2017 Cleveland Browns Defense

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Anyone else do this in Madden?

Heck yeah! Though in the older games it is usuallly safeties to LB and LBs to DEs since the ratings, if switched right, go way up and then trade guys for extra picks and do it again next season. (Then everyone gets switched to punter the year they are signing and then I get everyone on 7 year contracts for less than a million a season)

Either way, it's the offseason, let these guys have a bit of fun and see what comes out of it.

You would.

One reason Ogbah and Kirksey made these lists was simply being on the field so much. The Browns gave up a lot of sustained drives, and the opportunity to rack up high totals in stops was there for the taking. Am I still excited to see this defense in action? Absolutely, I'm not being a homer when I picture this group as the most improved defensive team from 2016 to 2017.

One concern I've had: Why go after Calvin Pryor if you drafted Peppers to play strong safety? Pryor never seemed comfortable as a strong safety with the Jets after being known as a hard hitting deep free safety at Louisville. Is Pryor getting a shot at FS or is he in a battle at SS? Is McCourty getting a look at FS or is he more of an outside CB? How did Ed Reynolds and Kai Nacua look in the "voluntary offseason workouts?"

That DLine looks so much better than it did last season, but I am still questioning not adding more depth than they have to that Secondary. Pryor may though be able to find a better fit in Cleveland than in New York since Williams is likely going to find the best spot for his skills and not just SS. I don't think anyone really knows what we will get from our secondary. Haden is never healthy and he is supposed to be our leader in that group.

Well, for one taking a flyer on a still young, but talented safety for only a role player who is not coming back next year is probably the main reason...

But if the other being, I think you're gonna see a lot more 4-2-5 fronts.. Either Peppers or Pryor is going to assume a Mark Barron role in this defense, where Williams converts a safety to outside backer... The defense is really thin at linebacker after Collins and Kirksey but with them being on the field 90% of the time, I'd say a third safety is more than likely going to be that 11th man...

So your wild early July guess is McCourty at free safety, Peppers at "Marc Barron backer" in the 4-2-5 with Pryor coming in as the "T.J.McDonald safety" or traditional strong safety? Just interested in hearing predictions on the defensive backs since I don't have a lot of questions about the defensive line/linebackers. Agreed on linebacker depth, I hope Schobert makes a jump as a second year player. I liked him as a pick last year and he kind of disappointed me.

There is going to be a plethora of LB talent in this upcoming draft. Lots of depth at that position where Williams and company can find some great depth options in the early or middle rounds.

Since what they currently have amounts to two good starters and a bunch of tweeners and special teams guys, it will be interesting see if anyone can grab that role as the depth guy.

Because I can think of a bunch of names I'd have in mind for 2018.

Never liked Schobert on the outside. He was just totally miscast in that position in the NFL.

Now, apply his size, skill set, and intellect to the middle in a 4-3.... that has the makings of a very nice fit.

Schobert and Carder are cut from the same cloth, as @AZ_ pointed out. They are both a little undersized, neither is an athletic specimen as the NFL goes... but they have a high motor and seem to find the ball carrier, diagnose the right place to be. They had great production at the college level, but seem like backups in the NFL. What I like about Schobert over Tank is that he can get to a QB in a blitz, and he also drops into coverage fairly well for a shorter guy. Dominique Alexander is even smaller, but has the best speed of the group. I'll be nervous if Kirksey or Collins get hurt because it's a wide open competition for third linebacker.

I think wide open competition is a bit kind, i would have to say its a shit show after Kirksey and Collins.

For sure LB Depth is something we will need to address in the 3-5th rounds next year and maybe even in free agency.

I initially thought that's the role they had earmarked for Peppers when they drafted him, but they've been pretty consistent in making sure they mention Peppers and strong safety in the same breath any time he's brought up... I'm sure they'll move him around some but it seems like they're pretty set on keeping him in the strong safety role...

On the other hand, if you want to put someone in the Marc Barron role I suppose we can assume Calvin Pryor will likely get that... Since Peppers will be at SS and I can't see any logical defensive guru playing them consistently together in the same defensive backfield without a true center-fielder back there..

I'm not sure on McCourty; I really think he stays more so outside because of the lack of depth we have at CB... Heck, he might even start and they might slide Jamar Taylor inside.. I mean after Haden, there's really not much competition and with Howard Wilson being out, I would have to think there's more of a need to play McCourty outside then over the top...

Schobert was a disappointment for sure; seemed like the physical nature of the game kind of stunted his game a bit, which is surprising since he was pretty productive as a pass rusher in the Big Ten... Let's hope a year of seasoning under his belt can help because he doesn't have any standout traits...

I really think Domonique Alexander is gonna blossom into a good player with some increased playing time, kinda of by default... It scares the bejesus out of me that they're talking up Tank Carder as the starting middle 'backer, granted though they won't likely be in their "base" 43 look all too much... I'm guessing you're gonna see a few claims on LBs once roster cuts come along...
