Baker Mayfield: Fire The Cannons

Early era disrespect... I don’t like it.
Would love to see Tom Brady take a 1940s hit. Might change his willingness to stand in the pocket.

The defensive tackles/ends of today are so much bigger and stronger than the 1940’s that I don’t buy this for a second. No amount of rule changes would make me rather get tackled by Haloti Ngata than a 240 pound defensive tackle

I get respect for what the league once was, but the level of player in the NFL today are so laughably better than what there was in the 1940s.

Let me put it this way, if Emmanuel Ogbah was in the 1940s he would wreak havoc and be one of the best defensive players in the league

Let me put it this way: bigger and stronger? Sure. Dirtier? Not a chance.
Also, remind me of what special protections QBs had in the 40s? 50s? 60s?

Also, the point about Ogbah cuts both ways. Imagine if those guys in the 40s had access to the training Ogbah's had his whole life?

But this adds to my point. Those guys in the 40’s didn’t have that. Which is why they were significantly weaker and slower. But you said if Brady was taking those hits. Well those hits would be coming from guys that may have been working another job and didn’t have that training.

The rules have definitely changed to protect the QBs but I’d probably rather get slammed by a 240 pound DT than hit legally by a free release Myles Garrett

Squirt Shoppe was how I accidentally read that.

@Deezus

As for the ongoing asinine Tom Brady debate...

We’re talking about dirty “1940’s hits” from a 240lb cornfed offseason gas station attendant with 15% body fat and 5.0 40s as opposed to 2019 hits from 7% body fat full time trained 270lb dudes running 4.7s.

While the lax rules may have been a factor in a theoretical “Tom Brady time in the pocket” situation, the rules are different partially because these guys can do so much more damage per play with their freakish abilities.

I don’t think I’d be too concerned about Tom in a time machine.

The defensive tackles and ends in the 40's were running like 5.5 40's, 5.0 would have been blazing fast back then.

Very few players had modern size or speed, Jim Brown was one of them in the 50's and 60;s and dominated because of it.

But I agree, just think your point doesn't go far enough.

With his leather helmet and his offensive lineman playing 2 different positions?

I think the peak of violence in the NFL was the 70s and 80s. Steroids became regularly used thanks to the Steelers, cocaine was used like Tylenol, concussions were a badge of honor, players became cult heroes for slamming QBs on their gourds and if you didn't tackle leading with your head you would end up on the bench. I think Brady is an uber competitor- if he played back then, instead of TB12 he would have loaded up @ the buffet, added a solid layer of fat to go with the juice, swallowed a bag of amphetamines before each game and done well. He never would have lost to a Dan Marino or Jim Plunkett, that's for dam sure.

Again, the best way to gauge GOATness is to compare to ones on generation- and 10 Super Bowls in the modern era, even when 1 of the 30 teams was the Browns, is incredible. Football fans have been blessed to get to watch him operate.
