2018 Around the MLB Thread

Benchmark for Brantley. I think he'll have a harder time getting that with his injury history and OF defense concerns. Maybe 3 yrs $42m?

I would actually assume Brantley gets more than Cutch

Really, even with the injury history he is worth a free flier on in your opinion? He has missed so many games and the Jays at 38 million for a reason imo.

Blue Jays also are not a contending club so they want to get rid of Tulo to make room for the prospects to make the team.

I agree with AZ_ on Tulo, if he is willing to play 3B/be an utility man for us, I think it’s a no risk situation since he wants to rebuild his career so he will sign a one year deal with incentives and/or opt out option if he doesn’t make the club. He is getting paid so he doesn’t have to find the best paying job but one where he can get job security for in 2020.

Our utility infielders currently are Moroff and Stamets who are just pure defensive guys and not great hitters. Having a Tulo on the bench/be our utility for a season would actually make this team a better club in the end. He has been an above average SS his whole career with never a season below .249 in batting average. Stamets and Moroff don’t even have a batting average of .250 at AAA (Stamets .223, Moroff .233) so Tulo would be a great pick up and since we are a contender with two spots open 3rd and utility, it’s a no risk move.

He’s not wrong though, Brantley will not get any less than what McCutchen signed for. I agree I think he will get more and sadly with the links pretty much not linking the Indians even in talks with him, it’s likely he is signing elsewhere unless he is waiting to sign for a minute to see if the Indians can free up the money to resign him.

As a small market team, seeing 32 year old Andrew McCutchen get 3 years, $50 mil is very, very sobering.

I know the Phillies outfield sucks as well, but nearly $17 mil per year for someone like him is pretty surprising. Was not expecting a market like that for him.

On a per year basis, he's slotted to be one of the top 10 paid outfielders in 2019 and 2020. Sheesh. In 2021, the last year of his deal (at 35), he's currently slotted to be the 6th highest paid outfielder in baseball on a per year basis.

Oakland and the Cubs are definitely same tier as the Indians. Hell, I've got Oakland pegged a tier beneath us to be honest. They had a great regular season led by a stud bullpen, but they had a lot of overachievers and luck factor into their success.

Would be shocked if they win 90 games again next year, although their division is pretty much a giant pile of shit besides Houston. Doubt they have Manaea at all next year either.
The A’s most certainly are not in our tier

The team, in a do or die all of nothing last game, had a fucking bullpen day. And it wasn’t due to overwhelming injuries

Oakland is a meme team

Or... they're a team that's zagging while everyone else zigs. If starting pitching is overvalued, don't pay for it--spend elsewhere.

It's risky, sure. But let's not straight up dismiss creativity. Small markets have to do something to compete in this sport.

I believe more teams are going to start doing that at least occasionally, if not more, because it's a lot easier (and cheaper) to find pitchers who can go once through the lineup than good starting pitchers who can go twice or more through the lineup.

Looks like Machado visiting White Sox.

Rather have Chicago get him than NY to be honest.

Maybe the Indians won't have the Central locked up after all.

I think most of us wanted Brantley back in that lineup, but I guess we have to look elsewhere to try and replace an extremely good hitter.

I think most of us accepted that Brantley would walk.

I don't think any of us saw Houston being the team to land him. It hurts A LOT to see one of your best hitters sign with the team that just swept you out of the postseason.
