2017-18 Cleveland Indians Offseason

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Anybody ready to talk themselves into losing Santana and Bruce and how the offensive production won't drop off? Brantley and Kipnis could be trending downwards as players for all we know. As much shit Santana took, we'll miss the hell out of him. I really don't wanna lose him knowing we have a shot at a World Series with him.

Yeah, it worries me.

Let's say we lose both, the team as of now would likely stand (assuming no moves for simplicity):

LF- Kipnis
CF- Zimmer/Allen
RF- Chisenhall & Guyer
3B- Yandy
SS- Lindor
2B- Jose
1B- Brantley
C- Gomes/Perez
DH- Edwin

2 injury prone guys in Brantley and Chisenhall. Guyer and Kip obviously dealt with their injuries last year.

2 guys learning new positions, Kip and Brantley, who are probably not going to be great out there. Especially inserting Brantley for a Gold Glove caliber 1B.

2 young guys, Yandy and Zimmer, becoming everyday players.

If we lose Santana I hope we can get a cheaper 1B that can fill some production like Moreland, Alonso, Morrison, etc.

Will still be good and win the division handily though

It is a good probability though we may sign a veteran RH OF if Santana goes and Brantley/Chis is moved to first base. So hopefully we find someone decent to replace Santana

You think he is just going to sign a contract with Boston and not let Cleveland make a counteroffer???
Name the last time the Tribe outbid another team for a coveted FA. The ones they have gotten were guys who the market left behind. Santana isn't one of them. The Indians have not and are not going to outbid the Red Sox. I just don't get why people are burying their heads here. He is testing the market and the market blows past what this team can afford. Not what they want to pay- what they can afford. I feel like Mugatu reading this stuff. Or like I'm listening to my buddy who can't accept that his GF has moved on.

Losing Santana will be a huge blow. We all knew Bruce was pretty much a rental, but Santana has been a core piece of our lineup for over half a decade.

Just because plenty of teams have interest doesn't mean he's well out of our price range. There is no way of knowing that right now.

Of position players to get $10m-$18m (Basically discluding Cespedes and Encarnacion) yearly on 3+ years last year:

Dexter Fowler $16.5m, 5 years
Justin Turner $16m, 4 years
Ian Desmond $14m, 5 years
Reddick $13m, 4 years
Trumbo $12.5m, 3 years
Morales $11m, 3 years

I think we can absolutely play ball with 3-4 years in those ranges. Think we are hesitant at $18m+ yearly and at 5+ years

If a player wants to stay, they sign an extension the offseason prior or in spring training. Both sides 'make it work. Otherwise, you only hit the market if your goal is to get paid- and the Indians are never that team. Carlos is not a 33 year old defensively challenged parrot stand, he is not going to be left Cleveland or Bust. If his goal was to stay here he would already have signed. I'm just shocked people can't admit this.

Indians outbid both Toronto and the A's for Edwin.

Indians also outbid the Yankees to steal Bruce from the Mets last season. Understand that its a different circumstance but it happened.

Look back at what you just posted- they outbid Oakland- who is never highest bidder either. And for good reason. The BJs weren't outbid- they offered him 4yrs/80m, he turned it down, and thru moved on quickly once FA started. The Tribe was the last real suitor for him.

I don't get it..Oakland was the highest bidder, we outbid them. What am I missing? Didn't I answer your question? "Name the last time the Tribe outbid another team for a coveted FA. "

We played the long game with Edwin and won out with patience and a good offer when enough time had past and he realized that his original expectations would not be met.

Santana seems primed to be an early market decision. So it could be a totally different dynamic. not sure if that bodes well for the Indians or not, but just don't think it's comparable to the process that led us to getting Edwin

Half the league wants this guy. I just don't see how he comes back?

Move on to option B.

That’s funny cause the big time baseball brains around here feel he’s not needed...
