2019 Draft, Pick #30 - Kevin Porter Jr., USC

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
My guess for Porter's role for a bulk of this coming season is DNP-CD and minutes in garbage time. He's too raw and there's just so many players in front of him who, like it or not, will get regular minutes - Sexton, Garland, Knight, Clarkson, Delly, Osman, probably Windler and Nwaba as well. I think fans are going to have to be patient with this young man and hope he uses the time wisely because I think slow walking him into the pro game is in his best long term interests.

Feel terrible about the kid's situation regarding his father, but he just might be destined to evolve into a star. He has the game, the name, and the story. He just needs to be developed and stay focused on being a complete professional. He has the prototypical frame to be an elite shooting guard, he has some tools, needs to add more tools and even sharpen some. But nonetheless, his potential is there. Bielen will untap it.

Speaking of destiny, I've been thinking of making a draft site that includes extremely esoteric statistical projections and extremely esoteric astrological projections and absolutely nothing else. Would people read that? I'm, like, 20% serious about this idea.

I can agree, however -- I'm looking for him to get 25-30+ minutes after the trade deadline when the Cavs deal Clarkson and rev up the tank engine. Our youth are going to do a lot of losing, but i can deal with them being coached the right way while running sets and putting in effort.

Give me 2018 like Brooklyn Nets basketball. We'll be some proud fans talking up full of optimism.

I think we should shop Clarkson very hard this offseason, even taking back a bad contract just to get rid of him.

We don’t need him around our young guards or taking their court time.

I think we should deal him for the 1st offer, but i don't know what Koby's plan is for JC. He's just not a system player you want. Dude is meant for the big 3, or Houston Rockets.

In terms of what kind of player KPJ is right now, he'd basically be a scorer off the bench with tunnel vision. Sort of a less experienced/refined version of Clarkson. The hope is that KPJ will eventually grow into more than that, but that development would take time.

Not sure how there are any substantial minutes for KPJ as long as Clarkson is on the roster.

JC is 27, averaged 17ppg last season and is on an expiring contract... there should be a bit of a market for him and I agree he really needs to be moved now

It's ultimately a question of what you get back.

There may be some teams with cap space willing to take the contract on and send an asset because he is an expiring and they get Bird Rights. Reality for Clarkson is he could be a nice scoring sixth man for a playoff caliber team.

I'd guess Nwaba will mostly play at SF, so he and Osman will eat up most minutes there. We may see a Sexton/Garland starting backcourt with Delly/Knight off the bench.

Windler may spend most of his time in Canton. I'd bet Porter will at least spend time there to start. Clarkson really needs to get moved, though I do suspect we'll see some small sets with Nwaba at PF occasionally.

I actually think JC could be a good system player in coache's system. Spot up shooter role with more effort on D.

I don't see him embracing that role on a rebuilding team. Maybe in a JR scenario where he is playing for a ring. I do however think there will be really well assigned player roles in this system. Just get the sense of great player management with Beilien.

Again JR Smith is a terrible comp. He literally has ZERO off the ball game. JR Smith made his career as a catch and shoot lighting bolt off the bench. In terms of ups and downs that could be similar. But it won't look anything like JR Smith scoring 50. Such a lazy comp man. Like in the other thread where someone said comparing Windler to a white guy just cause hes white, comparing KPJ to a guy with "attitude issues" just cause he has "attitude issues" is lazy.

JR Smith is a perfect comp for him.

JR Smith when he committed to UNC and then changed his mind and went pro, looked and played JUST like KPJR did in his freshman year. He was a ISO nightmare who had range but looked more like a scorer coming out.

When he got to NOLA for his rookie year, he was either runner up or one of the finalists for the dunk contest his rookie year. Byron Scott took the ball out of his hands and told him to just get buckets his rookie year, and he was able to do just that with 2-3 ball dominant vets and best player on the team, Baron Davis, relegating him to spot up guy. But when he got to Denver, he showed his full iso game again.

There is nothing lazy about a KPJR to JR Smith comp.

JR Smith always had a better shot then KPJ at the same age. KPJ has better handles then JR Smith had. KPJ is a grittier defenfer then JR Smith ever was. So yes it is a lazy comparison. Troubled kids who like to get buckets is the same. But the way they get the buckets and the willingness to play defense are different. If we wanna stick with crazy people OJ Mayo would be a better comp for KPJ.
