2018 NBA Draft - June 21

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Lol... Kyle Anderson? Slow-Mo? No fucking thank you. You totally killed it for me.

Jontay is probably going to grow to 7 feet as well, Autistic Curry doesn't have the same height or build, so I don't see it :/

I didn't mean it as a knock, of course. Kyle Anderson has been fantastic for the Spurs this year. High-IQ player who doesn't always score a lot of points but plays fantastic team defense and can play a little point forward.

Less of an athlete than Diaw, less physical than Draymond, but bigger and more skilled than either, I'd say. His shooting really sets him apart from them and Al Horford at the same age. I'm no expert, but it looks like he has a stroke that could extend out to NBA range fairly easily.

Disagree that he's more skilled than Boris.

I like Porter alot but top 6-7 in this draft is nuts to me.

He can barely jump over a phone book and relies heavily on his size advantage on the defensive end. Sure he has decent size, but by NBA standards he will rarely have an advantage at the next level I don't think in that regard.

He's got some mobility to maybe switch out on the perimeter in late clock situations in time, but that's about it.

His lack of athleticism already hurts him in the paint against college guys. He's only shooting 50.6% from two point range at 6'11".

I don't have a Synergy subscription yet, but the last I saw about three weeks ago Porter was 2 for 17 from NBA 3 point range on the season. He's got solid mechanics, so I'd have solid hopes he'll be able to stretch his range out. Important to note though that the majority of his attempts are pick and pops above the break, and that's a good 3 foot difference between NCAA and NBA lines.

I still think he's worth a shot in the first round, given his awareness on both ends of the floor. His ceiling could be an elite-level glue guy, but that's if everything checks out.

What kills his prospects for me is that his athletic disadvantages are already showing up at the NCAA level quite a bit.

That's what I was getting at with the Kyle Anderson comparison. Sort of like Jontay, Anderson is a pretty underwhelming athlete but still has a big impact defensively thanks to his length, smarts, and timing.

As for whether or not Jontay's more skilled than Boris, again, it's hard to say because we don't have any stats for him when he was the same age Jontay is now. That's the case for almost all players because Jontay skipped a year.

Gary Clark and Cincinnati are crazy impressive. Beating SMU on the road 59-25 right now, middle of the second half. An SMU team that has wins over Arizona and Wichita State.

SMU without Shake Milton right now.

But Cincy is gunna be TOUGH in the tourney.

Updating my rankings after this game.

EDIT: Also, alternate universe where Bamba, Carter Jr, and Cassius Winston all go to Harvard and play 4 years. Does that team win a championship?? :chuckle:

Tier 1: Doncic

Tier 2: Jackson/Young

Tier 3: Porter/Carter/Bagley/Sexton/Ayton/Bamba

Tier 4: Jontay Porter/Mikal Bridges/Miles Bridges/Jevon Carter/Smith

Hot take: post up is "dying" in the modern NBA because not enough players can score *and* pass efficiently out of the post.

Carter Jr can score efficiently and pass efficiently out of the post...

Previous rankings:

Here's an update of my rankings. Jackson slipped past Ayton into 3rd place after a couple big games, and he's on Young's heels. Wendell Carter rises into tier 3, and Bamba slips to tier 4, which I've split into 4a and 4b. Jontay Porter enters tier 4a, and Gilgeous-Alexander enters tier 4b, ahead of Sexton.

There's obviously a lot to talk about here, but instead of going case-by-case I'll just try to respond to your critiques :chuckle:

Tier 1: Doncic

Tier 2: Young/Jackson/Ayton

Tier 3: Porter/Bagley/Carter

Tier 4a: Bamba/Mikal Bridges/Jontay Porter

Tier 4b: Miles Bridges/Bonga/Gilgeous-Alexander/Sexton

EDIT: Bamba, of course, is quickly making me look foolish for dropping him down a tier.

Wait a minute... you just saw how good this team plays surrounding LeBron with tall athletes that can run and defend, and Young is STILL in your top 3?

I'm not considering fit on the Cavs for the purposes of these rankings.

That said, if the draft was today and Doncic/Jackson were off the board, I would at least consider taking Young. Both he and Doncic offer a combination of scoring and playmaking that we haven't seen in a prospect since...CP3, maybe? He's a hell of a prospect.

My God, man.

My God, man.

Not saying he's as good as CP3; I'm saying CP3 is the most recent prospect I can think of who was both a better passer and a better scorer than Young.

CPs comparison to young is ahhh interesting

Before we won the lottery the Wiggins draft we were supposed to be have a pick in the 8-10 range and people were seriously comparing MCdermott to Larry Bird. This comparison is going to age just as well 5 years from now.

It wasn't a comparison, but even if it was, I guarantee it'll age better than the Jimmer Fredette comparisons some people have thrown around...

Young will play in the NBA, but his chances of being as or any where near good as CP3 are not good. I dont even think he is anywhere near Donovan Mitchell as a prospect.
