2019 RCF NFL Mock Draft - Commentary

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I think you're severely overrating the Titans defense. I think that's a team closer to tearing it all down and rebuilding than going for it.

Derrick Henry sucks. Dion Lewis is good, but he's not gonna make you a contender. That receiving corps sucks, but at least Stafford gives you a chance to find out what you have, and hopefully we see something out of Corey Davis.

But hey, you're active and making this interesting. You're generating discussion. That's awesome.

As soon as I read trade between Lions and Titans, I assumed it would be a Stafford for Mariota deal. So I see the line of thinking, and maybe Matt Stafford would take Tennessee to the next level.

I'm just not that high on Stafford, only because he let me down one year in fantasy. When I think average starting quarterback, I think of him now. But i don't know all the struggles he faced in Detroit. Sometimes a change of scenery makes all the difference.

I had the Titans last year, and I made a similarlly berated trade for JPP.haha. He actually got traded in real life short after that for a lesser package confirming I had overpaid. So maybe you'll have a similar fate. It did seem like an overpay to me, but look who's talking.

Either way, spicy trade.

This draft is all in good fun, and I really don’t mind people disagreeing with me.

I just enjoy defending this move like a mother bear protecting a cub.

I think guys like Corey Davis, Taywan Taylor, and Tajae Sharpe are criminally underutilized. Mariota looked to be on the cusp of being a decent NFL quarterback in his second year and then he’s been completely derailed by injury and regression.

He’s been uncomfortable in the pocket, shown a propensity to give up on his progressions quickly, and has been inaccurate down the field. An argument can be made that he’s the worst passing QB in the league outside of Lamar Jackson. Combine this with it being his last contracted year and his throwing elbow/nerve issues, and I think he’s done in Tennessee.

As you say, Stafford—a good NFL QB in his prime—gives you a chance to see what you have in these young guys. They also added Adam Humphries who fits perfectly.

I’ve discussed why I believe Stafford would thrive in Tennessee in other posts so I won’t here, but I will address the roster concerns you’ve raised.

Henry is your power back complementing what Lewis does so well. Henry spent the better part of a year pussy-footing it through the hole until an eventful call to Eddie George. Henry was worried about his next contract and asked Eddie for advice in what he sees on tape.

Essentially—and Henry admitted this—George berated him on the phone and called him soft. He told him that he was trying to run like a small back instead of using his big frame to get tough yards. He told Henry that he’s out of the NFL if he doesn’t run downhill.

The very next game, you saw an angry one-cut Henry. He ran for 238 yards. He followed that up with 170 against New York. He closed the season strong and ended as a 1000 yard back. Certainly, he’s a committee back with Lewis, but these two offer something Detroit hasn’t seen. They hadn’t even had a 100 yard rusher for the better part of a decade until Kerryon Johnson last year.

Tennessee had the 25th ranked offense in 2018, and the 29th ranked passing offense.

You think the defense is overrated, but I think that’s untrue.

Defensively, they ranked 8th in total defense (yards) and 3rd in points/game at 18.9.

That’s while being on the field so much with an offense that can’t move the ball and can’t score. Sometimes the best defensive helper is a good offense that can simply possess and move the ball—something the Titans didn’t have.

Jurrell Casey is a force in the middle of this defensive line.

Harold Landry was a stud on the end as a rookie last year.

Cameron Wake steps in as a stop gap to see what he has left.

Wesley Woodward is as solid as they come and I’m high on two young guys—Jayon Brown and Rashaan Evans at linebacker. Evans battled some injuries last year as a 1st round rookie but was promising when on the field.

Kevin Byard and the newly acquired Kenny Vaccaro make up one of the NFL’s more underrated safety tandems.

Adoree Jackson, Logan Ryan, and Malcolm Butler have been solid at corner.

I think this is a defense that people are sleeping on.

I may be a Browns fan, but I can see a quick playoff path for the Titans.

I’m glad this topic has sparked some interesting debate.

I can’t wait for the part when we discuss this Josh Rosen/Denver trade.

Ironically enough, @Out of the Rafters at the Q , I was originally thinking about going the other way with this roster as you even suggested and had poked around with @Jack Brickman on a Rosen trade. That was my first inquiry.

However, the more I looked in, the more I was convinced the window is now. One of the more underrated defenses in the league, great offensive line, strong running game. They just need a QB to get the most out of these skill guys.

I don’t mind a team going for it. If the Titans flop they are going to tear it down in a year or two anyway.

It’s not like they’re in a juggernaut division.

I have no problem with the Titans trading for Stafford. Their main weakness the past two years has been inconsistent and at times outright bad QB play.

Thought it was a bit of an overpay, though.

Matt Ryan isn't on either of those teams and isn't involved in the trade. :conf (5):

I like hearing your defense.

I think ANYONE who uses the last few games of Derrick Henry's season as a defense of Derrick Henry being a good running back is in for a really rude awakening. The guy's slow. He's not an effective back in today's NFL. Dion Lewis is better at every facet of the game, including running between the tackles. You just can't have a straight line, zero-cut runner who takes forever to get up to speed.

It's cool seeing the big man get up to speed and pull away from everyone, but that shit doesn't equate to success because it only happens in garbage games or against garbage teams.

The same people who are betting on Henry this year are the same people who were berating Gurley and Melvin Gordon when they had low YPC seasons. I think they're people who just don't understand the RB position in the NFL.

I just think the Stafford Titans are going to be like the Stafford Lions. Matt Stafford with a decent receiving corps. You'll put up over 4,000 yards passing, and maybe win 6 games.

Exactly. If it doesn’t pan out, I’m not taking the Titans in next year’s RCF Draft.

This GM is not going down with this ship.

I think it’s important to clarify that in no way do I think Henry is some All-Pro back.

In my mind, Lewis didn’t get enough carries last year.

Henry is in a contract year, so I’m not committed to him beyond next season whatsoever. He’s simply my complement to Lewis as I stated.

That said, he ranked among the top backs in the NFL in yards after contact last year. He does have a purpose in this league when paired with a guy like Lewis.

It seems unnecessary and excess to bemoan someone’s ability to grade a running back.

Additionally, I think it’s also tough to claim a Stafford Titans are a 6-10 team considering Tennessee just went 9-7 last year with putrid QB play and have added to a top 10 defense that was just #8/#3 last season. And in 2019, they will he playing a third place schedule.

We can argue the compensation that I gave up, but I think anyone suggesting that they are 6-10 with Stafford doesn’t watch enough Tennessee to realize the pieces they have. And I mean no disrespect by that—this team is just a collection of above average dudes, no stars, and is off the radar entirely—specifically defensively.

Here's a more comprehensive list.

But how many of those trades actually worked for the acquiring teams? Stafford has had one Pro Bowl since entering the league, and that included a number of years when he had Megatron. The "I think he'll do better with a change of scenery" logic seems to disappoint more often than not.

But...it all comes down to whether or not your evaluation of Stafford is correct. If it is...then it's a great deal. Of course, since this is only a mock draft, we'll never know. Too bad.

The Leno interview with Grant was just too good not to use, though.

Yeah, I don't think it's crazy at all to consider Q the best player in the draft. The only reason he dropped is because QB is the more valuable position, SF has great DLine play coming out of their ears, the Jets... Wait, why didn't the Jets pick up Qiunnen?

The Jets haven’t had a premier edge rusher since John Abraham 15 years ago.

It’s been a major issue for the team for over a decade now. When a premier edge rushing talent was still on the board it really wasn’t that difficult of a decision to take Allen with the 3-4 switch this year. The Jets need to be able to manufacture their pass rush without using so many blitzes.

The Jets blitzed on 31.4% of their defensive plays last season and still had major issues getting to the QB and sacking him. Allen is a specialist in that regard and had 17 sacks last season in the best conference in America.

After seeing that Quinnen was an afterthought.
