2019 NBA Draft

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I really hate this draft lol

I'm wondering if this is why we want to compete this year. Keep your vets while they are on the books this year anyways and keep your kids in that kind of competitive environment instead of developing all the bad habits that come from tanking, while also allowing your pick commitment to atlanta to convey so you are good to go in a much deeper draft next year.

In short, there's no point in killing yourself to keep your pick if there's only a couple guys that might be half way worth it.

The thing is that I really don't know yet...no one knows. Weak drafts on paper some times have a way of surprising you when it's all said and done. I think there are going to be nice risers that are under the radar now and the top end of the draft might look very good...who knows.

I'm all for keeping the pick while trying to stay competitive in games. We need to restock on assets and players asap. The sooner the better. But I also don't want to stunt the development of our current prospects.

Team could be too good year after next and so we might lose the pick in a stronger draft, than a higher pick in a weaker draft.

I don't know jack shit about any high school players, so I have no player preferences.

However, I'd love to see the Cavs try to build the right kind of culture by focusing on guys with strong bbiq's and work ethics, and I'd be willing to give up some level of polished skills or athleticism to get that. I think enough guys like that form a critical mass that makes everyone else around them better. Guys learn how to play the right way from each other, the ball moves, and the defense shuts people down.

I also think that's more sustainable than an overreliance on just acquiring better athletes than everyone else.

I think the value is going to end up in established college players and international players. I don't like the polish on a lot of these high school players at all. I loved the 2018 draft...I think for as good as 2018 was, 2019 will be that poor. It's going to be such a crap-shoot. If there was one year where you wanted CLE to lose their draft rights, I think next year is it....

And before I sign off on this post, the left handed comparison of RJ Barrett to Kobe Bryant is asinine to me. Barett handles the ball like a power forward and has the size of a SG/SF. Kobe was smooth AF the day he had a ball in his hand. Barrett is choppy, lacks finesse, and is hugely reliant on his frame against smaller players near the bucket. He often times looks more like a PF than a skilled guard. I'm not trying to say he's a bad player, but he's so far from a polished prospect, when people say he's the next elite SG, it kind of drives me crazy.

Is there anyone in this draft that is worth sabotaging the season and the development of the young guys already here by purposely trying to win just 18-22 games?

I’m all for ensuring that we don’t forfeit our pick to ATL, but I don’t think gutting thinks so badly that we can barely win 20 games is the right move either as I don’t see the clearcuy player worthy of that degree of tanking for.

I would much rather compete(but with the young guys all getting 25-35mpg), let the chips fall where they may, and likely deaft in the 7-9 range. Year after year shows that there are always eventual Allstats available in that range: Klay, Kawhi, Drummond, Giannis, Hayward, PG13, Mitchell, etc.

I don't think so, and I think this is the way the Cavs are approaching the season.

If we finish borderline playoffs in the East, it means 2 things:

1. Our new core and young guys had a helluva season
2. We have a lot of cap space to spend in 2019-2020. JR Smith comes off the books (frees $11.5M with buyout), George Hill comes off the books (frees $19M with buyout), and then you lose Kendrick and Korver is an easy piece to move.

Whether the Cavs have a top 10 draft pick or not, they will be in a really good position to add talent to Cedi, Sexton, and Zizic via free agency.

That said, I think we will end up with a top 10 pick, but this draft does look exceptionally weak.

This draft will be fine, there's a lot of talent in the class, and we'll see who rises to the top.

This recent draft is still fresh in everyone's mind, and we tend to be prisoners of the moment. Hell, some of the same people calling the 2018 draft amazing, and one of the deepest ever, were referring to it as top heavy a year ago.

There's still a lot of basketball to be played.

I just want a stud SG with a lights out 3 point stroke. Is that too much to ask?

No, I don't think it is. And in fact, you are subscribing to the Atlanta Hawks method of creating a roster.

Will be interesting to follow the Hawk this year after taking Trae Young, Kevin Huerter (probably the best pure shooter in draft), and Omari Spellman (who is probably the best PF/C shooter in draft).

I agree though....depending on how they handle Kevin Love, a pure shooting 2G or PF should be the biggest priorities next off-season.

I get what you're saying, but it reminds me of last years NFL draft.....just a really bad class from top to bottom.

This NBA draft is similar. It just won't stack up from top end talent, to the great depth behind it as well....IMO.

Obviously, I could be wrong. But guys like Ayton, Porter Jr., Doncic, Bagley, Young........they were all highly touted.

Honestly, I think the hype for NBA draft classes largely comes from the excitement of college coaches scouting these guys to their schools......and I think most college coaches recognize, this just isn't a great class.

I think there will end up being a lot of freshman on non elite teams next year, that the average analyst/fan, will wonder.....how TF did thi sguy not get a scholarship to an elite school? Just a lot of "weird" situations, IMO. I look at a guy like RJ Barrett, who just bullies his kids defenders around. Has he maxed out his size in HS? How much stronger can he get? Is he going to get taller? Or, is he going to max out early like Shabazz did, and become a fringe NBA player?

I just think this class has a ton of questions.....

It most certainly doesn't mean number 1 is true, not with how bad the East is likely to be.

Fortunately, I think this team will be bad even with the vets. But if try to compete, miss the playoffs, and still lose the pick? That's a disaster. I don't care what people think of the draft class.

Looking into possible/likely 6-10 range guys a little more, I think Jontay Porter, Killian Tillie, or Bol Bol could be great fits next to Zizic in the frontcourt, and any of Reddish, Langford, and Keldon Johnson could be great between Sexton and Cedi on the perimeter depending on how they look next year. Thoughts on any of those guys?

Killian Tillie? guy is a role player.

Bol Bol sucks.

I wouldn't take Tillie top-10 right now. But I think he could have a breakout season and be the Mikal Bridges of next year's draft. Not that they're very similar players, exactly, but they're both long smooth athletes who can defend multiple positions and shoot the lights out.

As for Bol Bol, how is he different from Porzingis at the same age? I think his 3-point shooting and shot blocking ability would pair well with Zizic's inside scoring and rebounding.

Killian Tillie's body is problematic as a front court player. He should be picked in the 20's or late teens.

Bol Bol and Porzingis are not a like. Bol Bol is a plodding big that will never be a able to play PF. There is a reason why you don't see players with his body type succeed in the NBA, especially when they move like that. I also don't love the form on his jumper, but that holds no weight on my evaluation of him as par as his projection.

Bol Bol will get pushed around in the NBA and will not be able to put on the weight to compensate.

I think you are forming your views on Bol Bol just through watching his highlights.
