Holtmann's other two assistants at Butler -- Terry Johnson and Ryan Pedon -- are up for the Bulldogs head coaching job. A source indicated to cleveland.com that Holtmann would bring all three of his Butler assistants to Ohio State provided one of them is not picked to replace him at Butler.

Schrage worked at Butler for one season, joining Holtmann's staff there after stints at Stanford, Duke and Indiana. He was an assistant coach at Stanford from 2008-16, a director of basketball operations and recruiting coordinator at Duke 1999-2008 and student manager at Indiana under former Hoosiers coach Bob Knight.

Gene Smith:

"2017-18 season will be a season of transition. hoping everyone has patience as we go through this"

"While we know we have some work ahead of us. The combo of the University (academics) and the sports program ... in a location with a rich, pool of talent to recruit, beginning with this state. That all supported by Buckeye Nation, the fan base, it would have been too hard to pass up"

LaVall Jordan apparently hired as Butler's new coach...I'd expect Ryan Pedon to be a part of our assistant staff now, which is big.

Pedon is a Columbus guy with a background at a bunch of MAC schools.

This staff is going to be worlds better at building a fence around Ohio.

Pedon is who recruited Kyle Young to Butler away from OSU...so again, watch that situation.

Same with Christian David and Schrage.

According to Butler fans, they've heard re-ups from all of their recruits except for Young and David...

I think Pedon was the MUST-GET from his previous staff, although I was excited to get Schrage on-board.

This truly is huge news as he was already the guy making a lot of the relationships with the Ohio class of '18.

Happening the second Holtmann was hired and Pedon was skipped over.

Chance to be a quick rebuild with the 2018 Ohio class and some guys from the surrounding states who were being recruited by Butler while Holtmann and company were there.

Ohio State remains an option for Goodwin, however, according to the report.

Goodwin, a four-star shooting guard, is the No. 75 overall prospect in the 2018 class, according to 247Sports composite rankings, and the state’s fourth-rated recruit. He committed to Ohio State on Dec. 1, 2014, and held strong in his pledge ever since.

However, the Buckeyes opted to part ways with longtime head coach Thad Matta. Goodwin said publicly he would remain committed following Matta’s firing, however, he wanted to see who Ohio State hired as his replacement before he made any final decisions.

Former Butler coach Chris Holtmann was introduced as the Buckeyes’ replacement for Matta last week. Holtmann and Goodwin were scheduled to meet early last week. Following that meeting, Goodwin opted to reopen his recruitment.

Justin Ahrens, a three-star forward in the 2018 recruiting class, decommitted from Ohio State following the coaching change. Ahrens said he still planned to consider the Buckeyes after a new coach was named.

Darius Bazley, Ohio’s No. 1-ranked player for the 2018 class, announced his decommitment from Ohio State prior to the school parting ways with Matta.

Sucks, but not terribly worried.
