2017 Cleveland Indians

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
In looking up some tie breaking procedures, I found something interesting that I actually didn't know was a thing.

If 2 teams tie for a division lead at the end of the season, they automatically play a tie-breaker, even if the loser is guaranteed a wild card spot.

So if the Twins take Wild Card #2, and the Yankees and Red Sox tie for the AL East lead (and both have a better record than Minnesota), then they'd play a game to determine the AL East champ. Then, the loser would host Minnesota, and we'd play the winner of that game (assuming we hold on to #1, of course). So we'd either get Minnesota or a team who just had to play 2 extra games.

That's potentially huge.
Yes lets finish above Houston!
Finally got rid of the Irving profile pic and it feels great.

Weird situation where the Indians can offer more money than the Yankees, Red Sox, Cubs, and Dodgers due to CBA restrictions.

Edit: Obviously we basically have no shot still.
More money and WS contention :chuckle:.

Surely he is LA bound.

Why do we have no shot?

From what I've read money isn't an issue here because of the MLB's rules for an international player under 25

So do you want to play for the team that won 21 in a row with a HOF manager or do you go want to play with the human version of Shrek and no matter how well you play always be criticized in New York?

I have to think we are one of if not the best baseball situations anyone can pick putting money aside

I agree, logically, from a baseball standpoint, we should be right up there in the running.

But, for a 23-year old superstar from Japan, I just don't see a cultural fit compared to places like Seattle and San Fran. He will also be able to step in right away on those staffs. If I had to name the favorites it would be Mariners, Yankees, Giants, in that order.

While the attendance still bothers me, here are a few numbers I crunched last night.

As of right now, we are good for 24th in attendance. That obviously will change on a nightly basis, and odds are we will be closer to 20 by the time the season is over.

As for TV ratings, we are #1 or #2 by most articles I have seen. Typically boasting an 8.0 per game (120,000 households). Not bad considering we are the #32 metropolitan area in the US. I believe we are #19 when it comes to TV markets.

To put our market in perspective, the Cleveland Indians need 1.71% of the total Cleveland Metropolitan area to commit to atleast 1 ticket per year to gain 100% occupancy ( or 1.38 tickets sold per person). Only 4 teams need a higher % of their population needed to sell out: Denver, Cincinnati, Milwaukee & Kansas City. Of those teams, only 1 has a team in each of the major 3 sports leagues. The others each only have 2.

If you factor in % of capacity, the Tribe sits right at 70.89% (Average per game/max capacity). Good for 17th of 30 MLB teams.

Obviously more attendance would be nice, but given the size of the market and the number of pro teams, it doesnt look that bad on paper. One factor I don't feel like diving into is the average household income for each of these metro areas. We have to be in the bottom 3rd I would imagine.

Any idea how a team is going to play him? He looks like a great pitching prospect, but his batting is out of this world.

Maybe an American team can DH & pitch him every 5 days. Its such an odd situation because I feel like pitchers are wrapped in bubble wrap the 4 days they aren't pitching.

Is Otani a pitcher and DH his off days?

Just curious after reading about him what do you with his talents?

Because which ever team signs him will circumvent the shit out of the rules and make some sort of illegal side deal so he recoups all the money he's about to lose by coming over two years early.

The MLB supposedly sent out a warning about this recently and it might deter a team or two from doing it but I don't think it will ultimately prevent it from happening altogether.
