I think Tate Martell is just covering his bases. I saw a tweet he is on track to graduate in May. I always thought the Burrow vs Haskins fight for the starting job leaned towards Haskins before it even began because he was thought to be a longer term answer since he had 3 years of eligibility left at the time. Both Tate and Fields have 3 years of eligibility left but Tate can go to the NFL after the 2019 season and Fields won't be eligible till after the 2020 season.

I think Tate putting his name in the transfer portal might swing the race in Tate's favor if him and Fields are neck and neck. They know Tate can transfer if he doesn't win but Fields probably won't get another waiver so he will have to sit out a year if he decides to transfer again. Maybe Fields just waits it out if he doesn't win the job and tries to graduate in May 2020.

Letting Tate take the first shot at the starting job might be the safer bet in terms of depth. It will be a interest spring and possibly summer if Tate and Fields are neck and neck or one of them doesn't jump out to a early lead.

Not to be a dick, but none of this is going to happen. Fields is a generational prospect who will most definitely start, and Tate is transferring. Likely well before any spring camp battles. And Tate isn't going pro after this season, regardless of where he's at.

. Fields is a generational prospect who will most definitely start,

Not targeting you, but I've gotta ask... if Fields is so good... a generational prospect who will most definitely start... why didn't he start in Georgia? If he is a generational prospect, why didn't Georgia develop him? What does that make Fromm who beat him out?

Yeah, they’re not going to do this.

It’s not much of a competition, either. Tate sees the writing on the wall.

Putting himself in the transfer portal allows him to develop relationships with and flirt with other schools when he eventually moves on after the spring semester.

How is it possible that Tathan is on track to graduate in May already?

From took them to the National Title game as a freshman.

He enrolled in January of 2017 and has taken summer classes between each of his regular academic years.

2016-17 spring semester
Summer term
2017-18 fall semester
2017-18 spring semester
Summer term
2018-19 fall semester
2018-19 spring semester

I don't follow Georgia that closely, so this is just an obvious guess, but it's hard to bench Fromm after he had Georgia on the brink of a national title as a true freshman. And then this year had 30 TDs/6 INT while completing 67% of his passes. Fields has the higher upside, and SHOULD end up being the better player, but it's hard to bench Fromm when he's putting up those kind of numbers and winning games.

Kirby Smart showed loyalty to the guy, right or wrong, similar to the loyalty that Urban showed JT Barrett over Dwayne Haskins at the end of last year... even though Haskins flashed big time potential in the Michigan game when he came in, and clearly had superior arm talent.

Why did JT start over Haskins in 2017?

Looks like @TheLand1287 beat me to it.

Sometimes, it really is that simple.

Im not sure if he was one of those guys who came to school in January but if he was and he stays the summers then it doesn't seem as crazy. I knew a hand full of athletes when I was in college and they also would take independent studies with their tutors.

I'm not saying it will happen but I think Tate is covering his bases and trying to level the playing field. I also don't think it's a sure thing that Fields wins the starting job but he definitely has the edge with how good of a prospect he is. I don't think generational talent is something that really works for QBs. Here is a list of 5 star QBs from 2005-2014 ie guys that should be in the NFL. The two guys that we think of generational talent in terms of QBs during that time (Cam and Luck) weren't 5 star QBs.

  • Matt Barkley, USC
  • Ryan Mallett, Arkansas
  • EJ Manuel, FSU
  • Braxton Miller, Ohio State
  • Aaron Murray, Georgia
  • Mark Sanchez, USC
  • Matt Stafford, Georgia
  • Tim Tebow, Florida
  • Jameis Winston, FSU
  • Jimmy Clausen, Notre Dame
  • Terrell Pryor, Ohio State
  • Tyrod Taylor, Va Tech
  • Jeff Driskel, Florida
  • John Brantley, Florida
  • Russell Shepard, LSU
  • Garrett Gilbert, Texas
  • Dayne Crist, Notre Dame
  • Ryan Perrilloux, LSU
  • Mitch Mustain, Arkansas
  • Kyle Allen, Texas A&M
  • Max Browne, USC
  • Christian Hackenberg, Penn State
  • Gunner Kiel, Notre Dame

Let me start this by saying, I don't care who ends up winning the starting job, I just want the best QB. Those who are saying it's basically Fields job now and we will be better off in the long run with him, just should think about the history of QBs at Ohio State since Troy Smith and their star rating.

Justin Zwick 5 stars
Troy Smith 4 star
Todd Boeckman (I can't even find a star rating for him)
Joe Bauserman (same as above)
Terrelle Pryor 5 star
Braxton Miller 5 star
Kenny Guiton 3 star
JT Barrett 4 star
Cardale Jones 3 star
Joe Burrow 4 star
Dwayne Haskins 4 star

None of the 5 stars took us to the playoffs or a national championship. Troy, Boeckman, and Cardale took us to a national Championship. We won it with a 3 star QB with Cardale.

They hand picked Fields, nothing else matters.
