2017 Browns Off Season Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
This team is honestly going in the right direction, but it will most likely be another season before they are in the playoffs. With more high picks next season and cap space, they will fill in the holes they have this year with those assets and become a playoff team. The OLine and DLine got major upgrades and a team should be built from those two areas first and for the most part that is done. LBs are pretty much set, but around the board we are still very young, but there are a lot of analysts that say the Browns could vastly improved their record and get 5-7 wins.

I honestly say this season, everyone roots against the Texans since we own there first two picks in the draft. If they don't make the playoffs, we could have two 15ish picks in the 1st and 2nd rounds. So even if they are facing the Steelers, Ravens or Bengals we root against the Texans since them losing is our gain. I think we will see a lot more life on both sides of the ball and with whoever starts at QB, with the line we have, we should at least have decent numbers from our QB

I daydream about this team being relevant quite often. About the only reference I have in mind is via old NFL Films yearbooks and old VHS broadcasts people have posted on youtube.

I relish the idea of talking up playoff seeding, if we can get home field and all that stuff.

More often than not it feels like the Browns get punked early by the Steelers or Ravens, then we're out of it before we can even begin to even think about such things. We get subjected to talking heads on various sports talk stations talking about the draft, how "We fucked up by not drafting "player x"", and the team just getting trashed in general by the media locally, nationally.

I just want different. I want some positivity and I kinda want it to be long term you know? With a league supposedly so full of parity, it'd be nice to be unsure what the hell could happen for once instead of just bracing for the worse.

I remember attending Browns Oilers wildcard game as a young boy. We lost when they called Thane Gash ( I think) off sides on a onside kick recovery. Even though we lost, still a great memory of the old stadium and the old Browns. They played we will rock you about 20 different times, and we were down to fourth string qb Don Strock. I remember eating one of the old personal pocket stadium Pizzas as we almost staged a comeback vs warren moon. Believe it or not the game was not a sell out and if I remember blocked out of local tv.

Honestly, I think in 2018 we should be going for a wild card spot without a doubt if the FO is allowed to keep doing what they are doing right now. We have a bunch of high draft picks and cap space for next season and honestly I think they will go for it, filling in holes with guys through both means. I don't doubt with this new regime we will make the playoffs in a year or two so hopefully we can make more of those memories

I was at the oiler game the previous week. It was a weird situation were we played the same team 2 weeks in a row in cleveland. I was in the dog pound and that was the game they had to move sides in the middle of the game because the Oilers were about to score and too many people were throwing things from the dog pound at Warren Moon's head.

Fun times.

Asked if it’s sinking in for Brantley, Simmons said, “Absolutely, it’s getting through. From the time he stepped in for minicamp until he stepped off the field today was night and day.”

Earlier this offseason, two-time Pro Bowl cornerback Joe Haden told the tale of his first meeting with new Browns defensive coordinator Gregg Williams. Haden explained Williams got in his face and told him if he hadn’t played through two groin injuries last season, the coach would have told the front office to cut him.

“I think I got his attention. That’s all it is,” Williams said. “There are lots of ways to go. Pat you on the back. That hasn’t worked here, so why would we be surprised that all of a sudden we have to do something different?

“My job is to effect change. If you can’t effect change, you have to do something else. He has been extremely focused. I don’t care how I did it. You should see how hard he’s worked in the weight room. That’s his idea. That’s not my idea. That’s great.”

Finally the Joe Haden ride on reputation seems to be coming to a close. He has been coasting now for quuuuuuite a few seasons

He played fairly well the year he signed the huge extension in 2014, didn't earn the type of contract he signed but the Browns had cap space so they overpaid. The past two years, he would have been cut if not for all the guaranteed money. We know he is competitive but has been worn thin from all the losing. I'm not ready to write Haden off. So much that was wrong with his mindset was a product of the dysfunction.

Haden definitely has had some injuries that have slowed him down and made his play suffer. He can't stay healthy. I don't deny the losing has worn on him argument, but how much of it is the losing mindset and how much of it is injury, it's hard to tell. Hopefully he can be healthy and we can really see what we have.

However; there is no doubt, his play has not been good and the last 2 years he hasn't been worth the money on the field.

Haden was playing solid at the beginning of last season (remember the 2 INT game vs Baltimore?). I think he still can play at a high level. He needs to stay healthy though. Hard to give a guy a fair evaluation when he is never healthy.
