50% of NBA Coaches Should Be Women - Adam Silver

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Agree but it'd be willful ignorance to think that there have not been dozens or even hundreds of super talented and strategically basketball intelligent women never given the opportunity to break into the ranks of NBA coaching over the last few decades based on being women.

It's easy and idealist to say "well hey, just hire the smart qualified people" but in reality if you have decades of hiring practices and decisions made by people who either outright ignored entire pools of candidates or marked them down a few notches in comparison because they didn't fit the "traditional" profile of what an NBA assistant coach looks like, then some type of initiative should at least be considered.

Oh, I agree with you. Not just for basketball, but life in general. To me the issue is overcompensation. Diversity hires for the sake of diversity, you know. Unfortunately forcing the issue doesn't always. And you also don't want to get into a situation where the first few fail and people question whether it was the right decision. Hence my stance that it should be talent > any number of criteria not based on talent.

The decades of shit hiring practices aren't going to be changed by being forced to do a certain thing either. Lots of companies still find their token minority and then call it a day. Changing sexist attitudes takes full on reformation, not just a rule change.

I think a lot of people are getting bent out of shape over a pretty innocuous comment by Silver. He's not seriously talking about any kind of gender quota on head coaches; instead, he's simply extrapolating that in a society that is roughly half female, then by extension any given job would have roughly have female employment. Are there variances there? Sure... But he wasn't getting into all of that.

Beyond the scope of his comments, we can debate the merits of Affirmative Action and the value of diversity in the workplace in the Politics Forum; but the general board isn't the place for a conversation like that.

Sure. I'm just debating in a literal sense since this is meant to be an open forum where I can express thoughts in case he was being literal...

Also, wouldn't a thread with a topic that discusses equality be a good place to discuss equality?

Also I'm bored and want to argue for the sake of arguing... Haha. Don't mind me, it's been a long week.

No, you're not permitted to discuss the thread topic on this board.

Take it to the politics region.

Edit in case this is illegal

Sure man, but .. we have a politics forum because a lot of people have expressed a desire to keep RCF free from people's political opinions; especially in this day in age where everyone has incredibly strong political opinions for some reason. But many people come here to get away from that, hence the separation of RCF Politics from the rest of the forum.

I have edited out every one of my posts on this thread, except this one.

Please let me know the RCF definition of politics so I do not cross that line again.

I emphatically disagree with the idea that this is a political issue but the word politics has been redefined and there is nothing I can do about it.

I don't know if THIS is the thread to get away from a political discussion (by your usage of the word), or one that can spring controversy. I don't need to argue with you on this point. Nor is anyone really saying anything opinionated negatively against more women being part of the coaching staff. I think your choice of using the word political is incorrect in this sense but I get what you mean. More in that my opinion is private sector affairs don't necessarily fall under politics (governmental policy). But I assume you mean general policy, global affairs, ect.

"Politics refers to a set of activities associated with the governance of a country, or an area. It involves making decisions that apply to members of a group. It refers to achieving and exercising positions of governance—organized control over a human community "

Giving black people the right to vote is policy, and politics. Getting black people into better roles in popular media to obviate some stereotypes (among other things) isn't policy, but it's clearly in the same vein and is political. Or a movement to generally be more accepting of gay people in society. Just as an example. To say otherwise woild be like saying" the alt right isn't political because they don't have any formulated positions on policy"

To be clear I don't have any problem with this discussion, I even participated on the first page. I'm simply agreeing with @pr26 and @David. that this has rapidly become a political conversation (see definition above).

Anyway, I'm not even sure where I stand on the question itself, and I don't really have a steadfast position. FWIW, I think it's a complex and very interesting question as to how best integrate female coaches into an NBA that presently has none.

I don't believe at all that the group representation in different professions would exactly equal the representation of groups in society. Cosmetology isn't 50% male, sports interest isn't going to be 50% female. Think about the representation of women on this board.

However, I do agree that the topic is essentially political.
