2019 Buckeyes Football

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Let me start this by saying, I don't care who ends up winning the starting job, I just want the best QB. Those who are saying it's basically Fields job now and we will be better off in the long run with him, just should think about the history of QBs at Ohio State since Troy Smith and their star rating.

Justin Zwick 5 stars
Troy Smith 4 star
Todd Boeckman (I can't even find a star rating for him)
Joe Bauserman (same as above)
Terrelle Pryor 5 star
Braxton Miller 5 star
Kenny Guiton 3 star
JT Barrett 4 star
Cardale Jones 3 star
Joe Burrow 4 star
Dwayne Haskins 4 star

None of the 5 stars took us to the playoffs or a national championship. Troy, Boeckman, and Cardale took us to a national Championship. We won it with a 3 star QB with Cardale.
Nobody is arguing who is better. Only time will tell. They're telling you Fields wouldn't have came here without being assured the job and Tate wouldn't be leaving without being assured the backup spot.

I agree with you, but that also makes it sounds like the competition for the starting spot wasn't a level playing field, and that is a dis-service to Tate (and the points he made about being here, busting butt, knowing the playbook already).

I'm not a big fan of "running QB's", but Tate still should've been afforded the opportunity to go head-to-head, but was told to take a back seat.

I don't know if he was assured the job. I figure he was told he would be given the opportunity to compete for the starting job. I think alot of the reason he came to the Buckeyes is that him and Haskins share the same QB guru. Their guru and Haskins must of been praising Day alot about how much he helped Haskins develop.

I don't think anyone really thought last year this time Haskins would be a possible number 1 or 2 pick and basically a lock to be a top 5 or 10 pick.

What I just wanted to point out is that star ratings don't mean someone is going to get the job done or even assure them the job. Guys makes strides year to year and we have no clue how good or bad Tate is or how far the developmental path Fields is. Tate has been with this team 2 year more than Fields. I just don't think it's a given that Fields will win out, to me it's a toss up until spring ball where we will have a better picture.

Being in the transfer portal doesn't mean he will transfer. It means he is exploring his options.

He's been here two years and OSU went out and made an effort to recruit over him, then sat him courtside with the outgoing Heisman finalist and Head Coach on his first weekend in the university.

Tate is smart enough to see the writing on the wall, but they're more certainly never in a million years going to give "an advantage" to a guy who might transfer.

Fields was brought here to start, knowing that Martell had two years to stake his claim as the next in line.

So there isn't much else to say, really.

I can see that reasoning. I also could see the coaching staff picking Fields over the prospect that ended up going to Georgia instead. They might have just seen it as an upgrade for the QB room. Baldwin might not be ready. They didn't need another developmental guy. I don't think anyone really expected Haskins to go to the NFL after one season starting at this time last year.

Maybe they just wanted two ready QBs in Tate and Fields to compete for the job. There is always an uncertainty to how a QB will play when they get the starting job. You really don't know how a QB will play until they really get the starting job and play a big game on the road.

Fields father is known for being "very involved". It just doesn't pass any rational line of thinking to believe Fields landed in Columbus without some type of acknowledgment he was "the guy".

I was excited to see what Martell could do as a Buckeye, but as soon as Fields announced he was a Buckeye, the writing was on the wall. In permanent marker.

If you haven't been following Tate's twitter, it's also quite obvious he's out. He's taken Ohio State off his profile and he's announcing leaders for his recruitment (WVU, Miami, and Auburn). It's over.

And by the way, Georgia is being supportive of Fields request to transfer which is big for his case. It's 99.999999% Fields is cleared (the only concern was UGA providing a case for why he shouldn't receive the waiver, but UGA has already stated they will not block any attempt). Fields will be cleared by February.

For Ohio State, not that I love the way this went down, I just don't see how you don't jump on it. Fields is a generational talent. He's 6'2", 230 lbs and runs a laser timed 4.51 40. He also won the Elite 11 competition last year (over Trevor Lawrence) based on his passing ability....the competition doesn't even allow for the use of your legs in terms of scrambling. It would've been fun to see Martell operate a Day offense, and see how Day could tweak this years offense to fit Martell, but Fields is the guy.

I wish Tate nothing but the best, and it sounds like he will graduate in May, which allows him to pick a school and transfer penalty free. I hope he rips it up wherever he chooses. Selfishly, I'd like to see him link up with Chip Kelly at UCLA (surprising it doesn't sound like UCLA is an option yet) or at FSU with Kendal Briles (this prob doesn't happen because Francois has 1 year left). It looks like Miami is out because Jalen Hurns is likely transferring there, and again, I don't see him wanting to sit a year. Interestingly, Oklahoma's Austin Kendall showed up in the portal today, which means maybe OU would be in play...?

The college football QB position is officially musical chairs right now. All these kids have so much training and ability, they all want the throne. It's incredibly wise these kids are graduating early to open up transfer opportunities after year 3 (academically) to preserve (2) years of eligibility and the ability to play right away at another school.

On another note, Damon Arnette officially returning. Hopefully Jeff Hafley can get in there, and clean up some of the backend issues.

I like Arnettes skillset (he’s physical as hell)....hopefully Hafley can refine the technique and make him a pro.

They knew it would likely cost them Tate.

Nobody expects them to keep both QBs, to have two was never their intention.

I wonder if urban would have been more loyal to martell?
Either way its nice to finally have a QB that can run.
We're gonna be lethal in the red zone now.

I'm not sure if Urban would have passed up Fields coming but I do think Urban would have probably prepared Tate for the possiblity of the competition. Even though most of us thought Haskins was going to win the job last spring, Urban was able to get Burrow to stay competitive and basically quiet about transferring till the day he announce he was leaving. Urban was able to keep Cardale and JT around after 2014, either could have transferred. He even kept Guiton around even though he probably could have transferred and started somewhere.

I think Urban would have kept Tate in the mindset that he had the chance to win the starting job until spring practice was over and they felt confident Fields was everything he has be touted as.

Day flew to meet with Tate and his family over the holidays.

I’m honestly not sure what you’re arguing, but Meyer was a large part of the recruiting process.

I'm not arguing anything other than I think if Urban was still HC that I highly doubt Tate would be going doing all this social media non-sense and entering the transfer portal this early. Urban had dealt with situations like this before and he seems to like keep stuff in house. Day is a first time HC with alot on his plate.

I just think it would have been alot like when Burrow transfered. There were some rumors but nothing major till May when he actually committed to going to LSU.

Urban was still the head coach throughout most of this.

But the Martell family has been and will continue to be social media weirdos regardless of who is the head coach.

In the end, it will be a lot like when Burrow transferred. Martell is in the portal to put himself out there for communication.

I see Tate is going to visit WVU, how good do you think this kid could be in the Big12.
