2016-2017 Indians Off-Season Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
No reason not to acquire Utley if he wants to play some 2B and 3B.

It could allow Jose Ramirez to compete in LF occasionally as well as give Lindor the occasional day off.

He wants to play for a winner, I'm not going to turn him away for Erik Gonzalez.

Nobody else in the organization can play 2B or 3B (maybe Diaz) at the big league level right now, so it's a good insurance option to have.

I want him most of all for the stories I've heard about the prep he puts in for games.

We still have an incredibly young nucleus, with a few more young guys on the cusp of coming up as well, and I think it would be great for them to be exposed to how he goes about his business getting ready for games day in and day out.

Guys learned from Uribe and Napoli last year...but I want them to be around Utley even more. That dude just oozes everything it means to be a professional ballplayer.

Him still being able to swing it, especially against RHP, is just an added bonus.

Plus, the It's Always Sunny references...

If it's me, I'm going Chase Utley 100% of the time.

Nothing wrong with Utley, but I dont see him moving our needle one way or the other very much.

In comparison to Erik Gonzalez, or Michael Martinez, it moves it quite a bit.

Talking about turning a 2 WAR guy who slashed .273/.343/.425 against RHP last season into our bench IF option. Our 2 current candidates for that spot for this upcoming year put up a combined .250/.278/.276 slash vs RHP last year.

Sure would like his bat in the lineup on days where Kipnis or Lindor sit to rest more than anything we have competing for that spot in camp right now.

Also, just a heads up since we've heard "ABs" are a hurdle between the Indians and Utley.

Santana was on radio today saying he expects to play some OF this season, and has been working in the OF this winter. If that's true, that opens some ABs at either 1B or DH.

There aren't too many deals left to make that will move that needle. But in regards to complimentary pieces this would be one of the better options.

I'd rather just stick Utley out there and let Los be Los, to be honest.

Or Ramirez in LF, Utley at 3B.

Likewise...but if Tito is telling Santana he's going to play some OF (maybe to get him ready for Interleague play or potential WS play?), then I'd expect to see him out there a bit.

If anything, its a good selling point to Utley on how he'd get more ABs here with a better 2B already on roster.

There's absolutely no need for that if Brantley is healthy and AJ or AA are on the roster. Especially if Utley signs on and Ramirez gets time in LF.

This isn't me saying this...this is him saying what coaches told him to be ready for...so I'm guessing we're going to see it, otherwise why waste his time in the winter to work on playing in the OF?

And I'd much rather roll with a true OFer or Ramirez in LF in this circumstance...but this isn't my opinion here, this is straight from Carlos' mouth.

It's all fun until Encarnacion gains 20 lbs in spring training and gets arrested clubbing because his BFFs got two free vacations to Florida to hang out with him for spring training...
