2018 Trade Deadline

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I'd take him for cheap, and he's better than what Kipnis has shown this year, but he's really not that good either.

Average bat, good glove.

Even though it's outdated, I do still value a player with a high batting average, even though he lacks power and hardly walks. And like you mentioned, he is pretty good defensively.

I feel like the other guys that will be available are Scooter Gennett, Starlin Castro, Jed Lowrie, and Asdrubal Cabrera. I'd probably rank DJ #3 behind Gennett and Lowrie

You have to account for the Colorado factor as well

He's a career .270/.319/.364 slash line away from Coors with an OPS+ of 80, that's putrid. I'd rank him last of that group, but that could change depending on price tags.

Since 2015 it's .291 / .349 / .401 and he's actually been quite better on the road this season.

Regardless, every time Kipnis strings together a few solid games, a chain of bad games follow. I like the guy and have made a lot of excuses for him, most of which I felt justified making, but the reality is he's been one of the worst 2B in baseball this year and hasn't been particularly effective since the World Series. Tito has been sitting him more recently (4 starts in the last 8 games) and Erik Gonzalez hasn't done much with the opportunity.

I said he was an average hitter, those numbers back that up. I'd rate him evenly with Starlin Castro.

Kelvy Herrera traded to the Nationals for the following:

OF Blake Perkins (MLB.com #11, Fangraphs #7)
3B Kelvin Gutierrez (MLB.com #10, Fangraphs #10)
RHP Yohanse Morel (MLB.com Not rated, Fangraphs Not rated)

Those were their ranks within the Nationals, Baseball America didn't have any of them in their preseason top 10.

Herrera was probably the top reliever on the open market, definitely sets the market for rental relievers.

4. Indians
They certainly wouldn’t mind adding first baseman Yonder Alonso’s brother-in-law to the mix, and probably could use another threat to go with Francisco Lindor and Jose Ramirez. J-Ram could switch to second base, where Jason Kipnis hasn’t been himself.

Odds: 10-1

Other teams listed, in order and with Heyman's odds:

1. Phillies, 3-1
2. Cardinals, 6-1
3. Diamondbacks, 7-1
4. See above
5. Dodgers, 12-1
6. Cubs, 15-1
7. Padres, 18-1
8. Braves, 20-1
9. Red Sox, 25-1
10. Brewers, 30-1

If we’re going to pay a lot to win the derby, do they have a reliever worth getting added into the deal?

I look at stuff like this for quick references just to see what some writers think.

Do you guys think we will trade for a veteran rental starter? Someone like J.A. Happ seems like a likely candidate to me if we go that route. Anyone else come to mind?

Part of me wants to just go and get Hand from the Padres to help finish the bullpen, but what lefties out there like maybe a Diekman from the Rangers would be worth going to get you think?

Excerpt from Ken Rosenthal's latest article:

*Think batting average matters? The Reds are drawing a surprising amount of trade interest in left fielder Adam Duvall, who is batting .203, albeit with a .702 OPS.

Duvall is a two-time 30-homer man, a two-time Gold Glove finalist and one of the game’s unluckiest hitters this season, according to several advanced metrics. He also is earning just $645,000, with three more years of control after this one. The Reds probably would not get a ton in return for Duvall, but he is expendable due to the presences of two other corner outfielders, Scott Schebler and Jesse Winker.

Duvall isn't a high avg or high obp guy, but he did have 30 HRs in 2016 and 2017, has 3 years of arbitration, and is good defensively (not so much in 2017)

Career splits vs. LHP (385 ABs): .248 / .330 / .486

If the cost isn't much like Rosenthal suggested, he could be a pretty valuable platoon partner to Chisenhall

Would he really upgrade our team though?

Would he really upgrade our team though?

Not considerably, but we have not gotten much production out of Guyer since the start of 2017. Chisenhall has frequented the DL and we risk losing Brantley in the offseason. He’s nothing to write home about, but could be a solid platoon OF this season with an opportunity for his role to expand in the future
