2019 Browns Off Season/Roster Discussion

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
That seems like a lot. I was thinking his deal would be closer to 4 million over 2 years.
I mean, it guarantees that he’s going to be on the roster this season, which we knew that anyway.

He’s not a guy who didn’t have suitors.

I had anticipated 2/$8 million in my head, so this seems about right for an NFL veteran with options.

Soar's Roster Analysis:
Offense:

QB: Mayfield/Stanton/Gilbert

Could be the 3 guys we keep on the roster. I think we likely draft/sign a UDFA to compete in camp.

RB: Chubb/Hunt/Johnson/Hilliard/Mays.

FB: Charles

Hunt is suspended for 8 games. Johnson wants out. I imagine we flip him on draft day. Late round flier type likely added to camp competition but I think Dorsey really likes Hilliard, and he's probably enough for 8 games.

TE: Njoku/Harris/DeValve

Dorsey hasn't been shy about getting rid of old regime players. I expect a solid mid round pick to be spent on TE with DeValve being shown the door.

WR: Beckham/Landry/Callaway/Higgins/Ratley/Willies/Strong/Sheehy

I could see the Browns adding another mid-round pick type here for competition but the top 4 looks great. Let Ratley, Willies, Strong etc compete for a spot or two.

OL: Robinson/Bitonio/Tretter/Corbett/Hubbard/Lamm/Kush/Witzmann/Harrison

I think if the right guy falls in the second round, taking a strong developmental LT to replace Robinson is a good move. I like the depth we added up front in Lamm, Kush, and Witzmann.

Overall, I don't expect many high picks on offense. Odell was basically our first rounder. If the right OT falls to 49 or 80, I could see that being the pick. TE could be a darkhorse as well.

Can he catch the ball and run routes?

He wont make it as a wr, to make the roster he has play gunner and on all special teams.

He is beyond a long shot.

played 2 years at a junior college, never played at the next level, was eligable for the draft last year, hasnt played since 2016.

Maybe we get lucky like Andrew Hawkins at Cincy, but i highly doubt it

Got maybe given the chance he can make the impact, but if he’s super strong on special teams and maybe certain offensive plays (looks like when he’s got the ball in his hands he can make plays) then it’s worth the look. Maybe he can be like a Cribbs in a sense.

Soar's Roster Analysis
Defense:

DE:
Garrett/Vernon/Thomas/Smith/Zettel

Garrett and Vernon look like a great duo on paper. I question Chad Thomas and his commitment to football so I'd prefer to add some pass rush to this group. Smith is a solid rotational guy and Zettel looked like he was playing in cement shoes last year. We traded Ogbah so adding some extra oompf is likely wise.

DT: Ogunjobi/Richardson/Davis/Coley/Price

We essentially replace Coley with Richardson and keep some depth. If the right guy falls to us in the draft I expect us to pounce. Such a pick would make our defensive line an absolute nightmare.

LB: Schobert/Avery/Kirksey/Armstrong/Taylor/Hines

This is probably one of the weakest positions on the team, which is more of a testament to the collections of talent we have elsewhere on the roster. Schobert is solid and consistent. Avery was a breakout surprise last year. Kirksey is as good of an off the field guy as you could want but I have concerns about his injuries lately. Taylor looks like a solid special teamer who can fill in but adding a solid linebacker to this group is likely a priority going into the draft.

CB: Ward/Mitchell/Carrie/Gaines/Burris

Mitchell far exceeded expectations last year but not sure that can be counted on again. CBs feel like bullpen arms as I've mentioned and seem hard to predict year to year. I'd be surprised if we didn't add a veteran cut/rookies to this mix.

S: Randall/Burnett/Murray/Whitehead

Peppers will be a big loss but Dorsey made some solid depth moves in getting Burnett and Murray. Randall had an excellent 2018. What looked like an obvious pick at 49 position wise, we look fairly ok at the position.

Overall, I think defense is a bigger need than offense right now. While there are certainly some great pieces to our defense like Garrett, Ogunjobi, Schobert, Ward, and Randall, we lack depth, especially at CB and LB.

All of the highlights we saw are against other junior college teams, freshman and sophomores not good enough to make a bad division one team. Take with an extreme grain of salt.
