2017 Buckeyes Football

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
So many games being on Fox is going to be weird.

One night game in The Shoe this year? Lame.

The Game remaining at noon? Lame.

Well with the possibility of tribe playoff games on Saturday nights in October this may not be the worst thing.

KERRY COOMBS PROMOTED TO ASSISTANT COORDINATOR OF OHIO STATE'S DEFENSE

Kerry Coombs received a raise of $75,000 ahead of the 2017 football season, his fifth with Ohio State. The salary bump will carry a new title with it.

The Buckeyes promoted Coombs to assistant coordinator of their defense

Coombs was also named 2017 national recruiter of the year by Rivals after laying the groundwork to sign five highly-ranked cornerbacks, including the top two in the country in Jeffrey Okudah and Shaun Wade and the best junior college prospect at the position, Kendall Sheffield.

Ranking the Best Defensive Lines for 2017 College Football Season

7. Michigan Wolverines

  1. Why they're here: How can you lose a slew of studs like Taco Charlton, Chris Wormley and Ryan Glasgow and still have one of the best lines in the country? That's because the recruiting from former coach Brady Hoke to Jim Harbaugh didn't slack in the least. Hurst is the steady playmaker, and with plenty of able freshmen ready to join the rotation, the Wolverines won't miss a beat.
1. (Tied) Ohio State Buckeyes (w/Clemson)

Why they're here:

Lewis is the surest bet, but Hubbard and Bosa have higher ceilings. To give you an idea of how talented Hubbard is, he was a high school safety. That trio is causing some talk of rabbit packages galore where the Buckeyes will throw pass-rushers from all different angles on the field at once. Jalyn Holmes, Robert Landers, Dre'Mont Jones and Mike Hill are all productive returning players, too. The Big Ten had better watch out. This has the potential to be one of the best D-lines in college football history.

Koombs is a great recruiter obviously, and his record as a HS coach is impeccable. But, IMO, the secondary was really bad when he first took over. Fickel got a lot of grief in 2013, I think he was let down by a bad secondary. Ash took over the DBs and everything normalized. I hesitate making Coombs anything more than special teams coordinator and ace recruiter.

If this is just a symbolic way to give him a raise for his recruiting exploits, then it's well earned. But if we assume Schiano will be a head coach ASAP, does this make Coombs the next DC? That would worry me.

No worries, that is not the end goal here.

Yeah. The promotion was probably a pat on the back for a job well done in a lot of different areas. I'm not sure why guys don't just get raises or bonuses like sales guys when they recruit well. I guess it's an ego boost to get a title change or something. If Schiano leaves, I'd expect a Schiano or Wilson type to come in and be a Super Duper Defensive Coordinator or something to stay one level ahead of Coombs. I'd expect Coombs to be here for the long haul. I think he's hit his ceiling. That's not a slap in his face, but he does well what he is doing right now, and there's no shame in that.

Don't think I'll be making it to a game this year. Just not sure I have the time off to do my week in Ohio trip. This hasn't been a good year health wise so I've taken like two weeks of sick time alone already plus I need time off for the holidays. Don't want to press it. Sad, I was really wanting to see the Buckeyes again, although the more I think about it the less I really mind with the terrible seating situation at Ohio Stadium and the amount of money tickets would cost.

I watched that the other day, such a rollercoaster of emotions.

I ended up watching the highlights of Bama/Oregon games today for some reason and the band entering the field, doing script Ohio and Carmen.

I almost bought tickets to the Sooners game and Michigan :chuckle:

I can not fucking wait. Season needs to get here. I am still debating if I wanna go to Indiana, Oklahoma, Michigan, or a shitty non-conference this year.

Doesn't deserve it's own thread and don't know where else to put this. Don't let this derail the thread from this years team:

Chris Spielman suing Ohio State

Chris Spielman, who played for the Buckeyes from 1985-87, was a consensus All-American linebacker and is now a football analyst for Fox Sports, has filed a class action lawsuit to block Ohio State from the use of images of players for promotional purposes.

Spielman filed individually and as an equity member of "Profectus Group DBA The College Football Players Club" and alleges that the university and its partners, including IMG, Honda and Nike, unfairly use college athletes rights for financial gain.

One specific instance of this is a poster of Spielman from his playing days that is an advertisement for Honda. Spielman is a local spokesperson for Byers Dublin Madza-Subaru.

“This litigation is not about Chris Spielman, it is about all of the former college athletes who are unfairly being used by IMG and other corporate entities for financial gain,” Spielman said. “I personally do not have a financial interest in the outcome of the banner program as my share in any recovery will be donated directly to the athletic department of The Ohio State University,

“My concern is about the exploitation of all former players across this nation who do not have the platform to stand up for themselves while universities and corporations benefit financially by selling their name and likenesses without their individual consent.

“My hope is that this litigation will level the playing field for those affected players, and that they too can benefit from the dollars flowing into collegiate athletics.”

Although not named in the suit, former Heisman Trophy winning running back Archie Griffin has backed Spielman's lawsuit.

“Although I am not the named Plaintiff in the class action litigation, I am in full support of the right of former athletes to receive compensation from corporations and universities who benefit from the unauthorized use of players names and likenesses," Griffin said.
