2016-2017 Around The NBA

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Why do we care who the Celtics acquire? I mean seriously? They are an overrated team. They are a team full of role players who will have to be shipped out for any all star and two average all stars (IT, Horford) who won't move the needle vs us in the playoffs. I don't give a shit if they get Hayward, PG13, or Butler. They aren't beating us.
Hey, I've been beating a dead horse all season about the Celtics being trash. However, if they acquire two of those players while keeping some semblance of depth then they will be a formidable foe now and in the future.

Simply put, I just view them as our biggest threat in the future of the East and have thought so for years now. Their current team is pretty much irrelevant to that. It's the assets they have to get better if they choose to do so.

That's the thing though, there's no path for them to acquire two of those players without losing their depth. It's not realistic. Also they are likely to lose Bradley this year and will be forced to make a decision on IT. If they re-sign IT then they cannot pay IT, Horford, and any two of Hayward, PG13, Butler. That doesn't even include Crowder, Bradley, and Smart who can all leave this summer. They can only get one of those three All Stars. They will be capped out if they re-sign IT.

Basically they need two of the three to even have a chance at beating us and that requires them to gut their team and make IT their highest paid player. They would be the new Raptors if they do that.

Lmfao @ DeRozan getting in over Paul. I also kind of chuckle at DeAndre Jordan over KAT.

It all depends how much they're willing to spend. But they can sign Hayward, trade for George or Butler, and still keep some of their bench. And then max IT. They are able to do all of that, if the owner is willing to pay for it.

How do you figure? They've got plenty of capital for a trade without even touching their roster. They have the first overall pick in this draft, plus pathetic Brooklyn's first round pick in 2018, which is likely to be a high lottery pick as well. Those two picks together would be more than enough to trade for either PG or Butler. The Bulls badly need a rebuild, and they'd jump all over that deal. And the Celtics can sign Hayward as a free agent.

Adding Butler/PG and Hayward to their current roster makes that a very dangerous team.

They cannot re-sign IT, keep Horford, and sign two of PG, Butler, or Hayward. They simply won't have enough cap room. Add in the #1 overall pick (Fultz) which would be the second highest salary on their roster currently ($12M) and they are capped out before that. Plus they cannot acquire two of those guys and then keep Bradley and Crowder. The salary cap will prevent them from having four $20M per year players and any depth. Check their roster out. Horford is at $26M and IT will come in at no less than that. Unless they think PG, Butler, or Hayward are going to take a pay cut they aren't getting more than one of them which is why I'm not concerned at all about Boston going forward.

The team that I think will challenge The Cavs the most in the next few years is..........Philly. If they stay healthy they are an All Star away from the playoffs and have better picks than Boston going forward. They can sign Lowery, Milsap, and other pieces and have a healthy Simmons, Embiid, Saric. They also have the Lakers 1st round pick next year. Philly can get good fast just like OKC did with KD, Russ, Harden, Ibaka.

Yes, they can. Do you not understand the CBA? In particular, Bird Rights and the ability to retain your own players even when over the cap?

How do you think the Cavs have kept this team together? They could have even kept Mozgov & Delly if they were willing to pay the price.

This is why I've been a big proponent of them just sitting tight with their assets. If they were to trade for Butler or George, and then sign Hayward, it'd be a much tougher Eastern Conference.

Here's hoping that Hayward stays put, and Butler/George head West.

I agree: there is no reason the Celts can't salary dump on trades that the main assets are picks. For example this seems like a good move by both teams: trade the #1, bradley, and a guy like Johnson for George. Dump salary and then go after Hayward. They have assets to keep Horford, add George, add Hayward, keep IT, keep Jaylen Brown. That's nasty lineup which is easily a title contender with the Cavs and Warriors

Has there been ONE indication that Hayward wants to play for the Celtics? For weeks now I've seen the Celtics signing Hayward like it's some preordained union.

Where did all this bullshit start?

Right. I think this is far more likely than them trading for both George and Butler, which I'm not convinced they have the assets for. But they can certainly sign Hayward, trade for one, and have everyone's bird rights and be able retain as many of their players as they so choose.

Come on everyone knows the best American born white wing player has to play for either Utah or the Celts :chuckle:

Correct they don't have the assets to trade for both which means they need to sign the one who is eligible to be signed which would be Hayward. Now let's say they do sign Hayward. It will be for $4/126. The same deal as Horford. So now they're paying Horford and Hayward a combined $52M. Let's say they pull the trigger and do trade for PG and he signs and extension with them. It will cost them either the #1 overall this year (Fultz) plus Jaylen Brown. The reason it will cost them Brown is because if they sign Hayward and trade for PG they aren't going to keep Jaylen Brown on the bench. He's too good and IND will require him in a trade. Even if BOS keeps this years #1 (Fultz) and instead trades the 2018 BKN 1st plus Jaylen Brown for PG they are then adding PG at $4/126 and Fultz at $12M to Horford and Hayward. So then so far that would be

Horford
Hayward
PG
Fultz

for a whopping $92M. This is before they have to re-sign IT which they can go over the cap to do but will cost them another $30M. That's $122M. Then they have Bradley who will for sure get a deal in the $14-$18 per year range like Crabbe, Turner, or even more. That's at minimum $146M so far. Add in Crowder and Smart and that will put them over $150M!!!!! that's if they don't trade away Crowder and Smart but even if they did trade them there still at $140M with no depth and no draft picks. They aren't going to do that. I get that the cap is going up but teams simply can't pay four players more than $20M and maintain useful depth.
