#52 DeShone Kizer

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Hue Jackson on radio show, about Kizer:

"I don't know that I've coached a guy with this kind of skill set," Jackson said Thursday on team's in-house radio show, Cleveland Browns Daily on WKNR 850 AM. "But he's a big powerful man, so I know he's going to get compared to another guy on another team in our division."

Me to Hue Jackson:

Shut- ..Just..... Shut it.
I agree he has a waya to go to be as good as Andy Dalton.

His ceiling is higher than Dalton's, the question is can he put it altogether in the pros?

Very interesting stuff on yesterday's CBD from Zegura and Wilhelm.

They opened the show discussing the quarterback competition, and basically summed up where things are heading into the break.

First, they think that Kessler's nominal lead is completely gone, and he hasn't shown anything to write home about. Same limiting qualities. In fact, both think once camp gets going, it's really going to end up being Osweiler vs Kizer to start. Specific comments on Kessler basically said there is a place for him in the NFL, but not as a starting quarterback in this offense.

In terms of Osweiler, he has had moments and looks to be much more confident. Hue's "talk" about him isn't just talk to trade him.

Kizer was the most interesting portion. All 3 voted, and all 3 expect Kizer to be the opening day starter. They mentioned that all the coaches are trying to temper expectations in front of the media. However, Zegura and Wilhelm mentioned that there is a lot of internal chatter in the organization that Kizer isn't only more talented than they even thought (and they thought he was very talented), but he's progressing at an unbelievably fast pace that has them excited. There's also internal chatter about how impressed they are with his desire to correct mistakes, work his ass off, and apply coaching. He's way ahead of schedule.

Lee made comments about Kizer that have been on twitter and in the media, tempering expectations about where he currently stands and that he has a lot of work to do, all while still comparing him to lofty player comparisons that he could become. He mentioned his release and arm whip being a thing of beauty, he just needs to clean up his long stride from time to time.

A ton of progress has already been made, and there seems to be a lot of anticipation that the summer with Tom House is going to be just what the doctor ordered. They may just have him cleaned up and ready to roll for camp.

Lastly, Zegura and Wilhelm mentioned that when Kizer is right, he's the type of quarterback that can win you games by himself. He's shown the skill-set already.

We're going to see what happens, just thought it was interesting. I tend to put some faith in what these two guys see and hear. Even so, I am of the mindset that I don't want to rush a guy.

Always was a Kizer guy. No idea how you could hate on that upside in the 2nd round.

Even if Kizer is ready to be the starter after training camp, the question is ,"Should he start?" And "Should he start the season opener vs Pittspuke?"

I don't have any favorites between Kessler/Kizer/Osweiler, nor do I dislike any of them (like I did Manziel and Weeden), but if Kizer is more than advertised and progressing well, is throwing him out there in the season opener vs a team who might already be fired up because of what our #1 pick said about smashing their QB? I tend to think no.

Also, not sure why so much hate towards Osweiler. Yeah, he had a bad year, but he is the team's most experienced QB. If he beats out Kessler for the starting spot... so be it.

And one of the things that is always mentioned about elite QBs, is the "it" factor. Does he have "it"? I didn't see it with Kessler, and hadn't seen it with Osweiler. Sure would be nice if Kizer has that little extra special something.

I really feel like if it wasn't Pittsburgh, Kizer would be so much more likely to play week one if the progress was there. Good post, Mike.

I am not a Kizer guy, he has a ton of upside, but will he ever stop with the boneheaded plays that he seems to do? Hopefully it was just cause he wasn't on a good team last season and not the fact he changes on game day and loses his poise and brain in between the lines.

We'll see; he's 21.

I think the more arm talent you have, especially with confidence, the more likely you'll make risky plays.

Look at Rodgers. One of the best in the league (he is, imo), right? He makes some of the most ridiculous throws where I scratch my head why he made the throw, or even thought to do it.

Your goal with Kizer is that Hue fixes the technical problems, and as a result, those boneheaded risky throws become 50/50 plus throws (plus as in positive result), and that the technical flaws eliminate the underthrow/overthrow picks.

Hence another reason why I don't want him rushed into starting. I want the technical problems fixed as much as possible. We always seem to rush QBs on to the field. 17 season isn't a playoff planned season, so if he isn't ready we should wait on playing him until meaningless times (aka a blowout one way or the other/last one or two games of the season)

Sincerely this season, I wouldn't mind seeing what Osweiler and Kessler can do behind what should be a top 5 OLine. With how well Hue has been shown to be able to progress QBs, sitting Kizer will not hurt his development and may increase it in some ways. Osweiler and Kessler have experience starting. If Kizer wins the job then he should start, but if he doesn't then let's not start him just cause like we did with Weeden and Manziel. We should start the best guy in camp this season regardless of which person of the three they are, not just be like, we can only develop a guy if he's on the field 24/7 like Cleveland fans and media thinks needs to happen.
