2018-2019 Tank Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Yeah I mean Waiters as 6th man might have been good for his career in retrospect. A good defender at the 2 who could grow into his role on the team could have been cool, but then how does JR who was crucial to the championship run turn out?

Lot of what ifs there. I said we should swing on Stephen Adams or Giannis because you ought to just get a physical freak if no one wows you otherwise. Should have listened to me! Except I don't want Adams 25 per contract.

If we had Giannis in 2017 we are talking about 4 peating

It might have been one of the harder drafts for scouts but also one of the poorest scouted drafts in history. You pointed out the question marks with Oladipo. Giannis was a complete unknown. Gobert ended up going 27th. There were questions how good McCollum was playing in a weak conference. Steven Adams didn't even put up impressive numbers in his one year at Pitt.

Those guys should have been the top 5. Otto Porter would round out the top 6 and I'm not even sure who would be in the top 10 after that because they are just a bunch of average players.

"In June 2017, suspecting that Irving wanted out of Cleveland, Griffin had the framework of a deal done that not only would have brought Paul George to Cleveland from Indiana, but additional pieces from at least one other team in exchange for Irving and other Cavs.

But Griffin wanted to talk to Irving and his agent, Jeff Wechsler, before making the trade, and Irving’s camp wouldn’t take the meeting until Griffin had a new contract from the Cavs. When Griffin’s deal expired and he couldn’t come to an agreement with Gilbert, the deal he’d outlined for Irving died."

This doesn't take into account the fact that Gilbert seem to know Lebron was leaving and PG13 was on his last year of his contract. The Cavs would have been left with nothing if both left. It also makes no mention of the Kevin Love for PG13 3 way trade, that would have actually made us better.

It mentions that Griff could have done the trade anyway without talking to Kyrie first. But it doesn't explain why Koby couldn't have done the exact same trade after Griff was gone

Or was it that Griff was just being petulant, and deliberately killed the deal because he wasn't getting an extension?

I wonder if this deal was the reason why Griff didn't get a new contract. It could have been Griff went out and sought out this deal while Gilbert, Koby, and the rest of the front office might not have been on board for it. Koby and Gilbert seem to try to get a Kevin Love for PG13 deal done after Griff was gone. I think stuff like this comes out 2 years later because no one can remember the timeline.

LeBron, PG13, and Love really didn't make sense as a big 3 because someone would always have to play out of position. LeBron, Kyrie, and PG13 made alot more sense.

It did come out that Griff and Gilbert's visions for the team didn't match up and that's why they didn't give Griff a new contract. I think Gilbert always wanted options if LeBron left and Griff seem to be all in on using up every asset in LeBron's last year of his contract.

That's kind of the thing - the story raises more questions than it answers. And from the way it is written, we know that neither Dan, nor Griff, nor Koby is the source. So who is, and why should we believe their version of events?

Pretty much any potential leakers could have their own agenda that may affect what they choose to tell members of the media.

One would have to think that Gilbert was likely clear in his vision to stay flexible post LBJ rather than leaving the team in an abyss with one year left on his contract.
Griffin was so overrated it’s sad. Trade trade trade trade leave nothing.

Be serious...we were left with nothing anyway. Colin Sexton might be a little something in the long run, but in the short run he's nothing and we're in a rebuild. Irving plus somebody else for PGIII plus something would have been light years better than what actually happened.

We are in a rebuild but the Irving trade did give us the assets and flexibility to jump start the rebuild. We are in a better position then 2010 and this year wasn't a wasted year because Sexton, Cedi, and Zizic got to develop.

Also I don't think the PG13 for Irving trade would have ever happened unless Irving asked to be traded too. That might have been why Griff needed to talk to him. Gilbert wasn't giving up Irving for PG13 at that time. Like I said earlier a big 3 of LeBron, PG13, and Love makes little sense, someone was going to always be playing out of position.

Lebron, PG3, and Love wouldn't have made sense? Did you not see Lebron playing guard for huge stretches of his career in Cleveland? But honestly, if we got PG3 I would have been fine trading Love too as long as we could get a decent return.

The Irving trade was awful, I'm astounded people keep defending it. Our rebuild was not "jump started", we are starting the rebuild at the bottom of the league and rolling the dice on the lottery, same as any other rebuild. It's nice that Sexton had a decent rookie season and the team looked mildly frisky for a cellar-dweller at the end of the year, but don't kid yourself about our current talent level.

I agree the Irving trade was awful but Koby has at least recovered from it with other trades. I don't think Gilbert was ever going to give up Irving without a good asset for the future or that they could flip when LeBron left. PG13 wasn't that. I'm saying the 2010 roster was alot worse and Gilbert/Koby made sure it wasn't that bad this time around.

I also don't think LeBron was willing to play guard late in his career. He or Lue forced Love to play center and Crowder basically played PF while listed as SF while here. I don't doubt they would have done the same thing to Paul George if he was traded for Irving. LeBron liked playing SF because it was the easiest position on his body. He shuffled all the PF duties that he didn't like on to Crowder.

That part I bolded is new to me, I never saw that before. No it doesn't mention Love in that either. Yet I feel there's more to that deal than what has been let out.

The bolded part doesn't make sense. If we assume it is true, then Griffin preferred to let the deal die rather than trade Kyrie without talking to him first...when it was Kyrie who was refusing to talk to him in the first place.

Only logical explanation is that Griff knew that Gilbert would refuse to trade Kyrie and he had to get Kyrie to formally ask for a trade request.

We know Kyrie asked Griff to trade him in 2016 after winning the championship and Griff convinced him to stay. We just don't know if Griff told anyone else of that trade request.

It looks like whatever is true , Griff didn't have time to execute anything.

Other potential explanations are 1) the story isn't accurate, 2) Griffin was pissed that his contract wasn't being extended so he killed the trade deliberately.

Why not? Trades have been done in a single day.
