they are going to be in trouble.
