Baker Mayfield: Fire The Cannons

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Wasn't me, but that isn't his strength yet either. First off, during the course of his college season I became a bigger fan of his arm talent and accuracy. He also seemed to get much smarter within the offense. There's so much to like coming away from this game. There's areas to grow as well.

He has very good pocket presence, and my biggest beef during the college season with drafting Mayfield was his tendency to push toward the sidelines if a throw wasn't there. From there he wants to run for the first down. He is still doing it, and he is doing it against a second team defense. The Callaway throw to the sideline was my favorite play from Baker because he needs to look for that more often.

When he plays a first team defense, it won't be as easy, especially if they know that is Mayfield's tendency. So while his pocket presence was better than I expected, it still needs work.

Oh I agree.

The throw off the back foot was really bad. They need to work on plant and drive on some of those throws.. it’s great he has time to develop his habits

Definitely. He got away with that all the time in College but that won't fly in the NFL. He'll figure it out.

Absolutely, more than half his throws are pure arm throws.

His natural talent and accuracy allows him to do that, but when he plants and throws, its special. That slant to Callaway was as on the money as you can get, perfect timing and in stride to lead him to space.

Guy is really good when he plants and throws. Super special. If they can get him to throw like that all the time, they have a real player.

His pocket awareness is uncanny, too. He saved drives with his ability to recognize pressure and bail on the pocket.

Love the fire and attitude this guy plays with... To go along with his work ethic and leadership qualities that you can't teach, I'm excited as hell to watch Bake grow/develop into eventually a top level starting QB and lead this team to places they haven't been in a while.

Otto Who? May as well be telling me civil war stories.

Total lack of respect for Browns heritage and by the way others since Otto as well

Yeah, cool story, but hardly anyone who knows how to turn on a computer remembers how Otto Graham played. I suggest you guys research his contribution to Cleveland. He was a bad ass.

People are catching on.

Feels good. Can’t wait for next week. Looking forward to more improvement. Get that comp% up.

Who’s the guy who said Mayfield never went through reads??
The comp% wasn’t even a concern, though. That would purely be a concern if someone only looked at the box score.

His receivers had 3 bad drops, he had 3 intentional throw-aways under pressure, 2 more were tightly contested plays that were well defended, and he had one errant back-shoulder throw that sailed out of bounds.

Those were the 9 incompletions.

Yeah, if Callaway catches the smoke screen Baker threw, hes already at 60%.

Not too worried about the incomplete passes.

Otto Graham says hi, from the dead, covered in armed forces medals and MVPs. I am impressed with Baker's start and leadership potential, but he has a lot to accomplish before we forget Otto Graham.

Otto was pre-Super Bowl, so if we get there, it'll be getting somewhere we've never been.

To quote the moving picture classic The Replacements, Baker looked like a duck on a pond last night.

“Like a duck on the pond. On the suface everything looks calm, but beneath the water those little feet are churning a mile a minute.”

Pretty much exactly how I felt about Baker watching him last night. He looked remarkably poised and in control... from the waist up. But those feet are perpetually in motion. His footwork is choppy, borderline wild and causes most of his “all arm” passes.

The good news is that Baker, unlike a lot of QBs, has enough arm talent (strength + accuracy) to still be very effective even when his footwork isn’t ideal.
