2019 MLB Draft

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Scouting Director Scott Barnsby on yesterday's picks:

Barnsby on Naranjo: "Really impressive bat-to-ball. Left-handed, really pretty swing, natural, loose, easy. Controls the strike zone, recognizes pitches. Rarely expands, can use the whole field. Watching him over the last year or so, he's really started to develop some power, so we feel like it's in there. Left-left guy, so he plays some corner outfield, some first base. He's athletic enough to move around, but the calling card is the bat. Nicknamed 'Joey Barrels,' hopefully for a reason."

Barnsby on Cairo: "Has a really good feel for the game, instincts. He was playing shortstop, he recognizes hops, this guy moves well to both sides. He's got the arm strength to stay at shortstop. He's versatile enough where he could play short or second base, but we see him as a shortstop. Another guy with really good bat-to-ball, controls the strike zone, uses the whole field. Not a big frame, but he's strong, put together. He can run, good athlete."

Barnsby on Gaddis: "Big, athletic kid from Georgia State. This guy has got a really good arm. He threw in the Cape last summer, had him up to 95. He pitched all spring with a plus fastball. He's got an advanced feel for the changeup, throws a slider that misses bats. He had a little up and down year this year in terms of performance. As far as results, if you talk to Hunter, he'll probably tell you, 'Man, I wish I had more wins, and I wish my ERA was a little lower,' but he strikes a lot of guys out and he's just a really impressive kid."

Barnsby on Brown: "Long, athletic body. The thing about Jordan is that he's really young and he's got a really good frame. We're obviously hoping he develops physically, grows into some power because we like his swing and we think he's going to hit and we think he's really going to have some power down the road. Defensively, he's got the actions to stay at shortstop, but it's a big frame. You never know where the body ends up, but we're confident he stays on the dirt. Right now we'll give him every chance to stay at shortstop and we'll see where that one ends up."

Barnsby on Curry: "He was actually a two-way guy coming out of high school. He played quarterback in high school and then he came to Georgia Tech as a position player as well. Shut that down in the fall and just focused on pitching. Emerged as a Friday night guy this year. Throws a lot of strikes. This guy can really pitch. He can pitch with his fastball. He pitches up in the zone with his fastball, misses barrels, is deceptive. He's got a good slider. He doesn't use his changeup very often. We feel like once he starts to use that more and develops it, it'll be a pretty effective pitch for him."

Barnsby on Brennan: "He pitched some in college but it was kind of tough. He was going back and forth where he'd pitch some and start some games and then be used as a closer, but we see him more as a position player. Left-handed bat, another guy that really controls the strike zone. He's got a feel to hit. He's got 745 plate appearances in college and he hasn't struck out many times. He can run, he can play all three outfield positions. He's got arm strength, so he can play left, center or right."

Barnsby on Bartlett: "Thor, Will Bartlett, physical, right-handed bat. This guy not only has really impressive bat-to-ball, he's got big, raw power and we're pretty confident this guy is going to be able to get to his power. He can impact the ball when everything is on time. Rarely swings and misses. Big, strong physical kid. You see him up at first base. He's athletic enough to move around. But right now, probably ends up at first. The calling card with him is the bat."

Barnsby on Hart: "Big, physical kid. He threw well in the Cape last summer. He's been pretty successful for four years at Franklin Pierce. A four-year starter, senior, and we agreed to terms with him and he's ready to go."

I’m pulling especially hard for Naranjo now that I know his nickname is “Joey Barrels.” I can already see the GVArtwork shirt being printed.

Anyone in this years class that could rise quickly through the system like we have seen with Bieber, Morgan etc or is this more of a BPA just going for pure talent overall?

Tough for a layman like me to say before they actually settle into their roles at the lower levels. Curry seems like the type that could move quickly given that his focus has often been split between multiple duties (QB, position player), and now he'll just be focusing on pitching. However, he has a small frame, so ultimately he could be a reliever, which could speed up his ascent even more if they figure that out early on.

Was just coming here to post this. Here's the tweet:

He has a projected slot of 434.30K Which really tells me either they hope the other guys sign lower, or one of the other early guys they won't be signing at all. I think they will get Espino since it seems like he really is ready to get into the minors, so it feels like Naranjo and/or Valdes either will sign way under, or we aren't signing one of them.
