2016-2017 Indians Off-Season Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Whether the fans are optimistic or optimistic had zero bearing on whether Brantley comes back. What I do know is this surgery was to repair an injury he got while trying to rehab- which begs the question of whether the prior shoulder issues have really been solved. We saw already how a repaired shoulder can be good enough for a guy to function in spurts but be unable to sustain the day to day workload of swinging a bat (Travis Hafner). After 3 setbacks, a follow up surgery and a full year lost, I see no logical reason to make any real conclusions with Brantley other than taking it step by step and seeing what happens. I just hope this GM doesn't get caught flat footed with no options. I just don't see an OF of Naquin, Almonte and Chisenhall being the answer.

We've been over this a few times.

It was reported when they went in to do the surgery on the biceps that they also checked on the shoulder and said it looked great.

Then about a month ago or so we heard that the shoulder was almost 100%, but his biceps was still lagging behind a bit.

That's literally all we have to go off of.

People are just running with the hearsay we heard a few weeks ago that he was "never going to play again", which has been shot down numerous times, and are sticking with that as fact.

Also, I think you are confusing me saying "he will be full go" with me saying "he will be fully healthy"...those are 2 different things, and we won't find out if he is truly healthy until he is full go.

The best thing to do would obviously be listening to medical professionals and not baseless speculation based on no evidence.

Close second though.
What are the medical professionals saying today and what did they say this same time last year. Im not speculating anything, just saying, until he is in the lineup, just assume he won't be ready. Not hard to understand and pretty good logic. Have a safety net ready for the possibility that he is indeed finished.

You can't argue with some guys here. And even when they are wrong, they're still right. The psychological mind weaving dance the ego does is simply amazing.

A healthy Brantley puts us way over the top, however. It'd be a shame to see him go out so soon.

Sad part is I think I am the only one who actually is agreeing with you.

He is progressing well and will be ready for sometime in spring training. Now none of us know how he will be and likely will be on the rusty side, but he does work hard and is very good at adjustments. I don't expect a ton of power or playing all the time.

I agree we do need a backup plan either through veteran OF in camps or in my opinion Yandy Diaz needs to get a lot of time in LF this spring. Otherwise it would be Ramirez in LF with Urshela at 3B (we would not lose defensively since Urshela is rated better at 3rd than Ramirez).

If anyone would be able to come back from what has all happened it would be Brantley and I am optimistic he will be back to a decent player at least cause of his abilities to make adjustments and the fact he has a strong support cast behind the scenes. Now I don't expect the .300 hitter, but I expect a good season from him.

I've noticed. Thats why I don't respond to much, despite being on here a lot.

The psychological mind weaving that tells us to listen to the doctors who've put him on a path to playing in spring training?

Cross the bridge of reinjury when you get to it. No shortage of internal options in the system, but I'm not playing the "he's done forever" game just because of a belief in deja vu.

Oh...give me a break man...

You can argue with us...just don't come with "when will we give up on Santana" or "Ramirez will never be a useful player" or some other terrible fucking Skip Bayless-esque hottake that takes 0 effort to come up with when you try to argue.

You want to argue? Come with substance, not shit pulled out of your prolapsed ass.

Just like with Skip, when people come with those hot takes, respond with how you'd usually respond, with facts. If that don't work, simply ignore them. If not, it clogs up threads with garbage on both sides of the argument, eggs people on even more, and leads to nothing of substance, which is what you're striving for.

Now back to the thread..

I smell ya.

But responding with what I believed to be facts, both with what has been reported and personal experiences, just got me called someone you "can't argue with" and who is pulling "psychological mind weaving" with my ego.

That's been a problem in here for a while. Looking on the bright side of things gets you called a "Dolan apologist". Arguing against Skip Bayless level debates, then wanting to be left alone gets you called a "fag". Saying you think someone doesn't get re-signed gets you called a "child cancer hater"...etc., etc. And with little to no apologies or repercussions for making it personal for no reason.

I've tried to stay level headed, but its wearing thin, you know?

But you are right...back to the off season...

Surprised no one picked up on the article Bastian wrote today after the Guyer contract which said ownership is encouraging the front office to continue to search the free agent market for upgrades to the team. Seems like ownership is willing to push it a bit farther, which is nice to hear with some nice pieces we could use still out there on the market.

Pushing for Angel Pagan in here a month or so ago seems to have rubbed off on people in here. I would love a signing like that, especially if Brantley ends up being as unhealthy as some of the posters in here have been saying he might be.

It's fascinating to me that Boone Logan is still out there, along with Travis Wood and J.P Howell. I really think we come away with one of them. Howell struggled last season, but is well proven.

Lefty market still seems somewhat saturated, waiting for a domino to fall there.

Trying not to get my hopes up for somebody coming through on a below market or ST invite type deal.

Howell went through a divorce during the season...sure that didn't help his performance.

But I would prefer Logan or Blevins to the rest of the lot, but we'd have to pony up a multi-year deal to get one of them, whereas Howell can probably be had for a 1 year, cheap prove it deal.

And I wouldn't be surprised to see someone throw a chance to start again at Wood.

You'd have thought the dominoes fell when Rzepczynski and Cecil signed really quick, right?

I'm not even hearing a peep about Logan, Blevins, or Wood anywhere I go to look for rumors, which is crazy.

Too busy voicing my disgust with Kenny Lofton falling off the ballot to research anything else tonight.

Dark day for me.
