Hmm. That's horribly ambiguous then. If that's the intention, then the umpire probably missed the call according to the rules.

Always blows my mind how poorly rules can be worded in multi-billion dollar industries like professional sports.

I'm basing it off of the "However" statement that follows it.

Essentially "Interference won't be called if the fielder is obstructed pursuing a ball that over the fence. However, if the fielder is obstructed pursuing a ball that is in the park, then interference will be called"

Nobody is happier about being involved in this than Joe West.

Gotta love how decisive he was from 50+ feet away and inconclusive replays:

"When questioned about this call by a pool reporter who probably won’t regard this exchange as the highlight of his career, West insisted that when Betts “jumped up to reach for the ball, the spectator reached out of the stands and hit him over the playing field and closed his glove.”

As he snapped off mostly terse answers to six follow-up questions, West did not waver. He insisted Betts’ glove had not reached into the stands. He repeated that the fan collided with the glove “over the playing field.” He even tried to claim that “the replay official said I was right,” even though the replay official said no such thing."

So is the rule that fan interference only applies to the field itself? If the play is over the wall, fans can do whatever they want?

I'm genuinely asking because the replay, to me, showed that Mookie was going to catch that ball and it honestly would have been one of the better defensive plays I've ever seen. I was bummed to be robbed of seeing that play.

I liked the call because it was, IMO, the far and away most likely outcome. Not only did the fans go for the ball, his glove was literally closed by a hand. If the rules are explicitly worded against that, however, I can see the frustration.

I would think of the plane of the wall similar to a goal line in football. If the ball goes beyond the plane of the wall, it is fair game and the fans can make contact and even close the glove of the infielder. The ruling was the ball didn't go beyond the plane of the wall and the replay was unable to conclusively overrule that. That is why interference was called.

It's really a tossup to whether the Patriots or Red Sox getting more favorable calls. Them and the Steelers are the 3 most ref helped teams in pro sports.

No, the game is not fixed to help the teams you don’t like.

From a view from above, that Tony Kemp catch in Game 3 looked like it hit wall before landing in his glove. Probably would've resulted in 2 runs for Boston had it been ruled a hit.

It didn't ultimately matter since Boston opened it up in the 8th, but the game was tied at that point.

Uh... did you actually watch that play, or any of the replays? Unquestionably a catch. Not even close to hitting the wall first.

Nah I must have missed them bro.

If you want to say it was a catch, sure I have no problem with you saying that. Saying it was unquestionably a catch and not even close to hitting the wall is objectively just not true.

The ball goes directly into his glove. His glove, with the ball in it, hits the panel. Clear as day.

And if I had a Todd Haley “don’t bro me, please” meme, I’d use it here, lol.

In any case, nothing about that Tony Kemp catch makes Joe West’s call any less shitty.

Next time I'll consult with you before posting a few replays of a play the internet was extremely divided on.

About as far from clear as day as possible, but it's OK if you have a hard time admitting you may have come in extra hot.

Damn, i thought Houston was gonna roll right over these guys. As much as i hate to say it, Boston looks fantastic . . .

Really tough to repeat...Boston has been the most consistent team all year
