2019 RCF NFL Mock Draft - Commentary

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I'm happy to take a team from anyone that may have two of them.. just became aware of the thread earlier today. Thanks!

To get this thing rolling, I'm going to go ahead and give you the Saints. That should free @Soda up to do more mock draft commissioner stuff. Glad you joined, and there are other people doubling up franchises if anyone else wants to join in late.

Should we send out a search party for our Commissioner @Soda ? I'm greatly concerned for his well-being. He could be face down behind a brothel.

I know we haven't started, but I figured I would put out there that the Eagles are open to trading down.

I want to give this proper attention, which I'm not getting at work this week.

After work this evening is the time. I hope you've all been scouting rigorously.

Hey @The Human Q-Tip and others following our draft - talk about that dumb trade for Marcus Mariota and other shit you hate/tolerate/like here.

Did I wander into the Titans Tank thread by mistake? I mean, I have just one question....

I gave up a 1st for a Pro Bowl QB in his prime on a win-now roster. These guys don’t come available.

Stafford’s never had a line. He’s never had a running game.

He’s a lock for 30 TD, 10 INT, and 67% completion in this offense.

That gets Tennessee back into the playoffs with their defense. It wasn’t a top 10 pick. It was #19 in a draft that lacks premier talent but is very deep in the middle rounds.

I think people forget that 1st round picks only have a 53% success rate.

Umm, what??
This is a draft that isn’t as top heavy as other drafts but has a ton of 2nd-3rd round graded guys.

NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein said on the network’s “Move the Sticks” podcast that the Browns didn’t place first-round value on the No. 17 pick they dealt as the centerpiece of the package for Beckham due to a dearth of first-round talent in the upcoming NFL draft.

Report: Browns don’t see 1st-round value in traded pick

“I had heard that the Browns considered there to be 15 players that are first-round players in this year’s draft,” Zierlein said. “That sounds about right. About 15 guys who are first-round picks. Analytics is always about quantifying value so, for them, that 17th pick, they considered that a second-round player, generally speaking.”

We spent 3 months convincing ourselves otherwise because we had #17, but I’m cool adding my franchise quarterback and keeping my #2 and #3.

Then again, it’s becoming clear that I like Matt Stafford more than anyone other than his Gram-Grams.

If you're Detroit in that scenario, do you even want Mariota back in the deal? You're clearly going to tank, so why bring in a QB that is just good enough to keep you out of the top of the draft?

It’s all about COST CONTROLLED TALENT.

Alright @natedagg @Stark and @The Human Q-Tip , one last defense.

Cost-controlled rookies are great for building a contender. However, the Titans are nearly there and have all of the other pieces in place. They needed a QB that's ready to win now and Mariota is not that guy. Additionally, I'm not impressed with this QB draft class.

This game is all about the quarterback.
Tell Drew Brees and Tom Brady that this game requires a cost-controlled rookie at QB. In reality, it just requires a good one. It's just gravy if they are on a rookie deal.

Tell me the last time a QB as good as Stafford was traded in his prime. It doesn't happen often. It just doesn't.

The last three even in the same vicinity were Sam Bradford in 2016, Carson Palmer in 2011, and Jay Cutler in 2009. All fetched 1st round picks and other assets.

I would also say that clearly Matthew Stafford is better than these 3 at the times they were traded.

Additionally, Jimmy Garoppolo was traded in 2017 for a high 2nd, and he 1) only had 4 NFL games as a starter 2) was due for a mega-contract extension, and 3) the Patriots turned down 1st round picks to send him to San Francisco.

Here's a more comprehensive list.

Sam Bradford from Philadelphia to Minnesota. Traded for a 2017 first round pick and conditional 2018 pick, to become a 4th rounder, September 3, 2016.

Bradford may set the all-time record for completion percentage in a season while simultaneously finishing with a below average yards per attempt. The Vikings will miss the playoffs in his first season and it remains to be seen how many games he will start in the future with Teddy Bridgewater’s uncertain status.

Carson Palmer from Cincinnati to Oakland. Traded for 17th overall (Dre Kirkpatrick) and 2013 2nd rounder (Giovani Bernard) on October 18, 2011.

Palmer, of course, resurrected his career in Arizona, but it came after Oakland traded away a first round pick and another pick that became running back Giovani Bernard. Palmer would start 24 games for Oakland, which is the median for all the players on this list, with the team that traded for them.

Jay Cutler (and 5th round pick) from Denver to Chicago. Traded for 18th overall pick (Robert Ayers), 3rd round pick (Mike Wallace), 2010 1st round pick (#11 Anthony Davis) and Kyle Orton, April 2, 2009.

Jay Cutler’s time in Chicago appears to be ending soon. He had carried some awful offensive units at times. He also reached one conference title game, the last time the Bears reached the postseason. I think this also speaks to how bad many of the quarterback trades have been, but in retrospect, this is a well above average trade for a veteran QB with a first round pick, considering how long he lasted.

Drew Bledsoe from New England to Buffalo. Traded for 2003 1st (#14 Michael Haynes) on April 21, 2003.

The Patriots were so confident in Bledsoe that they traded him in the division. He did start 48 games in Buffalo, which means it was a positive trade compared to the player eventually taken in that spot (though New England would trade again to get Ty Warren).

Trent Green (and 4th round pick) from St. Louis to Kansas City. Traded for 12th overall pick (Damione Lewis), April 20, 2001. Over a three year stretch from 2002 to 2004, Kansas City ranked 1st, 1st, and 2nd in points scored. Oh, and Greg Robinson was the defensive coordinator. Green started for 88 games for Kansas City.

Brad Johnson from Minnesota to Washington. Traded for 11th overall pick (Daunte Culpepper), 1999 3rd (Joey Porter), 2000 2nd (Michael Boireau), February 15, 1999.

Minnesota traded away a pick that was used on his replacement, Daunte Culpepper, who was really good for the first five years of his career, and a pick that would become Joey Porter after another trade, and this still probably ranks in the top ten of QB for first round pick trades.

Johnson did lead Washington to a playoff appearance in 1999, and would last two years in Washington before moving on to Tampa Bay, where he would win a Super Bowl in 2002.

Rob Johnson from Jacksonville to Buffalo. Traded for 9th overall (Fred Taylor and 4th rounder (Tavian Banks) on February 13, 1998.

Rob Johnson was frequently mentioned among the worst trades when I ran an impromptu poll. I have him squarely in the middle when it comes to bad trades of quarterbacks for first round picks. Yes, the Bills mistakenly started him instead of Flutie. Yes, he took too many sacks and could play the role of a statue. He was still good looking, and that is worth bonus points when trying to split hairs on this list.

Rick Mirer from Seattle to Chicago. Traded for 11th overall (Michael Booker) on February 18, 1997.

Rick Mirer had a passer rating of 65.2 over four seasons when the Bears traded the 11th overall pick for him. To put this in some perspective, imagine if Blaine Gabbert played about like he did last year for two more seasons, and then the Jaguars were able to trade him for a high first round pick. That’s how mind numbingly awful this was.

Mirer started 3 games in Chicago, matching Erickson (see next) for fewest on this list.

Yet, it’s still not the worst trade for a QB with a first overall pick.

Craig Erickson from Tampa Bay to Indianapolis. Traded for 1996 1st (Marcus Jones) on April 27, 1995.

The Bucs and Colts were involved in some serious quarterback for picks trades in the 1990’s. Erickson started only 3 games for Indy, tied for fewest among those traded for a first round pick. You might recall that someone named Jim Harbaugh would lead them to the playoffs that year.

Jeff George from Indianapolis to Atlanta. Traded for #7 overall (Bryant Young), 1994 3rd (James Bostic, and 1996 conditional that became a 1st (Marvin Harrison), on March 24, 1994.

Jeff George did just well enough in Atlanta in 1995 to trigger a 1996 pick becoming a first rounder that the Colts used on Marvin Harrison. Then he got into a fight with June Jones and started only 3 games in 1996 before being jettisoned.

I think Matthew Stafford getting traded at age 30 is something extremely rare. Giving up a 1st for him is well in line with other QB transactions.

Stafford has never had a strong running game to complement him. He's never had one of the top offensive lines in the NFL. Detroit has been terrible at building around him.

Even yet, he's had Pro Bowl seasons. He's had 5000 yard passing seasons. He's had 40 TD passing seasons.

Now, imagine that his best football--a more efficient and controlled version--is ahead of him on a new team with a defense, a running game, and offensive line.

That's why I made the move. It was time for Tennessee to go for the AFC South. They are in a division with Andrew Luck and Deshaun Watson. They needed to go get a signal caller because the answer just simply wasn't to lie down and punt on the division for the next 10 years of those guys' careers.

And for the record, I told you @MGMT that I was going to get heat for this deal.
