2017-2018 MVP Discussion

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
With Harden out and the Rockets losing a ton of games recently (even before Harden's injury) it's gotta be James in the lead, right?
You'd have to think so. I do think LeBron missed an opportunity for a "statement game" in Boston the other night, though.

Didn't Russ just win it as the 7th seed or something like that?

BTW, Houston is one game away from being in third themselves.

6th, yeah, but he was the first player since Oscar to average a triple double, and had the narrative.

Don't see anyway LeBron gets it if they finish third in the east.
There’s a decent chance Houston finishes 3rd in the West...

So let’s look at teams who currently have better records:

Curry has missed 13 games. Durant has missed 7. I fully expect both of them to be given more rest days down the stretch. They will take votes from each other. Don’t consider either of them serious candidates.

Harden has now missed 3 games but will likely miss closer to 7-10 by the time he comes back. They have been fading fast. This is LeBrons best competition so I’m hoping he’s out a little longer than expected.

Toronto has no shot and I’d be surprised if we don’t pass them

Kyrie is literally worse than he was last year but his team has the best record because they’re a bunch of try hard nerds. Still think we can easily pass Boston.

Kawhi missed way too much time

Amazingly LeBron has yet to miss a game.

So who do we got left? Westbrook who’s team is ball soup? But he JUST got it for his triple double meme. New year, gonna need a new meme if he wants to win another.

A week ago I would have enthusiastically said yes, especially after Harden went down.

But LeBron failed to capitalize on the opportunity and I think it's obvious what's going to do happen; we'll do our usual bullshit "not try for seeding" shtick with LeBron being mercurial and not giving a fuck about defense and he'll watch somebody else get it for the 4th year in a row...probably Harden which will really suck.

The difference this year in my opinion will be that IT is going to march to the beat of his own drum and play hard regardless of LeBron. Wade too. Cavs are a lot deeper this year and the bench can win some games against bad teams that in years past would have been losses.

Eh, Westbrook getting it with the squad he had is a little different than James on a team with the highest payroll in the league. If the Cavs finish 3rd, its underachieving.

And I'm gonna be honest, his defense is so atrocious he doesn't deserve it right now.

Giannis is right back in the mix and partly because he's dominant on both ends. Bucks will manage their way into the top 4 by seasons end.

But if Steph keeps rolling and Warriors finish 1 while the Cavs are 3rd, I think that's probably the MVP.

In the least shocking news of all time rich doesn’t think LeBron should win MVP

Warriors are 10-3 without Curry. They were periodically resting him before he hurt his ankle. Guy is probably going to end up playing less than 65 games this year. On a team that would have the 1 seed in the West without him. But anything to punish James!!!

Alright I just looked it up

In the history of the league only 5 players have won MVP with less than 70 games played. They are:

1956-57: Bob Cousy- 64 games of a total 72 games. Missed 8 games.

1957-58: Bill Russell- 69 games of a total 72 games so he missed 3 games.

1977-78: Bill Walton- 58 of a total of 82 games. Missed 24 games. This is pretty much your only reference point and I’m going to be honest. Looking at the voting I have no idea why Walton won. None. So I guess you always have 1977 and Bill Walton as hope.

1998-1999: Karl Malone- 49 of a total of 50 games in a strike shortened season

2011-12: LeBron James- 62 of a total of 66 games

Only ten players have ever won MVP playing 75 games or less in a season. Of those only 3 came in an 82 game season

Nash played 75
Iverson played 71
And Walton 58

Voters reward players who don’t miss significant chunks of the season. Curry has next to no shot to win you just look for any reason to not say LeBron

I suggest you go watch the tape of that Minnesota game and try this snark again.

He's DOGGING it on defense. An awful, awful defensive player right now. And the team is underachieving.

So pleeease explain to me how he deserves MVP. Go ahead. Make an argument.

How can it be that he's simultaneously playing every game, at an MVP level, and the Cavs are clearly a worse team than Boston?

Are we honestly going to make the argument that LeBron doesn't have the sufficient talent around him to be the 1 seed? Or hell, even the 2 seed, seeing as how Toronto is now multiple games up?

Warriors are 10-3 without Curry.

DO you know the Cavs are currently +3 points per 100 possession better than the opponent with LBJ off the court?

Do you know that number drops to +1.2 when he's on the court? The team is currently worse when LeBron is on the court.

But ok, MVP!!!

You are so nit picky relating to the Cavs to the single game as if that’s how anyone votes

Well, you know, James was really making a case for it, but don’t forget that Timberwolves game on January 8th when he dogged it!!!! No other player in the league ever dogs it they all give full effort at all times!!!

You look at every other player in the league with Rose colored glasses then look at any Cavalier with the finest microscope imagineable. It’s remarkable

Curry isn’t winning.

Nah, man, LeBron has been dogging it on defense for about 75% of the season. Last night was just his most open mail in job.

I mean if the alternates are Harden and Curry and we ONLY ever present their offensive acheivements but as soon as LeBron is brought up it goes straight to defense then it’s just double standards at that point and looking for a reason to not give it to LeBron
