50% of NBA Coaches Should Be Women - Adam Silver

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
That risible definition of politics - from a feminist author in 1996 - would make almost every thread on this site political.

The draft is a series of decisions that affect a group.

Coaches make decisions that affect a group.

LeBron decides he won't play defense and that affects a group.

If David has three dogs then deciding when to walk them is political.

But ok, you have accepted that a feminist can define politics to include whether or not making NBA coaches and referees 50% female is a good idea. In principle that would apply to players as well.

So let's have the California initiative and referendum process put that to a vote and make the Lakers, Clippers and Warriors 50% female.

Golden State has a head start on that.

"Politics refers to a set of activities associated with the governance of a country, or an area. It involves making decisions that apply to members of a group. It refers to achieving and exercising positions of governance—organized control over a human community "

Giving black people the right to vote is policy, and politics. Getting black people into better roles in popular media to obviate some stereotypes (among other things) isn't policy, but it's clearly in the same vein and is political. Or a movement to generally be more accepting of gay people in society. Just as an example. To say otherwise woild be like saying" the alt right isn't political because they don't have any formulated positions on policy"

Yeah, that's just choosing the version of the definition that benefits you. Websters below... So thinking it was specifically government related was not wrong. I get what he meant, but personally feel that falls more towards ethics than politics if we're not talking about creating a specific law or rule - because a policy would force something to happen whereas ethics would justify having a specifically all male or all female staff based on talent, ect. But as 2 For The Brew said, you can basically call any decision political if you're going by the widest definition possible, IE making a decision that applies to members of a group. So we should just throw the draft lottery discussion into the political thread. In fact, why don't we go ahead and create a thread defining what politics means to you, since the answer to that would affect the types of conversations we can have on this site. I get it, people don't want feathers ruffled in a general thread, but one like this is already political by nature in your definition so is going to start those sorts of conversations... People aren't just going to come here and be like "oh, cool" because anything further than that would be a political conversation, wouldn't it?

Also, I don't want to have to read about you talking about Jigo's dick constantly in every general thread, but I put up with it... Put that in the political forum too...

This is pretty uncomplicated

Is feminism political?

The definitions yiu posted, btw, support the fact that it's political. Not a bad self own

It'd also not "my definition". :chuckle: it's the one that immediately pops up into Google when looking for a definition, the one that takes 5 seconds to find. to anyone who has spent 5 minutes discussing politics, talking about the demographic makeup of management of an institution is obviously political.

But it's been explained, and to not understand it in simple terms takes a certain hard headedness and willful ignorance that makes it obvious continuing at all is pointless, so sure, the issue of female representation in positions of power isn't political at all. :chuckle:

I've had to edit this a few times because my initial post sounded like an attack. And I'm not here to do that. Nor do I care if you choose to go with that tactic towards me. It's an online forum, that's just the nature of things...

Yes, I get that the overall conversation is political but there are multiple definitions for the same word. The top choice on Google when you search politics is a Wikipedia entry but when you look into politics definition, you get the Websters Dictionary definition. And though Wikipedia is a great resource, I don't consider it to be the be all end all of definitions whereas Websters has a little more credibility in that it's not a compilation of user generated content (which is why most schools still don't allow people to source Wikipedia pages, though the smart kids know to cite the resources used within the Wiki pages).

Anyway, back to the point. The reason I just don't agree with the way the word politics is being thrown around in that specific post is because if you're going by the non-government related definition, the entire thread being posted in the Around the NBA board would be against that rule. Since it's, as you noted, the issue of female representation in positions of power. Which is, political.

I'm not trying to fight about what the definition is. I understand the wider scope of the word. The concern from my end is if you police the forum for any level of political conversation, then most things can be rationalize as political. So whether it's politics or not (concede, politics) this would be the right place to discuss the specific topic of reforming the gender recognition act within a corporation... What's the difference here for me saying it about the NBA or about other large organizations? It's still political, isn't it?

I don't believe at all that the group representation in different professions would exactly equal the representation of groups in society. Cosmetology isn't 50% male, sports interest isn't going to be 50% female. Think about the representation of women on this board.

However, I do agree that the topic is essentially political.

Yeah I don't agree that each profession would be 50/50 either, it's naive to assume as much. It's why I think Silver's comments were more or less off-the-cuff. I mean, we don't really have enough information of his point of view to really know what his views are one way or the other.

I had dinner with Adam Silver at Nobu after the draft. I can confirm he literally wants there to be 15 female coaches.

Specifically because they make 78 on the dollar. He's one of (((those types)))

We'll, I'm just going to say that it's racist for women not to be coaching NBA teams, and screw anyone who believes otherwise.

I'm woke as fuck.

There should be 50% Male, Female, Black, White, Asian, Hispanic, European, College, NBA, High School, AAU, Gay, Straight, Bi coaches in the NBA.

I do agree a few women should be given a shot and it does look like Hammon will be the first female head coach the league.

Is it possible there are also very few women who want to coach Men? How many NCCA Men female college coaches exist?

I haven't read this entire thread, but I want to give a special shout out to Adam Silver. He must be so close to earning lifetime platinum status in woke heaven.

Ha...I started a thread on this awhile ago on another forum. It got...interesting, to say the least.

My view -- which I believe is strongly supported by basic logic and empiricism -- is that the modern left has gone too far in pushing the absurd fantasy that equality of outcome must be forced, rather than accept the fairness of equality of opportunity.

Let's consider reality: how many women are like me and are even interested in sports? I'm one of a small percentage. I can guarantee you it's very difficult for me to find other women who are as into pro basketball as I am. Sure, perhaps the occasional Becky Hammon might be able to do such a thing; she's exceptionally smart and no-nonsense, and obviously understands the game well. But that doesn't mean we're going to find 14 more of her.

There will always be a disparity among men and women in certain fields, and it's due to biology. I'm about as systematic as any woman I know, but I still avoid risk-taking and leadership positions. I'm not well-suited for them. Very few women can ascend high in those types of fields. Notice I said very few; I'm not saying we need to bar women completely from such type of work. You've got your Margaret Thatchers and whatnot who come around now and then. But we have to realize it's tougher, and that expecting there to be complete 50/50 in all things is simply asinine. A large number of women will always prefer things like teaching school-age children, nursing, and various care-taking jobs (I myself work night shift in direct care). And this is perfectly fine. Accept an 80/20 or 90/10 disparity. It's not discrimination, it's simply the way things work.

Sadly, we can’t talk politics on the main board. Sign up for the politics section if you want to continue the discussion though!
