2018 Nets draft pick tracking thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Well I fell into a rabbit hole after listening to the idiots on 92.3 and looked into possible DeMarcus Cousins trades. Let me preface this by saying I'm not a fan of trading for Cousins right now.

Pretty much the basis of any deal for Cousins would probably consist of:

Iman Shumpert $10,337,079
Channing Frye $7,420,912
Draft Pick(s)

For

Demarcus Cousins $18,063,850

Cavs would actually save $305,859 in salaries along with $1,299,901 in taxes by my calculations, or about $1.6 million total. The repeater taxes are no joke.

I was really curious about possibly adding in Etwaun Moore into the deal somehow. He's due about $8.5 million a year for the next 3 seasons. You can get there by adding in Cedi Osman and Ante Zizic into the deal. That is the only realistic scenario I would see. However, this would lead to an increase in salary of $4,462,826 for this season. But that's not all. That increase would set the Cavs into the next tier of the repeater tax, and would cost them an additional $30,126,839 in taxes alone. That's insanity. Long story short, the Cavs would not be getting Etwaun Moore in any deal with the Pelicans with Cousins. Too bad, I think he'd fit well here.

The other aspect of the deal is the draft picks. Obviously, the Brooklyn pick would have to be involved. However, if I'm the Cavs, I'm doing the absolute best I can to negotiate a top 3 protection, or at least a top 1 protection (shoutout to Neil Olshey, some of you will get this reference). These are the picks that the Cavs have through 2020:

2018 BKN 1st
2018 CLE 1st
2019 CLE 1st (if 11-30)
2020 Miami 2nd

Unfortunately not a ton to work with. The Stepian Rule also throws a wrench into the deal. If we do trade for Cousins, its extremely likely the Cavs will retain that 2019 pick. Therefore I think it should be included. The Stepian Rule then prevents the 2018 Cavs pick from being included. NO's draft picks are far simpler. They have no picks incoming, and their 2018 second rounder outgoing. I think the Cavs would like at least a 2nd back with the picks they're giving up. So in total, this to me is the most realistic trade for the Cavs/Pels with Cousins that I would consider as Cavs:

Cavs receive:
Demarcus Cousins $18,063,850
NOP 2020 2nd Round pick

Pelicans receive:
Iman Shumpert $10,337,079
Channing Frye $7,420,912
2018 BKN 1st Round Pick*
2019 CLE 1st Round Pick (if 11-30)

* Top 1 protected: if the pick falls as #1 pick, NOP receives CLE 2021 1st round pick unprotected and 2020 MIA 2nd round pick

In total, the Cavs would again save about $1.6 million, though would likely fill the Now opened roster spot and the additional tax.

The Cavs draft pick situation isn't ideal, but if the BKN pick is conveyed, this would leave the Cavs with their own 2018 pick, Miami's 2020 pick, and New Orleans 2020 pick. That's just enough for me even if Lebron were to leave. They have enough tradeable players to replenish their draft picks if needed in my opinion (If Dan can swallow his pride - doubtful).

So whether you are for or against trading the pick and/or trading for Cousins, this is how I think it would breakdown. Certainly there's plenty of room for change that we can't predict, especially with Dell Demps. For example, NOP may want Zizic back for that 2nd rounder or something.

Was already looking at these #s and possibilities and figured it was worth posting for anyone else who was curious. Interested to see what everyone's thoughts are on the above scenario

Brooklyn coming up on a nasty stretch, honestly can't see them winning a game for a while. Not a huge fan of the 6th or 7th pick, to be honest, so hopefully they start losing.

I think a DeAndre Jordan trade is starting to make a lot more sense than a Cousins trade.

NOP looks like a vaguely function team that will be in contention for the playoffs. That is important for them (in terms of keeping Davis happy). They will try to resign Cousins after the season.

Clippers look like a train wreck - but this is the first year of having Griffin under contract for 5 years. They have some time to rebuild now.

DeAndre Jordan is also signed through next year as well.

Might try to negotiate some protection on the Brooklyn pick here -- also could add in protections that occur via pick swaps, since the Clippers pick is bound to be fairly good as well.

E.g. Nets pick is >5th, LAC gets the Pick
Nets pick is 1-5, LAC gets the pick, and gets the Cavs 2018 1st round pick. Cleveland gets LACs 1st round pick.

Or something.

Can’t do it

Career 43% FT shooter. Kerr would unzip his dick every time Jordan is on the floor When we go on a run. Literally .86 points per possession by just spamming the foul button would cripple our offense. And we aren’t relying on our defense anytime soon...

Kerr would force Jordan off the court whenever he saw fit. DeAndre Jordan just can’t be a part of a championship team as a main cog in today’s hyper efficient NBA without major improvement to his free throws which is unlikely

It's not that bad... 0.585 this year, 0.482 last year. Similar numbers to TT the last two years.

Plus, you get more than the PPP when you hack-a-Shaq. The Warriors kill the Cavs in transition, but there is no transition game after you foul. On top of that, it's a lot of extra rest for LBJ, who can easily play 45-48 minutes if they are hacking Jordan 10x a game.

Also, Jordan is mobile enough that I just don't see how you can go small-ball against him. He's not quite TT on the outside, but he's good enough and a much better rim protector.

If he can keep up his 58.5 i agree he’s fine. I just doubt that happens. He’s only shot 41 free throws this year

That's obviously fine -- I think it would be fine even if he was at 50%, I agree that 43% is likely a problem.

I also just realized that he has a Player Option for next year, which probably makes this worth less (especially since we'd probably need to give up TT to make salaries match).

Probably not worth the Brooklyn pick (though maybe worth a pick swap).

Cavs would pretty much be forced into giving up Cedi Osman with Shumpert/Frye to get DeAndre Jordan. Otherwise, they'll be set into the next tier of repeater tax, and owe tons more in taxes.

Only way around it is trading an additional key piece instead such as Crowder, JR, or Tristan. Not going to happen.

Unless the cavs win big in the lottery, this pick most likely will be around 10 or so. The Nets have a good ball club compared to the rest of the teams at the bottom. Their point differential is only -2points, which is pretty good considering their record. For the most part they play hard and have beaten some good teams already(wizards twice, cavs, wolves, okc, portland, miami). once they get russell back, they will be even better. It sucks for the cavs, but that is the reality of the situation.

A lot of teams that were supposed to be awful have had really good stretches this season. Case in point, the Suns are blowing out the Thunder at the moment. With the bottom several teams all separated by just a few wins, it's too soon to say which team will finish where.

Nets hobble into the All Star break with their 7 straight loss coming at the hands of the Pacers.

The Nets play so damn hard though. It was anyone's game with 2 minutes left before the Pacers got to the free throw line a couple times and iced it.

Depending on when Rondae Hollis Jefferson and Caris LeVert come back, we can expect some upset wins from them. Thankfully they have a relatively tough schedule remaining compared to the other shit teams.

They come out of the All Star break @ Charlotte, vs Chicago, @ Cleveland, @ Sacramento. HUGE stretch there with the 6 teams above them in the lottery standings with only 1 less win currently.

Relax and enjoy the All Star break, fellas...the tank gets ratcheted to another gear when we come back.

Realistically, as long as we pick top 7, I'll be happy. I have 7 players I love in the draft and after that, it's meh.

Bulls and Kings both blew their upsets in the final minute...both would have been great wins for the beer pick.

At least the Nets did their job and looked like poop doing so. Kings and Bulls on their upcoming schedule both coming off of masterful tank nights. Big week.
