2017 Trade Deadline

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Marco Estrada is the one I'm watching. The Blue Jays look like probable sellers, Estrada is a free agent at the end of the year, Shapiro-Antonetti/Chernoff connection...it seems like a good possibility the teams will talk.

When I originally posted this it looked like an OF was needed. With Zimmer emerging and Jackson playing well, it no longer sppears so. That means starting pitchers:

Starting Pitchers Potentially Available

Brett Anderson
Chris Archer
Trevor Cahill
Alex Cobb
Gerrit Cole
Bartolo Colon
Johnny Cueto
R.A. Dickey
Marco Estrada
Scott Feldman
Jaime Garcia
Sonny Gray
Jeremy Hellickson
Ian Kennedy
Francisco Liriano
Jose Quintana
Clayton Richard
Tyson Ross
Hector Santiago
Jason Vargas

I would add Ivan Nova to that list, although it may be strictly wishful thinking on my part.

Wonder if the Jays fall out of contention any more than they already have if they start listening to offers on Marco Estrada or J.A. Happ.

That front office knows a lot about our farm, and they're getting old and need to kick start a rebuild soon.

Still the same...

The 2nd part is obviously still true but the Jays are 24-16 since this post and remain 2 GB in the Wild Card. They're moving in the right direction now that they're more healthy. They could be buyers a month from now.

Estrada hasn't exactly been a part of that turnaround though. He's struggled recently, and it still doesn't change the fact that he's a free agent after this season. Think he can be had for a mid tier guy too, which makes him intriguing, even if I hate the idea of trading for a guy for half a season.

They're also getting Sanchez back soon too, and with Stroman, Happ, and Biagini, they can expend Estrada and still hunt for a wild card IMO.

Regardless, any success they are going to have will come from their offense more than their pitching...but with their contracts and that depleted farm, they would be wise to move a soon to be 34 year old who is about to be a free agent...

Yeah he's had a brutal June. It makes sense that they'd look to deal him at the deadline considering his age and being a free agent, but if they're still in contention I have a hard time seeing them trading away one of their Top 3 arms unless someone is overpaying.

They do have lots of capable SPs though, we haven't even mentioned Liriano. Assume Biagini goes back to the pen if/when everyone is healthy.

I don't mind getting another veteran starter, but the question is, what are we willing to give up? What are you guys willing to part with for a Sonny Gray?

Santana is gone after this season, Chisenhall, Tomlin, Brantley and the bullpen are all free agents in 2019. This is the year to win it, but being a small market team, we also cannot trade too much of our prospects either. Guys like Meija, Allen, Zimmer, Clevinger, Bradley are all likely not to be included in a deal.

Santana has a club option. I wouldn't call him gone after this season, unless you are his agent or know something we don't know.

I know Kluber, Carrasco, Salazar, Bauer, Clevinger/Tomlin sounds good after the ASB, but learn from last year, we can never have enough depth at starting pitching. If the Tribe can pull off a 3rd quality SP then we'll feel alot more comfortable.

I'm expecting Salazar to flip flop back into the guy he was in last year's first half. It has to even out for a talent like him.

There's a bunch of SP's out there and more than some aren't worth reading off, like Brett Anderson. But who is worth it?

If Salazar returns to the pitcher that he was at the first half of last season, this team is returning to the World Series. However, he's posted an ERA over 6 since last July, while his walk and home run totals are obscene. What makes you expect him to return to form when he's activated from the DL soon?
