2019 NBA Draft Lottery

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Yep go look at video of him. He is fluid and has moves. He was a PG in high school and AAU.

Lol ok, he has alright handles, but he is no Kyrie Irving. So saying his handles are good is misleading, I've never seen him beat anybody off the dribble.

Still a sleeper for 5th probably despite a poor college season. The skillset does match the type of player Beilein would like.
But in reality the only excuse justifiable for his lack of motor or better put his passiveness are his core muscle issue and
whether or not the Cavs think that's all that it was and if it won't be an issue in the future.

I'm not sure the core muscle issue was the source of his problems. I did read a couple articles about him yesterday and I think the work ethic is there. Apparently he would wake up early in high school and work on his game at the gym before school. They say he was also a hard worker at Duke and always in the gym.

They say he is a very good teammate and very coachable. He committed to Duke with Tre Jones and they thought they were going to be the guys at Duke. Barrett, Zion, and Joey Baker gave Duke five 5 star recruits in the class and they committed after Reddish and Jones. His high school coach thinks that the issue with Reddish at Duke was he was too good of a teammate and was willing to take a back seat for the good of the team.

You're hyping me on Reddish!

He has good handles for a wing. They are better than Culver or Hunter's. If Kyrie is your bench mark for good handles then there might be 5 players who have good handles in the NBA.

I haven't seen much of Culver other than his YouTube videos, but No dude, Culver's handles are better than Reddish's. Simply because Culver created off the dribble and Reddish was a spot up 3pt shooter.

Go watch more on Culver. His ball handling skills are probably on par with Cedi's. Someone who probably fits more as a 3rd ball handler than a 2nd or primary. He has to hunch over and use his body to keep defenders away from the ball instead of facing up the the basket.

Ehh, I think the jury came back a year and a half ago and said he was worth the #1 pick.

Bol is just not the same physical specimen that Embiid was, not the same prospect. A totally different type of 7 footer and with an extremely concerning body type.

Guy "Embeed" does not a have a great work ethic. If you are an absolutely elite talent with millions in the bank how do you let yourself get out of shape? Hire a personal trainer for gods sake!

without the injury he would be a lock for #2

I cannot envision a reality where he would be a lock for #2. He lacks lateral quickness and likely will never be able to put on much bulk. That is going to make him unplayable defensively against some teams, and you just can't take situationally unplayable guys at No. 2 overall.

Part of the problem with Embiid is that his lower-body issues make it more difficult for him to put in the kind of extensive cardio-work he should to get in better shape. Not saying he can't, just that it pretty much has to be non-basketball work to reduce impact as much as possible.

That being said...hire a personal chef, at least.

I am a proponent of Bol Bol but his weight does bother me, especially if he is really down nearly 30 pounds from college. I suspect the college weight was a fabrication but he needs to get stronger and heavier to not get beat up down low.

I agree. I’d bet he never really weighed 230.

I know Bol has some crazy length and enticing analytics, but to weigh just 208 lbs at 7’2” is downright scary! As someone who remembers his dad, Manute, I’d be surprised if Bol Bol is every to play more than about 10 minutes per game. Anything beyond that and he’s likely to sustain an injury.

I’m a fan of Cam Reddish and think he’s getting a bad rap. Playing with so many dynamic, ball-dominant players, like Zion, RJ, & Tre Jones didn’t leave alot of touches for Cam. A number of former 5-star recruits have almost become after-thoughts in the Duke program.

If Reddish had returned to school, he’s likely a certain top 3 pick next year.

I won't post Sam Vecenie's full mock draft on The Athletic, but here's #5 with the Cavaliers taking Culver.

5. Cleveland Cavaliers — Jarrett Culver

6-6 wing, sophomore, Texas Tech

(Full scouting report)

The Lakers going with Garland would put the Cavaliers in a good scenario, as it would open up things a bit for them and leave a number of potential options on the board. My read currently is that Culver, Cam Reddish, and Hunter seem to be the top options for Cleveland. This is the first spot where Reddish gets serious consideration unless the Knicks move down a couple of spots. There are mixed thoughts league-wide as to if the Cavaliers would take Reddish over Hunter, despite the general consensus of the league being a bit higher on Hunter.

Culver makes the most sense to me, though. He’s a tremendous fit next to Collin Sexton due to his ability to be a secondary ball-handler, scorer, and multi-positional defender with size. His athleticism gives some executives around the league concern that his upside could be somewhat limited, but I’m not betting against a kid that works as consistently hard as Culver. He’s regarded by trainers and the Texas Tech coaching staff as the kind of player that you need to literally lock out of the gym to keep him from over-working himself. Personally, I’d be surprised if Culver doesn’t at least become a solid starting-quality player in the league. As the Cavs look to continue to rebuild their roster and culture, having two intelligent, hard workers like Sexton and Culver as the two centerpieces would be appealing.

He also links to his full scouting report of Culver from January 2019. If you have a subscription, it's worth a read.

Items like work ethic and future growth are difficult to assess for fans as it often requires vetting of the prospects on an individual basis

With a teacher like Beilein and the work ethic like Sexton and--allegedly--Culver have, you really would have an interesting situation brewing.

Serious question, because I don't follow college basketball closely.

Who are some former 5 star recruits who became afterthoughts at Duke, but real stars in the NBA?

Good question. Maybe ‘after-thought’ wasn’t the best word to use. Here’s a list of players that went to Duke and are in the NBA:

Many of them did not have starring roles at Duke, but have gone on to have successful careers in the NBA.
