Finally saw Get Out.

Maybe it was a movie that conveyed better in theaters (LaLa Land was awful at home), but I just didn’t feel the hype.

I saw it in theaters, and I didn't get the hype either. Supposed to contend for best picture Oscar, yet I find quite a few episodes of Black Mirror to be much better.

I often don't get the criteria for Best Picture, though. The winner often doesn't remotely match what I consider to be the best movies of the year. Often times the one I'd say is the best isn't even nominated. There certainly are some I do agree with.

No no; I think it was a really good movie. But, honestly, was not at the hype level

Shape of Water looks like a pretty big favorite.

The movie I really didn't get that won best picture was Birdman. I didn't like that one at all.

Get Out was okay, but nowhere near as good as I expected. And, again, episodes of Black Mirror are better.

I loved Birdman... Absolutely fucking LOVED that movie.. I recommend watching it again if you have only seen it once. It's such a good piece of filmmaking.

I think the Academy just appreciated the work, and that's why it won.

I could since I bought it instead of renting it, but I don't know if I can because it would cut into my VR time.

And I really messed up, I took down my 3D capable projector to put up my 4k Projector before I ever got around to watching Dredd 3D. Maybe I can watch it in my VR theater sometime.

The Ritual (Netflix)

6/10

Man, really liked the first half of this. Can't really say my critiques without spoiling shit though. For a low budget horror movie you can go watch on Netflix right now, it's pretty damn good I suppose. I'm a huge fan of The Descent which combined supernatural horror with a sort of "natural" horror due to the claustrophobic environment. This kind of felt like The Descent but in the woods. So that is kind of cool.

Has anyone ever watched the director's cut of Kingdom of Heaven? I remember watching the original in theaters and remember thinking there were so many missed opportunities. Turns out that the studio made Ridley Scott cut out about 50 mins of content to make it to the screen, which resulted in a mess of a film. The director's cut adds it all back and the difference is night and day, and some say it's the biggest difference from theater to director's cut ever.

It isn't a perfect film, Orlando Bloom is somewhat underwhelming as a lead and some of the dialogue and themes are a bit heavy handed. Still, the gorgeous cinematography, world building and amazing ensemble performances make this film an easy 9.0-9.5 /10 for me. Special shout out to Edward Norton as the Leper King, who manages to inject a ton of emotion and sympathy into his character even though we never see an inch of his skin.

Got my tickets for Saturday for Black Panther. So hyped.

Yikes. I got about 15 minutes into it, then bailed. Seem very self-aware/self-reverential to me. It was so obvious they thought they had something important to say, and I was supposed to sit-back in admiration of their creativity and insight.

Bleh.

Not... really sure how to approach this.. :chuckle: It's very similar in style, scope and narrative approach to something you would see on stage. Do you enjoy seeing a play? If not then this probably isn't the movie for you.

And as far as having something important to say; well, I thought the themes of the film were worthwhile and I thought the delivery of those themes was spot on.

Best part is that Keaton then went on to play the Vulture. :chuckle:

I really like it.

Gorgeous film. I felt that Ed Norton deserved a supporting actor nod.
