2019 Browns Head Coach Candidates

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
or the NFL will change the way they play. At some point a team is just going to completely adopt a college style offense. We ahve certainly see teams start to incorporate it, but eventually one team is just going to take the plunge.

The only thing that will cause the NFL to change it's offensive schemes would have to be rule changes that further penalize a defender from being aggressive or widening of the hashmarks.

College offenses have been lauded in this thread in particular as being some kind of revolution. You know what causes the offense to look so much more diverse? They identify the defenders who have a future in playing professionally and keep the offense away from those guys as much as possible. They attack the defenders on the field who are lucky to have a scholarship and have a future selling Allstate Insurance. In the pros, the weak link of a defense just isn't that weak. Add in the hashmarks being more than twice as wide in the college game, and it is just harder to take advantage of a defensive weak point.

I personally believe high school and college will eventually shrink the hashmarks to be more like the pro game. Wide hashmarks lead to more wide open offense, but also allows defenders and ball carriers to get more momentum during a collision. The safer route to go is smaller fields, and football as a whole needs to be safer.

Again, day two of me wondering why certain posters don't think a professional OC doesn't try all of these college sets on a weekly basis. They do... there are just reasons everything that translates in the college game doesn't translate perfectly to the NFL.

You've already seen teams move away from that shit. The QBs get killed for little gain, because defenses have already clamped down on a lot of the QB run game. And if you want to keep them healthy, you have to keep them in the pocket, which means they have to function as a passer; throw on time, throw accurately, read the coverage.
not quite what i meant. I didnt mean scrambling QBs. i meant more motion, more misdirection, less QBs calling audibles at the line, more shot gun, etc.

Its been harped on over and over that Mayfield, Jackson, etc dont run pro-style offenses, dont take snaps under center, etc. But the truth of the matter most snaps in the NFL now are from the shot-gun (68% in 2016 vs 19% in 2006), and i wouldnt be surprised if NFL teams try and go away from the QB making the call to audible.

Eventually NFL teams are going to decide its not worth trying ot change the best college quarterbacks and instead just adopt what those Quarterbacks do in college (to the best of their ability). Obviously there are some things that make it difficult, but its a damn crapshoot at this point to find a college QB that can make the jump successfully

What college quarterbacks do well is run. Yeah, there are air raid systems with the field spread for throwing it, but the NFL has stolen what it could from that for 30 years now. The field is smaller in the NFL, not just because of the hashmarks, but also because everyone is fast, everyone is coached up, everyone is talented. There's only so much college stuff that will work against professionals, and NFL coordinators already know about it.

"He's a young man with a bright future who understands the game, its fundamentals and the players."

-Hue on inevitably hiring an 8th grader as offensive quality control coach whose favorite sport is soccer

"He said he loved football! How was I supposed to know that means soccer where his family comes from? Clearly the kid should have been more honest with me."

-Hue when inevitably throwing the 8th grader under the bus when things don't work out.

Not about Browns coaches, but shout the fuck out to Walsh Jesuit High School and OSU alum Mike Vrabel for securing the Tennessee Titans head coaching job. I always felt he represented Northeast Ohio Football well in his career, even when he was a goddamn Steeler.

It's a shame a young, rising local like him was available...and we kept Hue Jackson

His defense was terrible last year. And it shouldn’t matter at all where he’s from. This hire was a large stretch.
Houston's defense was terrible, yes. They also had some key injuries and had no offense once Watson went down.

The guy has flown up the ranks the last few years and had interviews lined up for pretty much all the vacant HC positions.

I think you're starting to see teams are tired of the retreads and want to give someone new a chance.

So, the Rams went 11-5. Nick Foles & Case Keenum both just started in the NFC Championship.

Haslam has got to be drooling about the prospect of getting Jeff Fisher. :chuckle:
