2019 NBA Draft

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I buy the fit, but I'm not sure I see the high ceiling. Seems like more of a high floor guy? He's good at a lot of things, but I don't see top-tier potential in any part of his game.

I think his NBA ceiling is a good two-way starter. To me, that is a high ceiling for a 20's ish pick. Typically, you're trying to simply nab good role players with picks that late. So maybe that is where we think a bit differently? I'm thinking ceiling for a 20th pick....not for any pick. If you could find a player who could hit a two-way ceiling (in the 20's), that is a home run to me. But I think everyone has their own definition of what a ceiling is.

Some have comped him as a Jrue Holliday like prospect but I think Dosunmu has a far better college shooting profile....just based on his mechanics and nearly 2x the 3PT volume (from the longer college line). If Jrue Holliday is his comp / ceiling, that is pretty high isn't it? He's a 1x All-Star, 1x All-Defense.

I don't buy the Jrue comp because I don't think Dosunmu is an outlier defensive talent, and I don't think the pure point guard ability is there for him to average in the ballpark of 8 assists per game. But could he be a totally solid starting SG? Absolutely. I'd argue for Horton-Tucker as a higher-ceiling guy who could also be on the board in the early 20's.

What gives Horton-Tucker a higher ceiling in your eyes? Dosunmu is a better shooter, seems to be a more explosive scorer when he gets going (7 games with 20 or more), with similar box score production in other areas (on similar usage) and a similar frame. Tucker is thicker but Dosunmu isn't frail and has room to fill out.

Is it simply age related? I know THT is younger but there's a large shooting gap to close, which historically speaking, just does not happen given that his current markers (41/32/61) are just really, really bad shooting splits. He's a sub .500 TS/EFG guard in college. His advanced shooting has been even worse in conference play, sub .470 TS/EFG.

I like him (THT) more than the above indicates but I'm not sure what Tucker does that would separate himself from someone like Dosunmu, who is producing in a worse situation? and projects similarly as a two way player?

Nearly a full year younger, and a far more interesting prospect physically with a huge frame and a 7'1" wingspan.

Don't see a huge gap between the two efficiency-wise...Dosunmu's been a bit more efficient scoring, while THT's been a bit more efficient passing. Only notable thing there IMO is that I don't totally trust THT's jumpshot to work at all from NBA range, and if it doesn't he's probably toast (hence, higher floor to Dosunmu).

EDIT: basically identical scoring volume, for what it's worth (25.3 per 100 for Dosunmu, 25.6 for THT)

Makes sense.

7'1" is freakishly long, I just don't know how you reconcile his shooting to this point.

Stepien has him charted at .269 (28/104) from combined long mid range and NBA 3's. Yikes.

I wasn't really familiar with him coming out of HS.....so I'm not sure if that is out of character, based on his HS production or if he was a similarly below average shooter as an NCAA prospect?

For what it's worth, that doesn't include his most recent game in which he went 6/9 from deep. Just now saw that he was EYBL teammates with Dosunmu, which is kind of interesting. Dosunmu was a far more prolific (and more efficient) scorer overall, but THT actually took more 3's and made them at a better clip. How bizarre.

It's possible it's just a down shooting year for him then. He's young....and playing college minutes, after just turning 18, is a lot to handle.

Seems like he and Dosunmu are in similar boats. They should stay for developmental reasons but the next draft is just loaded with PG and combo 2's. They could both post better 2019-2020 college seasons and be drafted later than they would in 2019.

Going back to Barrett...

His ACC play looks like, dare I say, Luka Doncic in Europe last year? His play making has been terrific as of late, his shooting has been improving and he is using the post effectively.

He's really starting to lock down that #2 spot for me. He looks fantastic.

I think a poor man's Luka Doncic is a good comp for him, and I don't mean that as a knock. Certainly looking like a prototypical superstar wing prospect.

Who needs a job?

Possible you could be the graphic designer at Murray State with a little practice.

I’ve looked at his shooting percentages enough to know Barrett is player B. This is possibly the first obvious sign I need an intervention.

I was going to guess player A was Anfernee Hardaway but it does not appear to be who it is. I also did not realize how obscene his per 100 AST numbers were. Is it a recent player? Last 5 years?

Edit: Knowing CBBI, I knew this either was one of two things. A really terrible 1:1 for Barrett, or a really favorable 1:1. I searched all the terrible ones first. :chuckle: Then I went through the goods ones. It is interesting to see their splits with how well Tatum has done.

You know me well.

That said...

I genuinely didn't have an ulterior motive on this one. I just thought it was an interesting comparison between two guys who played for the same team against very similar competition only a few years apart.

I like RJ. I liked Tatum too.

As long as we can end up with one of Zion/RJ/Morant/Reddish, I will be happy.

If we slide to the 5th pick, then I'm officially nervous and upset.

Understandable, though I have this nagging feeling that Little could be really good and playing for UNC as a freshman hurts his stock. So if he comes out, he could be a very good two way player at 5 or later.
