2017 Browns Off Season Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I don't think so. The formula is (Ints+Pass defenses)/targets. Has more to do with playmaking per target than total number of targets. Unless you want to claim Norman, Grimes, and Peters were targeted a ton too..

Not suggesting that, and I'm more than willing to admit I watched less Browns games last year than I have in several years. I do wonder if Boddy-Calhoun's inclusion with those names has to do with the number of times he was targeted early on. Nobody here would suggest he is elite like Norman and Peters, right?

I would agree with your last sentence. I don't think anyone is suggesting he is elite. I would have to be in a good mood to even consider him starting talent. He Browns'd the way to the #1 pick in as good of fashion as I've ever seen in that last game against Pitt. I guess I am just having trouble seeing your point. If he was targeted a lot, but had a high rate of defending/intercepting the ball, then is that a bad thing?

Yeah, I'm asking questions rather than making statements. My opinion on Boddy-Calhoun is that he's nothing special as a slot corner only. I think you can't put him on half of the receivers in the league because he's only 5'9. And yet here we are examining his surprisingly high passes defensed ratio. Is it an outlier or am I way off thinking he was pedestrian in the slot for a pedestrian group of DBs?

That's also evidence that quarterbacks threw at him quite often when he was on the field, right?

I'd just point out that it is not uncommon for QB's to target rookies no matter what, so I'm not sure I'd draw the same conclusion I might if a veteran kept getting targeted.

I thought BBC was something of a bright spot in the secondary last year, especially considering he was a UDFA rookie.

He wasn't completely consistent and absolutely shit the bed the last game but he also had weeks where he looked like the best player in the Browns secondary (high praise, I know). I'm not completely surprised to see BBC on that list because he seemed to consistently be around balls. Maybe not that high, but overall BBC had a pretty decent year.

So, he tests out well on his ratio based purely on his (INT+PBU)/Total Targets.

This number is around 17-18%. The average corner is around 10-11% per the chart.

However, as you mention with the eye test, it says nothing of what happened on the other 83%.

On those targets that were not defended or picked, he may have been horribly out of position. These may have been him getting burnt in a big way.

Instead of balls sailing out of bounds or a QB dirting one intentionally (which would not impact the formula), I would guess a very high percentage of his 83% were catch and runs and back-breaking plays.

Albeit an interesting stat, it's not going to convince me that BBC is an above average corner just because this particular metric has him scored 7-8% higher than the average corner.

Oh sweet......wait... no, wrong brother.

Five years younger than Tramon Williams. Hope he has at least one more good year in him.
