2019 Around the MLB

Do Not Sell My Personal Information

Only Yandy Diaz being traded hurts my soul, and that's because i really thought he can contribute on a team for 150+ games. He's a factor right now. Watched the kid grow through the system, that's why baseball sucks sometimes. Wrong moves are made. Fans love their team's, and follow players before the MLB call-up. Then they're moved.

This was somewhat expected.

Heard the Indians may have some interest here.

If he is looking good, I wouldn’t mind having him here, especially with Clev, Plutko and McKenzie all on the DL. Jefry is a bit unproven for my liking this season. Also he is a lefty, and even for the end of the season he could be a long relief guy as well out of the pen. Just my opinion but who knows if he wants to come out of the pen once Clev is heathy.

I thought the same, but then I saw his previous terms with the Yankees. $3m guarantee, once called up, + $300k per start. If his price is anywhere near that, hard to see the Indians being competitive.

Yandy Diaz actually hit another HR, putting him up to 5 this season, he had 26 since 2014 in the minor! His ratio of fly ball to ground ball is up this season as well. I don't think he is a true power threat, but he is a heck of a hitter.

Strangely enough, Diaz is actually hitting even more ground balls this year than last while making weaker contact.

Somehow that has translated to a 31.3% HR/FB ratio compared to 4.8% last year. Biggest difference is that he's pulling the ball much more.

The HR/FB ratio is most likely unsustainable, but he should maintain a passable amount of power if he continues to pull the ball at the rate he has.

Willians "La Tortuga" Astudillo, Twins super utility man:

145 plate appearances
5 HR
4 K
3 BB

2265 minor league at bats and only struck out 81 total times. Never more than 20 times in a season

Pretty remarkable in today's game

Our old friend Cody Allen got demoted in the Angels bullpen. No more closer job for him.

Angels Place Cody Allen On 10-Day IL
By Jeff Todd | April 26, 2019 at 4:56pm CDT

The Angels have placed reliever Cody Allen on the 10-day injured list, Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register was among those to cover on Twitter. He’s said to be dealing with a lumbar spine strain, though details remain scant.

It’s one of several Halos pitching moves. Matt Ramsey was sent down on optional assignment, leaving two openings to accommodate the return of starter Tyler Skaggs and activation of Luke Bard.

Allen’s health trouble comes amidst an exceedingly rough stretch on the mound. He has issued ten walks and three home runs in nine innings thus far. In light of those figures, his 6.00 ERA actually represents a merciful series of outcomes to date.

The risks were well known to the Halos when they signed Allen to a $8.5MM contract over the winter. Long a quality closer for the Indians, Allen exhibited newfound walk and long ball issues in his final season of arbitration eligibility.

Allen will take a step back and try to sort things out. His average fastball velocity is down to 93.1 mph thus far, the fifth-straight season of year-over-year decline. He has responded by going to his curve more than ever before (48.0%), but is out of the zone more than ever before (34.9% zone%) and generating only a 10.1% swinging-strike rate (his lowest level since his debut campaign).

The Chris Archer trade has the potential to go down as one of the worst mlb trades of all time

I know the pirates are hapless, but I love seeing that city fail. That trade was horrible at the time, but with how Glasnow and Meadows are playing, paired with how mediocre Archer has been in an idiotic ‘win now’ move that was obviously ill advised for a team that was way overachieving right at the deadline.

The pirates are the team that Pittsburgh deserves

Pretty crazy how guys just lose it.

Seems to be a common trend among relievers. One day you’re among the best in the league at your position, and then you instantly just fall off a cliff.

I’m sure the heavy workloads guys like Allen and Miller had when they were here probably didn’t help, either. I seem to remember multiple instances of those two pitching multiple innings in games, especially during the postseason when you shorten your rotation.
