2017 Cleveland Indians

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Is there anyone in our org who projects to a UTIL guy who just doesn't suck at hitting?

It's so strange that every team has one, yet a good UTIL guy is just so unbelievably rare.

Erik Gonzalez

Also, if a UTIL guy hits well, he usually moves into an every day role (Jose Ramirez)

I mean, I understand that.

Example; Jamey Carroll. Largely not an every day guy, hit 272/349/338 for his career.

Cant deal with another year of platoon infielders who can't hit.

That's a pretty poor line. Sub-.700 OPS, Career 85 OPS+. That's a well below average hitter.

Nearly identical to Mike Aviles actually.

But, in the end, that's basically what you're hoping to get out of your UTIL guy. Passable offense, and multiple positions played at a decent level.

Jose was our utility guy coming out of camp last year, and he raked his way into an every day role. Aviles was par for the course as a UTIL guy before that.

Erik Gonzalez projects as a decent hitter. So, let's hope he's ready to contribute when called upon.

I will say though, this is the first year in a while where our UTIL infielder shouldn't have a near every day role. We have guys entrenched throughout the IF now.

I'd say Naquin, Almonte, and Gonzalez are absolutely locks for the roster barring a surprise trade, or an injury. There's nobody currently on the roster really threatening their spots.

I don't expect them not to make the roster right now, but we will bring in various veterans to compete with them so you never know who shows up. Jack Hannahan years ago out of nowhere earned a roster spot so never say never, but until we see who we bring in to compete these guys are on the roster. I feel we will bring in someone with a known name on a minor league contract in the OF.

Now this is an odd idea, but Oakland just released CF Brett Eibner who is a solid defensive CF who has a streaky bat, but has minor league options left. Would it be smart to pick him up while DFA'ing like an Aguilar who is out of options and seeing if we can get him through waivers? Aguilar doesn't have a spot on the roster long term now, so maybe just getting someone like Eibner would be smart cause of his defense.

To me an utility guy should be defensive first before hitting and I think most teams have that idea as well. If my main guy is out, it is easier to find a defensive guy rather than a good hitting bench player. If he can hit well then he will earn a starting spot hence why utility bench players end up not being star hitters.

Spring Training is going to be so fucking fun. I wish I had the money to make the trip. Indians take real good care of their fans that show up everyday there.

My ballpark buddy had so much shit from pictures, autographs, equipment, even late night drinks.

Honestly no surprises there at all, though only Olson and Martin have MLB experience but if major injuries happen they are the short list for additions. All have been solid minor league guys and Zimmer, Allen and Diaz I feel are our future OFs and Stamets I think will end up being Johnny McDoland (aka the guy who if played everyday would win a gold glove but never could hit lol)

Martin doesn't have any MLB experience. And it will take 3 or 4 injuries for them to make the team...not happening.

That's right they Returned Martin right when the season started not a week or two in. Part of me always thinks they returned him after the season started since he didn't play early in the season for Columbus

You never know when guys will hit the pros to be sincere. Hannahan never really played until he got here in Cleveland and Gomes was pretty much a backup minor league catcher who played other positions until we got him. We don't know when guys show up

Nellie may end up on the 40 man roster if we dont keep Aguilar when we try to outright him, since he is the next in line for the 1st base position. Either way all those guys are on the short list of guys we will see if injuries happen.

Will they be doing the weiner dog races?
