2018 NBA Draft - June 21

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Several of these rookies could have a Tatum like year IF Bron remains and IF the FO mandates that that pick gets consistent minutes from the beginning of the season. Not starters minutes necessarily. Just consistent role, whether 12, 19, or 25 per night.

Tatum and Mitchell are great, but put either on of them on the Suns, Kings, Hawks, or Magic this season and people would be taking about their future potential and promise only. Again, credit to them and their coaches, because Johnathan Isaac isn’t having that same impact on the the Jazz or Celtics, but Tatum and Mitchell walked into very unique and ideal spots for them.

Mitchell went to a lotto team, IMO and elevated them into the playoffs. Not only that but he did so in a way that not many rookies could do in leading them in scoring while be surrounded by not a lot of great offensive options.

Mitchell would have been great anywhere. I think Tatum probably benefits from being surrounded by several all stars

What do you mean by lotto team? how was utah a lottery team? Do you mean they were destined to be a lottery team after the loss of Hayward?

Tatum is playing hisbest basketball ever since the Kyrie injury, so the only player potentially elevating his play is Horford who is the lone star for the Celtics right now. And I do believe Horford skillsets elevates his teammates.

But Tatum mainly benefits from having Brad Steven's guidance and coaching as well as playing on his system which is very structured, but also allows great freedom to operate without any restrictions. Basically puts him in the best position to attack on every possessions.

Lotto team? Utah won 51 games the previous season. Yes, they lost Hayward, but they still had a positive point differential with him off the court that season.

Joe Ingles took a big step forward, Rubio had a really good season, and Favors stayed healthy.

Mitchell was a bit of a surprise, and had a great season, but the Jazz looked like about a .500 team coming into the season IMO and ended up winning 48. It wasn't a huge upset to get where they were.

Of those likely available here are my choices:

1. Sexton
2. Mikal Bridges
3. Trae Young (last-ditch, only if the others are not available, hope Orlando takes him)

IF they are available, these guys

1. Michael Porter Jr. (over Sexton or Bridges)
2. Mohamed Bamba (not over Sexton, but possibly over Bridges though)

why Sexton? he is a two way guard who can play defense. I'm not interested in a one-trick pony who is compared to high-profile NBA talent (Young), we saw that with Dion Waiters. we won't be lucky to flip him for the 2 Knicks United equivalents. If LeBron's gone, I want a solid young guy that can be added to once the tanks begin.

all I ask of the Cavs don't draft for LeBron, please. that's burned the Cavs completely over the years.
I looked over the post-Kyrie drafts and .... damn.

2013 was a huge L. Cavs could have had Giannis, Oladipo, even Trey Burke, lots of people who weren't picked in the top 3 came out great.
but no, they had to stick with Dion (who could have/should have been Drummond)

Wiggins and Bennett were trade bait.

so imagine same draft position and it's Kyrie, Klay, Giannis, Drummond out of the first round. AND then LeBron comes back.

No Warriors because no Klay.

That's how the curse has evolved.

Eh, I think that's a generous way to look at it. Does this team make it to .500 without Mitchell? I doubt it, not in the West. They have no scoring, Ingles is not going to be a legit first option.

Gobert isn't a scorer, neither is Favors. Rodney Hood? Ricky Rubio?

That team wouldnt be that good without Mitchell. Definitely not in the playoffs in the West. JMO

I'm just saying, painting it as Mitchell carrying a lotto team to the playoffs is a bit outlandish. He gave them probably 5-6 extra wins this year.

In some cases the whole really is more than the sum of its parts, and I think this is one of those cases. Mitchell landed in a spot with great complimentary players on both ends of the floor, and that certainly played a big role in his success. So it's a matter of opinion whether you give Mitchell full credit for that success, split the credit between him and the supporting cast that made it possible, or perhaps even reject the idea of trying to divvy up a team's success into slices for each player.

Measurements that stuck out to me.

Carsen Edwards 6'6.25" wingspan
Donte Divincenzo 6'6" wingspan (longer than prev listed)
Keita Bates-Diop 6'8.5" (prev listed at 6'7")
Kenrich Williams wingspan < height
Landry Shamet 6'6.75" wingspan, shorter than expected
Melvin Frazier 7'1.75" wingspan
Mo Bamba 9'7.5" standing reach
Sagaba Konate 7'0" wingspan, was some worry was less
Trae Young 6'1.75", little smaller than expected
Zhaire Smith only 6'4" in shoes

Also Jaren Jackson is a monster. 6'11.25", 7'5.25" wingspan, 9'2" reach. Biggest hands at the combine.

Wendell Carter 7'11" standing reach is a serious red flag

It's a typo. It lists Jevon Carter at 9'1" haha.

Yeah, looking at their measured weights, I think those two got some of their measurements swapped.

If that's the case, 9'1" standing reach for Carter is really solid. Prototypical center size.

I don't follow this very closely, but I like to look over the measurements. Why none for Bagley and Mikhail Bridges? Did they not show up?

BTW: As an admitted Ohio State fan I think Bates-Diop is going to be a useful player at the next level and might develop into more than that. Good pick from about 20 on IMO.
