I think in any trade for Goldschmidt or Freeman, we move Santana in the deal too, no? Gives them that compensatory first rounder when Carlos leaves in free agency.

I think I'd do that deal--but man are we gutting our farm system for this run.

That would be my preference, and I'm sure the Indians prefer a 3 year deal as well. And I can't tell you how much I'd love a front loaded deal in this case...especially as his defensive role diminishes over the next few seasons.

But the interesting point is it might soon be his and his agents preference as well. Pretty clear they aren't getting the 4 year deal they wanted coming in, so they might as well try for a 3 year deal, or a 2+1 player option/mutual option deal, and then try to scrape out one more multi-year deal in 2019 or 2020 before retiring or signing some of these 1/16 deals vets like Beltran and Holliday are signing.

Also want to add...at Desmond's introductory presser today he and the Rockies GM talked a lot about their planning and excitement for him to play 1B for them, and their focus is now entirely on improving their bullpen...takes them out on him and Trumbo as well I would guess.
