2018 Draft Prospects Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Who is comparing Josh Allen and Paxton Lynch? What overlap in skills would lead you to that comparison?

Allen is cut more in the mold of someone like Big Ben......great size and mobility with a big arm.

I don't love Allen but he does have tantalizing measurables.

Wentz didn't exactly overpower his smaller school foes and 24 months later was an MVP candidate.

You have to evaluate his profile and potential and think about what he can be 2-3 years from now.
I'm comparing them. Both are tall guys with decent but not great athleticism. Both have strong arms. Both are seen as pretty long term developmental projects.

The more I watch Darnold, the more I want him. Guy hangs in the pocket as well as any pro-prospect I can recall. And he hangs in the pocket while making multiple progressions. And for all the talk about his mechanics, his release isn't exceptionally long.

I still go back to some of those dimes he dropped against OSU in the face of the best front 4 in CFB. He was making throws 2/3rds of the NFL wouldn't be able to do. I think he's truly special....and I think he wants "it". As in, he will put in the work to be great.

We need to give Dick Hammer's grandson a chance. I think passing on him would be a massive mistake.
I see Darnold as a quarterback who might be a Dan Marino type. He's a slinger and he's not afraid to throw darts into tight places.

Bet he got a shitload of clicks today though.

Dude doesn't even try to hide it anymore. He's reached First Take status. He's absolutely irrelevant.

Kiper does a national radio show (can't remember who it's with), but it's awful.

Not sexy, but speaking of Georgia and their stable of RB's.........someone who I think will be very special at the next level, Isaiah Wilson. He's like the anti-Cameron Irving. And I say that largely because of the downhill blocking scheme UGA uses vs. the very soft, zone blocking Rick Trickett employed at FSU.

I had high hopes for Irving when he was picked, especially because of his versatility, but damn the dude was soft. Wilson brings that same versatility across the line, but he's been a smash-mouth road grader for years. Someone is getting a mid-round steal in him. And he can honestly play any position across the line....he certainly projects best in the interior, but he's the type of guy you just take and figure it out later.

I believe you’re thinking of Isaiah Wynn?

Yeah, he’s a stud. Destined for guard because of size limitations, but my goodness is he nasty.

This interior offensive line class is the best I’ve ever seen.

Quenton Nelson is going to have a bust in Canton one day.

Billy Price is a culture changer, multiple pro bowl talent.

Wynn, James Daniels, Will Hernandez, Mason Cole. All of those guys are certain starters.

Mid round guys like Frank Ragnow, Sean Welsh, Teuhema, Wyatt Teller, Braden Smith.

Just unreal how developed some of these guys look.

I don’t think Allen and Ben are great comparisons. Ben has a significantly larger frame, and has always hung in the pocket, even going back to his days at Miami of Ohio. He’s the guy who was so big, and had such a huge frame, it made him damn near impossible to bring down in 1 in 1 situations.

That isn’t Allen. Allen flees the pocket too fast, locks on his targets far too frequently (whereas Ben can literally get through 4 reads and make up a fifth option that didn’t even exist at start of play....check out his lateral to Leveon Bell last weekend) and Allen just isn’t remotely as accurate as Ben was at Miami of Ohio. Keep in mind, while Ben did probably have the better overall talent at M of O, it wasn’t by a substantial margin. I actually know Ben’s starting center one season from Miami, OH.....and the stories are great.

Inaccurate college QB's never work out. Too many scouts fall in love with big arms. Ryan Leaf is a perfect example. career 54% completion in college vs Peyton 62.5, but over 60% all 4 years.

Accuracy matters. Ask Derek Anderson.

Derek Anderson is still in the league. He's made a lot of cash off that one Browns season.

Ragnow is getting first round chatter now.

I’m not as big on Billy Price as others. He holds up well at point of attack, but the special guys have that ability to get to the next level. I think OSU interior lineman have really benefited from amazing RB’s behind them and a system that excels at downhill running, and then exploits a contained defensive rush.

Surprisingly, Elflein graded pretty average to poor this year.

I love Daniels from Iowa. Think he’s going to be a very good one, and while not as physically strong as Price, has better feet and mobility.

If the Browns have an area of strength right now, it's defensive line interior and offensive line interior.

I was comparing Allen to Paxton Lynch. The other guy was comparing him to Ben. I think my comp is closer.

Well....I don’t like the Lynch comparison much either, although I think Allen suffers the same fate as Lynch.

Paxton Lynch has NFL talent, but he operated a very college friendly offensive system, that did him no favors on his transition to the NFL.

At least Allen has been operating in a pro-style system since arriving on campus. I think it should also be pointed out Wyoming had a very good RB last year too in Brian Hill. He was an NFL draft pick and physical as hell. And Allen still struggles to complete passes at a respectable rate.....it’s just not good.

Another guy I like who will be a late round pick is Tyler Ferguson from Memphis. Everyone is gun-shy because Lynch didn’t pan out. Had Lynch lived up to the billing, Ferguson would be a border line first rounder. Ferguson is more mobile, but also carries more of a gunslinger mentality. I like Ferguson a lot though....especially as a guy projected to go in 7th round.

If Joe Thomas hangs it up, I’d contemplate sliding Bitonio outside to fill and grabbing from a stacked guard glass.

Even Nelson at 4 would be in play for me.
I was thinking about posing this scenario on here a few days ago but didn't want to come off looking like a Chicken Little after my J.T. posts :chuckle:.

The Browns are so young on the offensive line though. If they grab a guy like Brian Allen from Michigan State on day three for a backup role, that's good enough for me. I'd prefer the Browns to find an average veteran tackle to bridge Joe Thomas and push Shon Coleman, then look to draft a stud OT next year. That will give guys like Coleman, Drango, Banner, and Johnson another year to take a step forward and show something. If they go with a high pick, I'd prefer a tackle to a guard. If the interior ain't broke, don't fix it. There's plenty to fix in Barea...

The four guys you’ve mentioned are very bad candidates for LT.

None of them should be expected to fill that role, IMO.

I’m open to other alternatives, but those four guys are bad potential left tackles.
