2019 Draft, Pick #30 - Kevin Porter Jr., USC

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Haha!

Yeah, what I meant to say is that I do not think Sexton guarding two-guards is this tremendous disadvantage people are making it out to seem. He may never be a good defender, but I do not think that is easier for two-guards to exploit than ones.

I hope Sexton becomes a good defender. I just never saw the defensive upside others did. He tried really hard in college and was still a net-negative defender. He probably has the work-ethic to be passable on defense, but that really depends a lot on the scheme and how the coach is using him.

I have a hard time believing the defensive stats sometimes. It has a lot to do with who else is on the court with you. I mean stats say Cedi was one of our better defenders in 18, but that he was 2nd worst in the league last year. There is too much noise there because everything was a mess. The only guys who you could say for sure were positive were Nwaba and Nance, and I think that there was more defensive potential than that.

Yeah, I mean, a lot of the "analytics" actually control for who is on the court with you; but, sure, it can only do so to a point.

The problem is he does not look like a good defender from the eye test either. He's not lazy like Kyrie, but Sexton does not have the strength (did not*) nor the lateral quickness to really standout as a positive defender. If he gets stronger, though, I can see him becoming a decent pick-and-roll and ISO defender. But honestly, if Sexton can transform into a slightly net-negative defender while continuing to improve his offensive efficiency, then he'll be in the league as a good player for a long time (see Eric Gordon).

I think his biggest problem when guarding 2's will be lack of strength. He'll need to get bigger.

What I worry about is that it is much more difficult to cover for two weak backcourt defenders than just one. Also, the size of our guys means that it's going to be very tough for us to switch. Defensively, we're going to be very far from positionless basketball.

I last checked in about six pages ago, the board's expections seem to have taken a nose dive since then?

I really like him. I think he had all the talent in the world. Just really comes down to whether he can click this coaching staff imo. Jamal Crawford said he called him while at school and said he was struggling fitting in. Maybe he really just needs a good environment. He has a lot to work on in his game, but he is also a good shooter, underrated (because he under uses his) passing, and he has that body contortion balance thing to finish through contact. Great handle and his change of pace is special.

He could easily be the best guy on the team, but he had to buy in and that is where Beilein and the staff come in.

Hey, Jamal Crawford is a FA. Just sayin'. (Only 39 years old and a proven shooter!)

I mean we did draft Jamal Crawford. But he still hasn't played with us yet maybe its time. Has the Michigan connection with Beilein and is a mentor figure for KPJ.

I think bickerstaff will make a world of difference for sexton on the d end. Sexton puts the effort just needs coached on defensive end. I doubt he ever has

Did this trade go through yet? If not, when do we expect it to happen?

I've seen middle of this week, also seen 7/6 when the new league year officially begins. So no one knows at this point.

I don't remember this being an issue before? What gives?

I have no idea honestly. It actually confuses me. When the Bucks - Pistons announced the trade after the draft we should have just jumped in and made it a 3 team swap. Had KPJ announced with Garland and Windler.

It’s frustrating because if it takes any longer he probably will miss at least the Utah summer league games, maybe some of Vegas too

I think he is certainly going to miss Utah summer league at this rate. But this isn't a big deal. Utah Summer League is just an extension not every team gets the extra games we are getting. I would prefer him to be able to play in Utah but if he just gets to play in Vegas it will still be good.

I believe the expectation is that it gets completed this week.
