#25: ATH, Jabrill Peppers

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Watching him closely on Sunday when I was there, I didn't see anything glaring about Peppers that speaks as "well below-average" at all. I mean, he isn't making the highlight reel, but he's been getting to the ball. He got beat by AJ Green; his career low-light to this point. Not saying you think he's awful or anything, but I really would like to see something substantive about how he's "well below-average" outside the arm-chair eye test.
The elusive Josh McCown made him miss when he was untouched on a blitz.

Thanks for your input as someone who watched him closely. I admit I did not watch him closely Sunday as I was fixated on the defensive line because of Garrett. I will say from a defensive line perspective I LOVE Ogbah. I seriously think that pick will end up being one of our best in many years.

But anyway I honestly don't even hold the Green play against Peppers. Green makes pro bowl corners look like chumps. I won't beat Peppers up for losing a matchup on an island with Green. To me his worst game was the Colts game. I was very disappointed with his play in that game and I felt like the Colts were really picking on him

As far as my below average comment I was leveraging PFF's gradings and scale. I like using them as a baramoter when I can't rewatch games (which I just don't have the stomach for now a days). I think for non QBs their grades are a really good way to get an unbiased opinion.

My point though was just I don't think we can count any of our rookies as hits or misses yet. Part of the reason I want the FO to stay is because there just isn't enough evidence out there to say one way or the other yet and likely won't be for a few years

I actually agree with the point you're making. Just wanted to throw my comment in with it. I suppose you can't ignore the PFF, but I'll say that I didn't think Myles Garrett was as bad as the grade did, either. I'm not quite sure what they wanted him to do.

I would objectively say he did play bad against the Colts. Specifically the PI and bad angle. But then again those are just 2 plays and against a top 5 WR in the game at that. I actually hold that more against him than a corner blitz leaving him all alone on AJ Green.

However, I'd also argue that he hasn't had many opportunities to make highlight reel plays, especially with how far he has been playing off of the ball. Not many deep balls and the quick fade that Kearse scored on is impossible for a single high safety to get to. You usually don't notice DBs unless they are targeted. Not being targeted is often a good indicator of playing well, IMO.

I'm trying to figure out what the hell BBC was doing here. I actually think BBC was the safety on that side of the field and Peppers was on the opposite side.

One area that I do think he needs to do better in is punt returns. These aren't game costing plays or anything, but he seems to be getting in his own head on whether or not he wants to call a fair catch, and then is animate afterwards if he thinks he made the wrong play. Just seems to be overthinking it.

I don't understand this. It's very evident that he's hesitating with whether or not to return the ball. Don't think so much!

That really is a very good draft. I still hate the Corey Coleman pick, but other than that very solid.

But even Coleman has proven that he can play in the NFL. His issue has been health, not talent.

On punt returns Peppers needs to quit trying to outrun people to the sidelines.

He needs to take it straight up the field looking for any seams he can exploit, and he needs to try to make just one guy miss while doing so. Those are the things all successful returners have done with Josh Cribbs being a prime example.

Philly is playing their safety 20 yards off the ball right now? Will they get killed for it if CAR scores?

I would generally agree with this and that's what makes this off-season potentially so hard for the organization.
Honestly, Haslam really has to get some advice from football people and go with his gut here (jokes aside).

The FO hasn't made a catastrophic mistakes (although Wentz & Watson might be trending that way) but this is also the most important draft the franchise has had maybe ever. Unless you have no reservations about this staff and FO, I'm not letting them oversee a draft with this much capital.

I'm sure there are some strong opinions about turnover after 2 seasons but with how many picks we are going to have and it being likely we'll have #1 overall, you better be 100% sure that this is the coach and FO that will remain here long term if you are allowing them to make the decisions as to how that draft capital is put to use.

I dont have an issue with playing a safety back their, I had a problem with it being Peppers as that is not really his skillset. He was drafted to be a hard hitting, all over the field creating havoc safety.

This I agree with. From what I can see lining Peppers up 20 yards deep negates his greatest strengths. Those are, his ability to go from sideline to sideline with great speed while negotiating traffic and avoiding blockers to make tackles.

Peppers need to be the safety who lines up in the box, to either blitz, to run with tight ends or backs on crossing routes, and to help get to free runners before they break into the second level of the defense.

We need more of a ball hawking center fielder to play the deep safety role who is more adept at coverage of wide receivers.

It's like people just ignore Kindred's above average play in the role everyone is expecting Peppers to play thus far this season. Both can't play the same position.
