2017 Spring Training Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Nothing has suggested that... except his lack of meaningful at bats in how long now?

Asking a question is far from freaking out or panicking. You just get irritated every time somebody isnt looking at something with the utmost positive outlook. Just because the Indians tell us Brantley is fine, means absolutely zilch after what has gone on with him. They already brought him back once telling us he was fine. How did that work out? Do you really not understand the skepticism? Honest question.

I get irritated at people throwing the board into a tizzy for no reason.

Until I have a reason to not believe Brantley will be his normal self, I'll keep acting like he will.

Nothing has come out yet about him having a set back, or him not expected to be ready for the season. So I will continue to value that, plus my personal experience with the same injury, over overreactions from this board...and I'll keep making that known on the board as well.

Mar is trolling off a tee until at least midway through spring.

He can step up to full trolling by opening day, if all goes well.

He's not a power hitter, so this shouldn't matter. Guy generates most of his power from his swing mechanics, not his strength anyways.

Oh I know hes not, I figured once he is out there he will have more of the 2012/2013 type of numbers is what I am projecting from him. I am more thinking the .280 average with 8-10 HRs with like 35 doubles type of season. Though I am hoping he can take the walks like he did in 2015.

It seems like both Brantley and Austin Jackson will not be ready to start spring playing when the team starts games, but I figured as much. Jackson it seems will have to really have a good spring to make the team. Brantley they are going to take slower than the other guys, so no rush for him.

Maybe. I always took that to mean you need somebody, if you're counting on them. As in, damn, we need Brantley back.

Who knows what was meant.
I think you've been misinterpreting that phrase.

Counting on definitely means expecting.

They are expecting him back for opening day.

Since you aren't someone who will insult me if I do this...at least I don't think you will...

Can I ask you why? What has been said/reported that makes it seem he like won't be the same player again?

I get the concerns about health moving forward, re-injury risk, workload...but where is the loss of talent/skill belief coming from from people?

I am concerned he will never be the same again.

The why is because he has a chronic shoulder injury that took 2 rehabs to come back from. Chronic injuries and sports never mix.

No I am not going to sit here and pretend I know whats going on, I am not a trainer, coach, front office, etc. I do believe the Indians as they think he will be ready, but it is concerning because of the nature of the injury.

I will add this though. I am rooting for Brantley to fully recover and excited of adding an all star player to a team that went to the world series.

It was actually two different injuries. The first surgery repaired a torn labrum while the second was done to relieve his biceps tendonitis.

Hopefully the bicep tendonitis was something caused by the initial surgery and isnt chronic now. It was his non-throwing shoulder so it will not have as much effect on him as it would if it was his throwing shoulder. I deal with a chronic condition (lost me a D1 scholarship) and honestly even a chronic issue is very manageable once he gets a good routine down hence why I feel he should be fine since he has an extremely good staff around him and he is very good at making adjustments. His bat speed/react will be slightly down and so will his power numbers at first until he gets his adjustments in place. He will always be a fairly good contact hitter even with these issues, so I expect his slugging will be a little lower as well to start the season but progressively get stronger. He just may have more scratch days since he is more likely now to get inflammation in his right elbow than he did when he was younger. I think he will honestly be fine in due time. This season will be like 12/13 season and next year if the problems are manageable/dont persist he will be back to the 2015 form that he was.

Don't think I have. If I say, "I'm counting on you for this," it doesnt necessarily mean, "I know you'll be good for this."

But it's all semantics, in the end. Bimbo is right about no news on setbacks. That doesnt mean everything is fine, as Lee pointed out. Will believer when I see. Cautiously optimistic.

A SLAP tear is not a chronic shoulder injury.

Again, I feel like I've said this too many times in here....I've had this injury before, and have recovered in full both times...and I was an undisciplined college student during my rehab, while Brantley is a professional getting professional guidance...

The biggest concern moving forward with me is how his strength and stabilization in the areas around his shoulder are doing. The biggest thing they have you focus on for rehab for this injury is range of motion and stability, the latter of which is very hard to do in a short period of time without overworking atrophy riddled muscle after being in an immobilizer for ~2 months...which I'm guessing is exactly what happened to Brantley with his biceps, since he tried to rehab and get back as fast as possible.

The original surgery, the one for the labral tear, took me over 6 months to get back to normal from...Brantley last year tried to do it in half the time (surgery in November, hitting again by February)...the timeline now having him 15 months removed from that shoulder surgery, as opposed to 3, is why I believe he will be fine this year, and why I've said if he isn't, he'll never be fine again for the rest of his career.

Yeah.. you've definitely been misusing that phrase :chuckle:

I'm aware we're arguing semantics, but you're the one who started it. The Indians were clearly saying that they expect Brantley to be ready for opening day.

Huh? To count on means to depend on someone/something. Look it the fuck up man.

What does expecting even mean at this point? Expecting can mean multiple things. It could mean they believe he will be back. It could mean they are depending on him to be back. These are two different things. They expected him back before. It didnt happen. Multiple times.

Timelines, timelines, timelines...

Timelines, timelines, timelines...

Whatever. Fine. None of us really know anyways so I'm not going to bother. Brantley will be back and playing at All Star level by May. Whatever you say. I hope you're right dude.

D Wreck must have realized he was wrong. Maybe he typed it into Google and saw this:

count on someone or something
to rely on someone or something; to depend on someone or something. We can count on Bill to get the job done. Can I count on this car to start every morning of the year?
