2018 Postseason Roster

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Yandy not making the team would be a crime against nature.

I feel if we go with 14 players and everyone is back to being healthy, he will at least get one of the bench spots/DH role. His bat is way too strong not to make the playoff roster.

I also think Guyer may be the odd man out especially if we keep Allen on the roster.

Here’s my prediction for the 25-man playoff roster (assuming everyone who can reasonably be healthy at that time does get healthy.)

Playoff roster prediction:
C Gomes
1B Alonso
2B Ramirez
3B Donaldson
SS Lindor
LF Brantley
CF Kipnis
RF Cabrera
DH Encarnacion

C: Perez
IF: Gonzalez
IF: Diaz
OF: Guyer
OF: Davis

Pitchers (11)
Kluber
Bauer
Carrasco
Clevinger

Bieber
Ramirez
(L) Perez
Cimber
(L) Hand
(L) Miller
Allen

I think Tito ends up going with the veteran, Davis, over Greg Allen. I think the last position is between Allen and Yandy Diaz.

@CBBI basically nailed this a while back. I think Tomlin, Plutko, Olson and Otero get left off. I guess if Cimber continues to struggle, you could see Otero take that spot.

Let me know if I’m forgetting someone or if you disagree.

EDIT: this is what I expect from Tito, not sure I necessarily agree. Also, maybe Otero could take Neil Ramirez’s spot instead of Cimber’s. I don’t have a great read on that.

New guess:

POSITION (14)

C - GOMES, PEREZ
1B - ENCARNACION, ALONSO
2B - RAMIREZ, GONZALEZ
SS - LINDOR
3B - DONALDSON, DIAZ
OF - BRANTLEY, KIPNIS, DAVIS, CABRERA, GUYER

PITCHERS (11)

SP - KLUBER, BAUER, CARRASCO, CLEVINGER,
RP - HAND, MILLER, ALLEN, CIMBER, PEREZ, OLSON, BIEBER

I agree with all of those choices except I think they will ultimately go with Allen over Davis despite Tito's affinity for veterans and Otero over Olson. Otero has been atrocious, but Olson hasn't had much body of work with the club this season which will play into the decision.

Here are some of my ramblings about Yandy Diaz, Erik Gonzalez, and the postseason roster..

-The argument for Erik Gonzalez over Yandy: Gonzalez is a versatile infield glove and plus base runner. He isn't going to pinch hit for anyone in the infield, but he could be used to run for EE, Yonder, or Donaldson and potentially be used as a late inning defensive replacement for Donaldson depending on where JD is at and if the Indians are leading the game.

-At this point the only regular role for Yandy is starting DH vs. LHP in place of Alonso, which Tito has been doing recently. Being that he hasn't gotten a single start at 1B (3 total innings in 3 appearances) or anywhere else, I don't think the Indians trust him much there or really anywhere else defensively. Especially since it is Edwin who is getting the nod at 1B instead.

-Going off the above point, Houston's only LHP are Dallas Keuchel and Tony Sipp. Yandy's bat in the starting lineup would be much more valuable in an ALCS series vs. Boston or New York who both have 2 LHP in their rotation.

-Assuming the starting OF vs. RHP is Brantley-Kip-Melky: Yandy could pinch hit for Kipnis or Melky and then the Indians could use Allen/Rajai to pinch run and then move them to the OF (which you'd ideally want to do with Kip and Melky late in the game).

Ultimately, IMO, I think the Indians would get more use utilizing the speed and defense of both Allen and Rajai than they would out of Erik Gonzalez. I don't think this happens though, the Indians need to protect themselves from an injury and carrying 6 OFs is pretty excessive. It will be interesting to see how Tito uses Yandy going forward this month. I feel like Gonzalez could edge him out for a spot.

This would be my 25.

1. Gomes
2. R. Perez
3. EE
4. Alonso
5. Diaz
6. Jose
7. Lindor
8. Donaldson
9. Brantley
10. Allen
11. Davis
12. Kipnis
13. Guyer
14. Cabrera
15. Kluber
16. Bauer
17. Carrasco
18. Clevinger
19. Hand
20. Allen
21. Miller
22. O. Perez
23. Bieber
24. Cimber
25. Otero

I get the injury coverage that is needed too, but unless both of Jose/Lindor go down (which means we're screwed anyways), we should have pretty solid coverage even if we choose not to carry Erik Gonzalez*.
*all of this is assuming that Donaldson is healthy and can play the field

3B - Donaldson/Ramirez/Diaz
SS - Lindor/Ramirez
2B - Ramirez/Kipnis
1B - Encarnacion/Alonso/Diaz/Gomes

Is Jose playing shortstop if Lindor goes down ideal? No, but he is still capable enough to man the position if he absolutely has to. He's got a career .970 Fld% at SS over 913 innings (compared to .972 at 3B over 2881 innings and .982 at 2B over 964 innings).

Again, if we walk into the postseason with Donaldson healthy and able to play third base and plan on starting an infield of Donaldson, Lindor, Ramirez, and EE/Alonso, we've got enough positional coverage even without Erik Gonzalez to be alright if somebody goes down, at least in my opinion. If Lindor or Donaldson go down, move Jose to their spot and Kipnis goes back to second. Jose goes down, bring Kipnis back to second.

I like Gonzalez, but my thinking as of now is that we can survive without him.

People forget Gomes played 3rd base as well, but its been awhile so they probably dont want to put him there. Donaldson used to catch, so he could be an emergency that way. Diaz was signed as a 2B when he defected from Cuba.

Ramirez actually is a solid SS so its not like we would be putting out a random guy out there to play. If we didn't have Lindor, Ramirez would have been our SS, so its not like he wouldn't be able to play there everyday if need be. Ramirez is also a decent OF as well, so its not like he couldn't play out there if needed.

The thing is a few years ago we went with a light hitting utility guy as the last man on the bench and that ended up hurting us in hindsight. If its between Diaz and Gonzalez, we have to go Diaz. I mean shoot, I know most of the guys would play out of position in the playoffs if it meant wins so it's not like any of them are afraid to move around.

In past years, we went with a utility guy because we didn't have the flexibility to fill our holes if someone went down.

This year, we have the flexibility to do so. Jose, Donaldson, Yandy can all play third. Frankie and Jose can both play SS. Jose and Kip can play second. There just won't be a need to have EGon on this roster.

C: Gomes
1B: Yonder
2B: Jose
3B: Donaldson
SS: Lindor
LF: Brantley
CF: Kipnis
RF: Melky
DH: Edwin

If that's our starting 9 (Big assumption that Donaldson is both healthy enough to play, AND healthy enough to start at 3B) then the only real weaknesses, either offensively or defensively, are Melky and Kipnis in the OF.

Bench: Perez, Guyer, Allen, Diaz

Then I think it's Raj and Gonzalez--or carrying 12 arms.

SP: Kluber, Cookie, Bauer, Clevinger
RP: Bieber, Hand, Miller, Allen, Perez

With Plutko/Cimber/Olson/Otero/Ramirez, I think Cimber and Otero make it on the team. Olson probably is a better pitcher than Otero, but we have 3 lefties already.

Would there be value to having Raj on the team, or another arm? I think that with the defensive liabilities of Melky and Kip (heck, even Brantley isn't a good defensive OF) combined with the pinch running that Raj brings, he makes the 25th spot, giving us only 7 bullpen arms.
