Draftkings/Fanduel Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
So I accidentally entered the Millionaire Maker 3 times with the same lineup. I won $10 with each of them, though, so I was lucky.

I doubled up my $3 GPP and easily was in the top 50% in the $25 massive double up.

+$58 for the weekend.

Actually the person did know that, they talk about it in the article.

Yeah, this thing is going to be shut down soon. That's insider trading. The next step is for the two companies to artificially create poor values or misleading articles from their paid spokesmen... who also happen to write fantasy articles for ESPN.

This system pretends you are playing against normal shmoes but you are playing against algorhythms. If the algorithm creators are also dipping their beaks, it's the house sitting down and playing poker next to you in a Hawaiian shirt, pretending to be drunk.

It's amazing how quickly ESPN (seriously, Countdown is just like your local access Sunday morning betting guide shows now) and CBS (Or is it the NFL? Either way I see a shit load of ads on TNF) jumped into bed with what is essentially gambling masquerading as fantasy football. I know everyone is looking for new revenue streams nowadays, but those things looked sketchy from the start.

Na, I strongly doubt it's gonna get shut down. These DFS sites are an unbelievable boom, not just to the DFS companies, but to the NBA, NFL, MLB, and all their media partners. The data they've shown about how drastically it increases their live viewership is astounding. In fact, I wouldn't be shocked if it's projected growth played a large part in the NBA's insanely lucrative new TV deal.

Sports betting has always been pretty easy to sweep under the rug due to it's ties to even more chance-related forms of gambling like slots and all that stuff. The NBA has been in favor of legalizing it, but the other leagues and the NCAA have not.

But DFS is now a HUGE part of what all the major league and media companies are doing. People keep laughing at ESPN shilling for DraftKings, but it goes beyond just taking the cash from DraftKings... It draws in thousands, maybe millions more eyeballs for MNF, the NBA, and their other properties which means more advertising $$, etc. The combined forces of the NBA, NFL, MLB and other leagues are a fairly strong lobbying force, and you can bet they will join in the fight to keep them afloat.

There was a really interesting article on (I think) SI today showing what the actual legal landscape of the debate is. If you look at who the loudest lawmakers are that making a fuss about regulating it are, you'll see a lot of them aren't concerned about stopping DFS but rather about legalizing sports betting as well. The article (which was written by a lawyer) made the point that DFS is actually much closer to playing the stock market, which can be researched and is based on a collection of variables and measures of human performance, than it is to straight gambling, which often relies on a single result. But then again, you can probably make the same argument for sports betting and for things like poker. Games that probably deserve to be edged more towards a game of skill than a game of chance. And of course, the stock market is highly regulated as well. So too, should DFS be.

That said, the insider info stuff is a HUUUUGE problem, and it's definitely gonna get the DFS in a world of hurt. They'll get regulations put in place, which will restrict their customer base. They'll lose players due to the bad PR and casual players realizing what they're actually up against. And inevitably they're gonna lose market share to the now almost-certain legalization (or semi-legalization) of sports betting.

So DFS won't go away. But their dumb moves over the last few months is gonna grind the Scrooge McDuck-type money they've been hauling in way down.

Both sites have banned their employees from participating in DFS games. That should more or less solve the problem, provided they follow up and fire any employees who break the rules.

Definitely not insider trading, sure you know ownership percentage, doesnt mean dick unless you know how players perform. Until they figure out to measure exactly what a player will give you, I'd barely call it an edge.

The way a sports book works is that they grab a buck or two off the transaction. They set a fair bar on an over/under, let the betters enjoy a 50/50 shot at winning, and skim off volume. On occasion, if I'm kicking it in Vegas with friends, I'll play a few game lines. It's because I know the casino makes money off volume, not some crooked algorithm.

If we hear more stories about employees of these sites making personal gain as players, not just off volume, the government will intercede because they have made a much more fair form of sports gambling illegal outside of very select situations. And at this point, I have no doubt taking a vegas line on a game is more regulated than these guys.

Tentatively set one line-up for this week:

QB - Matt Ryan
RB - Le'Veon Bell
RB - Todd Gurley
WR - Julian Edelman
WR - James Jones
WR - Jeremy Maclin
TE - Gary Barnidge (may swap him with Delanie Walker)
FLEX - Allen Hurns
D/ST - Bills

Gurley is a really good value right now at only $4,300.

What is the salary cap on DraftKings? Because I think Gurley is around $6,700 on FanDuel. That's crazy cheap unless it's a 40K cap compared to 60K for FD.

I'm well aware of how the gambling industry makes their money. Everything theses DFS sites have done is UIGEA compliant which is what ended up killing online poker. The rake in DFS is ridiculous I'll say that.

However, to call what happened Insider Trading is just wrong, Insider Trading implies you know exactly what is going to happen, that's not the case in this aspect. Does knowing ownership percentages help build better contrarian lineups? Sure. What it doesn't do is guarantee that the players in those lineups perform. Are these employees in the wrong for sharing this info? Probably, but to me this whole thing is people bitching about DFS just to bitch.

I don't think it's quite akin to insider trading, but if it were to continue, it could absolutely lead to the government intervening and getting these DFS sites shut down. That's why you've seen Draft Kings so quick to ban their employees from participating in DFS games. They don't want to ruin the good thing they've got going.

The government has no business in DFS, just like they had no business in poker. That's another conversation though.

For anyone who wants some more stats to look at, I wrote a program that gives a sort of ppg to consistency ratio. I'm still working on it, but here's the ratings I came up with for the first 4 weeks of the season.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B3V7gLvN7wACeHgtSEV3c01DMTQ/view?usp=sharing

I used it to come up with this lineup for a 50/50:

QB Blake Bortles
RB Jamaal Charles
RB Dion Lewis
WR Pierre Garcon
WR Willie Snead
WR Demaryius Thomas
TE Rob Gronkowski
FLEX Charles Clay
DST Bills

It doesn't work for defense yet because the site I'm getting the stats from stupidly splits up DEF and ST

Starting Freeman last night in DraftKings was definitely a good move. 38.6 points. Off to a great start.

My line-ups for this week (subject to change, of course) are:

QB - Andy Dalton
RB - Devonta Freeman
RB - Arian Foster
WR - DeAndre Hopkins
WR - Allen Hurns
WR - James Jones
TE - Gary Barnidge
FLEX - Andre Johnson (might have to swap him out...not terribly confident)
D/ST - Patriots

QB - Blake Bortles
RB - Devonta Freeman
RB - Dion Lewis
WR - John Brown
WR - Allen Hurns
WR - James Jones
TE - Gary Barnidge
FLEX - LeVeon Bell
D/ST - Jets

Probably gonna do one or two more before Sunday.
