2019 Browns Off Season/Roster Discussion

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
RB's tend to get injured. Ideally, some team's need to replace production in the backfield will roughly coincide with Hunt come off his suspension. If that happens, then someone is going to want Duke and will trade us something good for him. That may be the time to maximize Duke's value without leaving us vulnerable if Chubb gets hurt.

I just don't see the value in someone as talented as Duke being the third RB by the end of the season.
I agree. I see no benefit to dealing him now whatsoever unless he’s demanding a trade and causing issues with the team.

Something tells me that’s not how Duke rolls.

If we find out that Hunt is only suspended 6 games and another team loses a back in week 4, sure... that might be the time to trade him if he doesn’t have much of a role in our offense.

What my understanding is he has 1 year of Accrued Seasons. That means we picked up his rookie contract and control his rights until that contract is up. Please confirm Lee.
He does become a RFA because of his accrued seasons, but I don't think we "picked up" his rookie contact. We signed him to whatever we wanted. At least, that's my understanding.

The Cleveland Browns signed running back Kareem Hunt to a one year deal worth more than $1 million not factoring in the suspension according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. It was worth more than the veteran minimum. The team would have control of him beyond the current season, however.

Hunt has accrued two seasons in the NFL. It takes four seasons to become an unrestricted free agent, which means that Hunt would be a restricted free agent after the season. Under those guidelines, Cleveland now controls him for at least two seasons. After those two seasons, the Browns could either sign him or allow him to walk in free agency. If all goes as planned, and Hunt rejuvenates his career, the Browns would likely be able to recoup some draft assets in the form of a compensatory selection.

I think it all depends on the offer. And the risk in waiting to deal him is maybe that injury situation doesn't emerge, and his trade value actually drops during the season. My guess is that that's the exact type of research -- how often such trades happen, etc., -- at which DePodesta excels.

I just think Duke is too good a player to keep on the bench, on which he inevitably is going to be spending more and more of his time if he stays on this team.

According to Over The Cap, he has a base contract of 645k, workout bonus of 55k and per game roster bonuses of 400k for 1.1 million total.
As of 2020, he becomes an ERFA

If it opens up the opportunity to trade back into the first round without giving away picks for next year I would strongly consider it. We still need a LB and there aren't a lot of good ones in FA it seems. On top of that, the issues at safety can be easily addressed through the draft as well between one of Adderly, CGJ or Thompson with the second round pick.

Like, the ideal scenario for me is is spending a couple of 3rd's to get back in the first round, snag up Bush, and then pick up whoever is left between CGJ, Adderley or Thompson. top it off by running out the back door cackling like a maniac.

You think a couple of thirds is getting you into the first?

I don’t think so.

Plenty of good picks, I hope they’ll stick right where they’re at and try to acquire more picks in the 3rd.

Money rounds.

How does anyone feel about trading the remainder of our picks for a stud CB?

I think the browns shopping ogbah and duke isn’t about those guys being bad players, but more about Dorsey being willing to plug areas of need by giving up areas of strength.

I’m sure in a perfect world he would keep those guys and would have kept zeitler, but when he has the opportunity to upgrade his weak spots he seems very willing to use his areas of strength to his advantage knowing that he has good scouts and lots picks to grab young depth to replace what he’s traded.

Nah, we already have a stud CB in Denzel Ward. Can snag another decent CB in FA to pair with Mitchell and Carrie. I want to keep 7-9 picks this year and every year to continue to build from within.

The main Reason i want to move up is to get an impact LB, and there aren’t gonna be any left after the first round. I don’t know what the going rate for a mod to late first round Pick is, but if it’s a lot more than 2 3rd round picks I get why there’s some trepedation to be had with that idea.

Then again, free agency isn’t over yet and there’s still a Month before the draft so there’s still a lot that could change.

Browns had to have known already, thus the reason they started shopping Duke. Hopefully he gets time served for missing the rest of last season, but I doubt it.
