2019 NBA Draft

Do Not Sell My Personal Information

I will say...if Doumbouya does only play a limited role at the Pro-A level next year as the writer suggests, that should give teams in the mid-high lottery pause. It's not a significantly higher level of competition than major conference NCAA ball, so he should be held to the same standard as a top NCAA prospect and expected to be one of the best players on his team and at least a top-20 or so player in the league. I think he has that potential, but he still has to prove himself.

The Stepien updated their 2019 rankings: https://www.thestepien.com/2019-draft-rankings/

Top tier of Barrett, Little, Reddish, and Williamson

Second tier of Bol, Doumbouya, Grimes, Hunter, and Porter

I think they're pretty on-target as always...what would you all change?

They put pretty minimal effort into their rankings. For how much time and energy they put into the draft their ranking page is super disappointing. Only one or two guys actually kept up-to-date rankings leading up to the draft. Most of them have tiers with 10+ players in each tier that they update once per month. Pretty much everything I've heard from them this early is that most are very low on Bol, so I don't even think these rankings reflect their actual opinion on players. It makes no sense lol... I'd think that would be a focal point of their site but what do I know lol.

I guess I agree...on one hand I think it's a waste of time to meticulously rank dozens of prospects when you know you're going to have to rearrange everything once the college season starts. But on the other hand...even after the college season was over they didn't seem to become noticeably more invested in their rankings. Nonetheless, I do tend to agree more with their rankings than with the average internet pundit's rankings.

Yeah I really like what they do, just don't think they use their rankings well to reflect their opinion. Zwicker I think runs the site and he had like more than half of the top 10 within the same tier and having the same ranking a week before the draft. I haven't been too locked in yet, but I'm pretty confident they're all lower on Bol Bol, so I'm not entirely sure where they're pulling those ranks from.

It's super early though for rankings anyway. Though a guy I think will be moving up boards based on what I saw in the World Cup qualifiers is Rui Hachimura. There's always an instant overreaction to the most recent draft and having it affect your evaluation. People will see a lot of Kevin Knox in Hachimura from a physical standpoint. If Knox looks good I actually think it will affect Hachimura's stock some.

But I recommend checking out his recent highlights if you've not seen them. I haven't kept up with this thread, so it may have been mentioned, but he looked ridiculous in Japan's game vs Australia about a month ago.

Can he shoot yet? That seems to be the main thing that separates him from a guy like Knox. With no outside shooting ability and even less playmaking ability, he seems too unskilled to make it in the NBA.

Mechanics aren't bad, shot well from the FT line last year too. Much more fluid getting to his pull up than Knox I'd say as well. The 3P% obviously has lagged behind tremendously though. I do think he can knock down shots out of the mid-range right now. The handle/fluidity at his size gives him some intriguing creation upside. A guy to watch.

I'll believe in him when I see him take the leap this year. Normally I think upperclassmen should be legit top-10 players in the country at the college level to merit lottery consideration. Is that within reach? Otherwise I see him as a late first early second type who you draft and hope is a late bloomer type like Cedi.

Every player is on a different development curve. Gonzaga has developed players as well as anyone. I didn't follow him close enough in the past to get a feel for how much he's improved.

And no he won't be seen as a top-10 guy just due to the way the college game is played and with how loaded Gonzaga is this year.

It's all about consistency with him. I think his tools will pretty much lock him in as a top-20 guy, even if he makes no shooting improvement. Some of the flashes you see of shot creation are as good as anyone in the class.

Gonzaga will be a team to watch for sure...it'll be interesting to see what leader (or leaders?) emerges from the trio of Hachimura/Tillie/Norvell.
